   “I saw this in a movie!”

   Jaune yelps over the music; finally, having enough of it now that he had garnered the attention he so desperately wanted. Fingers fiddling with the old knobs, and the hunk of plastic and wires is placed at his feet, hands patted together then with a clearing of his throat.

   “…I might have asked Ironwood for your address. Please don’t think it’s weird.”

   Fingers tussle through styled hairs, and his voice cracks an octave higher than intended.

So you should be well aware by now that we stan Iced Coffee on this page, but you probably didn’t know that I also really ship Cardin x Velvet, which isn’t too surprising since this is the first time I’ve drawn this pairing.

I’m always a sucker for a redemption arc. I enjoy seeing characters (and real people) developing self awareness, growing out of their old, hurtful ways, and bettering themselves. It’s inspiring, especially since I personally struggle with similar issues.

When I encounter a rarepair, I tend to think of how those characters could work together. In this case, my thoughts are that after Beacon is rebuilt and classes resume, Cardin continues to target Velvet. Towards the end of that school year, as a leadership exercise, Team CFVY leads a few other younger teams on a training mission, including CRDL. There are more Grimm than anticipated, and when Cardin is injured and his mace knocked out of reach, Velvet leaps into action to save him from an Ursa. While she may hate him for how he’s treated her, she can’t just let him be killed. This creates a huge paradigm shift for Cardin, who over the course of his 3rd year, rejects the bigotry he was taught and familiarizes himself with Faunus issues. Kindhearted Velvet sees that he is sincere and forgives him. They eventually become friends and later start dating.

I would like to clarify that I despise the old tropes of “he’s mean to you because he likes you” and women “fixing” bad men. That holds no appeal for me, and neither trope is present in my headcanon for this ship.

Velvet’s dress and hat are inspired by 1920s fashion since The Velveteen Rabbit was written around that time. Cardin sorta came out dressed as Andy Bernard and that’s okay. 🙃

The lyrics are from the song Easter Parade. I heard it as a child, and it’s been stuck in my head lately.
