Em couldnât hear everything, only bits and pieces, but xe held onto what xe could. Xe had no idea that xe was repeating his words out loud-
âSix foot- dark hair- heâll kill Micah- us all.â Em grit xer teeth as xe started to lose the connection. âPotion, lock- 0-26-0. Basement-â
Tears streamed down Emâs face. Xe couldnât hear his last words, only the intent.
âCONOR HOLD ON!âÂ
âEm. Itâs okay. I promise. Itâs nobodyâs fault but his. I love you all. Iâm gonna have to let you go, Iâve got company. I canât let you feel this too.â
Heâd had his eyes closed while trying to talk to Em, and as he finished he opened them again to stare at the hunter. Conor was doing everything he could to break off the connection for the time being, the only thing he could think that xe was doing was holding onto his magic necklace. The hunter offered him a smile. But it was cold and uncaring, didnât quite reach his eyes.
âComfy?â The hunter simply asked. He already knew the answer.

Em gripped the necklace so hard that xer knuckles went white. Xe chanted Conorâs name under xer breath and tried to find any sounds, smells- anything- that would lead xer to Conor. Xe felt something tug at the other end of the line, so xe tugged back, saying his name with more power.
Parrish kept guard over Em, ready to intervene if his cousin taxed xer abilities too much. He tried to keep himself relaxed, but he couldnât help but be tense.
âEm?â Conorâs breath caught in his throat as he said his friendâs name. The feeling in the back of his head definitely felt like Em and Conor was already concerned about xer pushing xerself too hard too fast. âEm, listen, if you can hear me listen. Heâs six foot, maybe six one. Dark hair, he said he figured out a way to kill Micah. Was going to kill all of you if I didnât go with him. Donât give him the chance, Em, please.â
There were tears again, regret and guilt and shame and a little fear. âPromise youâll take care of each other. My recipe for your potion is in the lock box under my desk. The combination is 0-26-0, Bevin will know how to mix it. I donât know where I am apart from some cold basement somewhere and if I donât make it out of here I want. No. I need you guys to know I know you did everything you could and Iâm proud of you.â
One of the worst parts of having mental health issues is that youâre seemingly required to have a breakdown in order for people to understand how hard you were trying to hold yourself together.
It started with a feeling two years ago. A feeling beyond hypervigilance and paranoia, a feeling of cautious certainty. Heâd talked about it then, kept an eye out, but nothing had happened. Not that he knew about at any rate. Bevin had found a pocket watch that she had loaned him before, a pocket watch heâd had with him the night he was taken, in their mailbox. She hadnât told him, she didnât want to worry him.
Nothing had come of it then. But, luck has a tendency to run out at the most inopportune moments.
Theyâd gone to see a movie, riding their bikes and skating to the cinema and pooling money together only for Matthew to whip out a bank card and pay for everything. Conor had slipped out near the mid point of their movie to use the toilet (heâd been sure to take an aisle seat just in case of something like this). The moment heâd crossed the threshold into the bathroom, that feeling came up and he felt a twist in his gut. He couldnât just walk back out, his bladder was too full for that, but he definitely felt like this was wrong.
So, heâd used the stall. Locking it and putting one foot (and resting his weight with it) against the door to ensure that if the lock was broken thereâd be at least some resistance against someone pushing it open.
He peed without incident.Â
It wasnât until heâd finished washing his hands and glanced in the mirror that it happened. A man Conor only saw in nightmares clapped a hand on his shoulder. He wanted to pull loose but his body was practically frozen, heart pounding in his chest and praying that Althea could hear it.Â
She couldnât, the movie holding most of her focus and the heartbeats of those around her drowning out any chance of hearing Conorâs.Â
Conor only managed to move when he saw the needle, attempting to dart to the door only for the man to grip his shirt and yank him back. Before his panicked mind could even think to scream or use his magic he was pinned to the wall and a hand was firmly clamped over his mouth. The faint sound of metal hitting the floor made him realize the man had broken the chain of one of his necklaces. Knowing his luck, it was the one he really needed to focus his magic.
âI see you remember me.â There were tears in Conorâs eyes and his heart wouldnât stop hammering, the teenager attempting to reach to pull the hand away from his mouth. âWe both know you canât do a damn thing to me, but I can hurt your friends.â Conor immediately froze with his hands on the manâs wrist. âWhat if I told you I knew how to kill them all? Most of them are easy enough, but your little phoenix friend, I had to think for a while to figure him out.â
Conor had no idea how he wasnât having a panic attack, no idea how he was remaining clear-headed enough to know the man was serious. Again, he saw the needle, there was already something in it. âThis shouldnât take too long to kick in. Should keep you from causing trouble for at least a couple hours. Youâll be asleep before we even leave the parking lot."
