Steve stopped dead when he saw him. It had been a couple weeks since he started his search for Bucky after he got out of the hospital, and there he was. Standing there out in the open. There wasn’t a lot of people around but he slowly started walking over to his old friend with caution.

" Bucky, it’s me. It’s Steve. I don’t want to fight you. I just want to talk."

"Steve…" The name feels familiar on his tongue, like lingering aftertaste of whiskey chased with the coppery tang of blood and gunpowder. He recoils, eyes guarded and posture defensive. He’s wired to expect pain, but his eyes are heavy with uncertainty. "Then talk."

Steve tried not to let the relief in his expression show when he heard his name. There was at least a chance that Bucky would hear him out. His face falls when he sees how he recoils, eyes and posture defensive and guarded. It makes the anger he has for Hydra grow even more. " Alright... I just want to help you, Buck. I know they wiped you clean but I also know they can't take all your memories. You're still you. And we were childhood friends ...... 'till the end of the line."

He probably shouldn’t have done that. Actually, scratch that. He knows he shouldn’t have done that but unlike Steve, he definitely can still get drunk. It just takes a lot more than a few shots these days. Just because you want someone so badly it hurts doesn’t mean the feelings are mutual.

Steve’s eyes widened and his body froze as Bucky kissed him. His expression was pure shock after the kiss and he willed himself to move or say something, especially since Bucky started apologizing and obviously thought it was the wrong thing to do.

" Bucky- Buck.” Steve took a breath, ” Don’t apologize, okay? And I’m not going to pretend it didn’t happen because it did. I.. I’ve wanted you to do that for a long time….. and I really hope that it means you have too..”

He stops rambling approximately five seconds after Steve speaks and he blinks up at him. “… You’re gonna have to remind me of that in the morning,” he finally manages. “When I’m sober. ‘cause I’ll remember it, I’ll just think I fuckin’… hallucinated it. And I’m not even sure now that I didn’t because I’ve wanted to do that for most of my goddamn life.”

Steve lets out a shaky laugh and runs a hand through his hair. " I'll do that then. 'Cause I wouldn't want you to think it didn't happen." When he hears the last part of what Bucky said he was shocked again. " You wanted to do that most of your life? .... we've both been idiots, Buck. All this time and neither of us realized."

Steve was used to the surprised reactions when people ran into him, if he went out in the open like this it was expected after all. But it didn’t bother him much with the whole famous thing. He was a ‘super hero’ but he was still just Steve Rogers. The kid from Brooklyn who hated bullies and used to be a scrawny little thing. He was still just a regular person in his mind.

" Yeah I am. Steve Rogers, it’s nice to meet you. You don’t have to call me Captain America. Steve is just fine."

Jan’s reaction was more because she didn’t personally ever think she would run into Steve on the streets, mostly due to her lack of times setting foot outdoors in the first place. And considering her shyness, she was surprised she was able to get her words out at the time.

"Oh— heh, alright, Steve. I, uh…I’m Jan. S’nice to meet you too.” she nodded briefly before tilting her head in concern. “Hey…uh, not that it’s any of my business or anything, but are you alright? You look kinda…I dunno, down or something.”
