He had done it! He had actually talked to a person that he didnāt know without messing it up and making a fool of himself! Shintarou was too busy being proud of himself and to still the heart that was hammering in his chest from how nervous he had been over such a small gesture.
Maybe he wasnāt as completely beyond help as he had thought himself - and as both Ene and Momo had made sure to convince him time and time again. Maybe this was finally the time for an 18 year old good-for-nothing virgin NEET to shine! ⦠yeah right. Like there was ever going to be a time like that. Reaching this conclusion the raven haired teen yet again fell into a slump, both because of his hopeless situation and because he had actually allowed himself to be proud if only for a moment. Damn, he really couldnāt stand the outside world after all. Why had he thought that was going to be different just because he came to a new city?
Starting to feel his chest tightening and his body tremble ever so slightly in anxiety, Shintarou wanted nothing more than for the rain to let up so he could get back home where he belonged: behind the safe closed door of his house where he didnāt have to worry about things like talking to people and actually make a good impression. Why wasnāt Ene here to calm him down? Dammit, dammit, dammit dammit, daā
"I have chocolate or banana-flavored."
"H-huhā¦?" Even Shintarou could tell that the word had come out hoarse and his voice choking, but he couldnāt really take it back now. Since he had been busy shutting out the world around him, the neet wasnāt entirely sure why this cyclist guy was suddenly sharing his nutrition with him. The only knowledge Shintarou had about the sport was in theory as his own physical condition was probably on par that of a noodle, but even he knew that cycling on a high level took tremendous amounts of energy and calories and that these small bars were a cyclists best friend. And yet here he, who in no way resembled a person needing such a calorie addition, was being offered one such. "R⦠right⦠Iāll be having one thenā¦" he mumbled hesitantly, reaching out for the chocolate one at random. Crap, stop shaking hand.
Shinkai watched the other boy curiously. It looked as if the other was extremely uncomfortable about something... Wait, was he trembling?? Shinkai was inwardly startled. Did he do something wrong? The red-haired cyclist didn't think his appearance was very intimidating (it wasn't like he was growling and drooling everywhere or anything at this moment). Maybe (hopefully) the other's slight shivering was caused by the chill of the rain...?Ā
Whatever the case happened to be, the other boy seemed to do his best to push it aside as he reached for one of the bars. Shinkai smiled kindly at him as a small gesture of encouragement, ignoring the way the other's hand shook as he reached to take the offered snack.
"These bars have helped me get through a lot of tough times," Shinkai spoke conversationally. "Whenever I felt like I was down to my very last bit of strength, I would eat one of these and it'd bring me right back up to full power!"
Not really knowing what else to say, Shinkai opted to introduce himself.
"By the way, my name is Shinkai Hayato. It's very nice to meet you. Thank you for keeping me company here. Would you mind telling me your name?" he asked gently.
Rain. Rain as far as the sight went. Wet droplets hitting him when the wind shifted and his shelter did little help, but if he were to venture out there it didnāt take a genius to know that he would be soaked in no time. Just his luck. Forcing himself out to get supplies only to be stuck under a small overhang in the middle of a sudden downpour. This was why he never left home, nothing good ever came out of it.
Why couldnāt he just have stayed back home in Kashiwa? Where he had a nice warm bed, where he had his beloved computer and where he didnāt have to worry about a dodgy wi-fi. Where he could easily get food during the instances where he was actually feeling hungry. He had never asked for this. He just wanted to be left alone and rot away in peace. There was no worth in the world anyway.
Just as he was standing there in his own thougts, wishing nothing more than to be in his room where he belonged, suddenly the voice of a stranger spoke out to him, the person he had previously noticed seeking cover at his side but Shintarou had decided o pay as little attention to as possible in order to keep at leas a small bit o his sanity intact. Why? Why was it common cortesy to hit up a fellow sufferer of the same downpour? Couldnāt the guy see hat he just wanted to be alone? He even had a fancy bicycle and everything; that looked awfully healthy.
"A⦠A-ahā¦" Shintarou stuttered, debating on whether or not to just ignore him, but his voice had already betrayed him by showing interest. Crap. Now heād have to follow up right? What was he supposed to do even?! Ah, right, flash a smile Shintarou! Raising the corners of his mouth and doing his very best at mimicking that gesture known as a āsmileā Shintarou finally replied. "R-r-r-right, didnāt see it co-coming at allā¦" Hmm, that was fairly good! Maybe this communication thing wasnāt as hard as he had anticipated.
