One thing I always here people speculate about in Serial Experiments Lain is the alien in Layer 9. Interestingly the 1999 HK interview and Konaka’s 20th anniversary blog give a very strait forward answer.  Lain is like a Changeling.

In folklore Changeling where human babies replaced by Fae babies. often times they where associated with what we would now consider outsiders or eccentrics or physically/mental ill. The point is Lain is beginning to understand her family isn’t truly her family and starting to suspect she isn’t human. TLDR Lain is associating herself with none humans because she doesn’t feel human herself.