Ah... Judging by the hesitation and stutter, it seemed this stranger was just as shy as Shinkai, if not more. The red-headed cyclist had just been about to bite into his PowerBar when he noticed the other's expression.
Shinkai had to admit, that smile (at least he was pretty sure it was a smile) was a bit unnerving. However, he quickly rearranged his features into something more neutral, hoping that the other boy hadn't noticed his discomfort. The stranger had made the effort to smile at him, and it seemed that smiling wasn't something he did often, so Shinkai felt quite bad for reacting how he did.
"I-I'm sure the rain will let up soon though," he replied, wincing at the stutter in his voice. He cleared his throat and continued smoothly, "In the meantime, would you like one? I have chocolate or banana-flavored." He held out two PowerBars and offered a smile of his own. He was a bit worried that the other boy might not like chocolate or banana (but really, who doesn't like chocolate?). Well, if the other declined, maybe Shinkai could ask him about his favorite flavor of food to keep the conversation going? The cyclist had a feeling that this stranger had a good heart in him, even if he was a bit awkward on the outside, and he wanted to get to know him better.Ā

[Juvenile- One Ok Rock (lyrics) (song)]
For the sake of nostalgia, Shinkai had decided to go for an evening bike ride to just take in the sights of his new neighborhood. His journey had taken him all the way to Mocha Valley before he decided to take quick breather. Koi was definitely different than Hakone, but it was undeniably beautiful. Beautiful even in the rain, he mentally noted as droplets began falling from the darkening sky. Quickly finding shelter under the overhang of a nearby building, Shinkai decided to wait until the rain lightened up before returning to his home in Chai Condos.
The red-haired cyclist leaned his bike against the building and absentmindedly gnawed on a PowerBar while he reflected on his decision to leave Hakone. He had to admit, he really missed his friends from the cycling club. Shinkai was rather quiet by nature, so he hadnāt really introduced himself to many people here yet. He really wanted to make friends here, though. He wondered what the best approach to doing that would be⦠In the cycling club, they had all shared a common interest, not to mention they were stuck practicing together for hours every day. It had been inevitable that they would bond eventually. Here though⦠He wondered if anyone here liked cycling. Or maybe PowerBars? Bunnies? Someone here had to like bunnies.
Movement in Shinkaiās peripheral vision snapped him out of his musings. Well, now was just as good a time as any to try and make a new friend, right? This new start was a great opportunity to break out of his shyness a bit. He mentally geared himself up to call out to the stranger. On your mark⦠Get setā¦
"Hello!" the cyclist called out. "Some weather, huh?" Shinkai cringed internally. The weather was the best he could come up with on the spot. Well, while it wasnāt very original, it was a start. Hopefully this stranger was in the mood for a chat and would save Shinkaiās awkward conversation starter.
Send me a ā« and Iāll shuffle my ipod. For whatever song comes up first, Iāll write a starter for our muses inspired by that song.

Makoto was an early riser even before he moved to Koi, so being the first to awaken isnāt unusual as he doesnāt know of his roommates sleeping habits so he doesnāt bother to wake the other. Instead he decides to make breakfast for the two of them. Footsteps, stepping into the kitchen area brought his attention to someone who had finally woken up, or at least had graced him with his presence.
"Good morning, breakfast is almost ready if youāre hungry."
Shinkai was grateful to be pleasantly awoken by the smell of a home-cooked breakfast. After glancing drowsily at the time, his eyes widened and he quickly rolled out of bed and got dressed. The redheaded cyclist was normally used to waking up early for practice, but the move must have taken more out of him than he thought. He had arrived at his new home late the previous night and hadn't yet had the chance to introduce himself to his roommate. From the delicious smell filling the air, he decided that he liked whoever it was already.
Upon arriving in the kitchen, Shinkai was greeted by his new friend. "Good morning!" he replied. "Thank you very much for cooking breakfast! It smells absolutely delicious! I'm sorry, I haven't introduced myself yet. My name is Shinkai Hayato. It's very nice to meet you!"