This was literally one of his worst nightmares. Except for better lighting. And toilets.
âAre you going to make me show you how I plan on killing them?â His grip loosened just enough for Conor to move his head ever so slightly. He shook his head, knowing itâd be better to give himself up than risk the others. Especially Jake and Matthew, who had no real supernatural power. Jake had an open sense, but he didnât know how to use it and it certainly wouldnât do much good in a fight.
He didnât fight when he was injected, or when the man took his hand off Conorâs mouth and held onto his arm to pull him out of the bathroom and towards one of the exits. The man was right, it really wasnât taking long for him to feel sluggish and heavy. But he managed to break the chain of his other necklace without being noticed. While he didnât lose consciousness at the door, he did start losing time there.
The necklace wasnât in his hand anymore, things were bright. He must have dropped it at the door.
A car door was being opened, he was pushed inside and felt something cross his chest. A seat belt? What a considerate kidnapper...
The car started, his eyes opened enough to see the interior of the car was gray and that it was a van of some sort.
âAlive, but not okay. Heâs in danger, like you.â
Em flinched when Jake touched xer so unexpectedly.Â
âIâm not a prisoner,â xe argued, fists balling.
The three all froze, eyes trained on the new person. âWe never said you were.â Conor explained, a bit more gently than he wanted to. âYouâre the one saying itâs not safe. And you saw our friend.â
âPlease, we just want to know what happened to him. And we donât want you in trouble too.â Althea moved a little closer and pulled her sweater off so she could drape it around the otherâs shoulders. âJakeâs just not good with people, but he means well.â

Em wanted to leave them, but at the same time, xe couldnât. Xe frowned at Jake and said quietly,
âMonster.â
Em turned xer attention to Conor and nodded.
âNot here. Somewhere else.â
âYou saw our friend?â It was Althea that spoke, the chill of the poor weather forgotten in a moment of hope. âYou saw Micah? Where is he? Is he okay?â
âWe should go, I mean we can talk at the house. That thing is still out here somewhere. If Micahâs not here, then heâs safe, right?â
âJakeâs got a point Althea, we should head home.â Conor was reaching for Altheaâs hand, a calming gesture that the girl reciprocated. Jake on the other hand was moving to put his hand ever so slightly against the newcomerâs back.
âAnd we canât search the whole woods with just the two of us, Conorâs gotta get home because of his glasses anyway.â He turned to the stranger. âYouâre coming with us, we need to know what you mean.â
Em didnât answer since a few others came and began talking. When Jake aimed his light at xer face, xe squinted but didnât make an effort to protect xer eyes from the sudden light.
âWe need to leave,â xe said more insistently. âItâs going to come back and kill you all.â
âWeâll go as soon as we find his glasses.â Jake protested. Althea was carefully moving closer to help Conor search while Jake was studying the stranger carefully. While he did tend to faint when blood was involved the minor nose bleed wasnât enough to do much apart from make him a little pale. âWhat was that thing?â
"Other than scary as hell?â
"Yeah.â Althea carefully knelt down to help Conor search, ultimately finding them and passing them to her friend who immediately pulled them on. The frames were damaged enough that they were sitting askew and one of the lenses was badly cracked. âYour momâs going to be so upset.â
âSheâs gonna kick my ass.â Conor agreed as he got up and finally got a proper look at his rescuer. âHave you seen another guy? Our friendâs missing, nobody knows where he is.â
âMe? Iâm⌠It doesnât matter. We need to leave. Itâs going to come back at any moment.â
Xe looked around, hoping that it would give them some time to get away.
âWhat are you doing down there?â
âIt?â Conor was about to ask more but he heard his name being called. Althea, nobody else knew he was out here apart from Jake and he definitely didnât sound like a girl. He turned a little to see flashlight beams, with a breath of relief he looked back to xer. âWhat was that, what did you just do?â
"Conor, you okay?"
"You were screaming like a bitch."
This time it was Jake, stumbling up and stopping once he realized Conorâs glasses were gone. Althea wasnât far behind, the girl starting to immediately shine her light to the ground to hopefully find the glasses while Jakeâs light aimed at the newcomer.Â
âYouâd scream too if some weird big thing rushed at you screaming like a banshee. I canât find my glasses.â
Em was walking through the woods when xe noticed a figure ahead. They looked to be rummaging around the ground for something. Xe heard something crashing through the underbrush and turned to see the monster. Without thinking, xe ran over and held xer hand out, sending it flying in another direction. To xer surprise, it ran off. Hopefully it would stay gone.Â
Heâd lost his glasses. His fucking glasses. He, Jake, and Althea had been looking through the woods looking for their friend and he had managed to fall down an embankment and lose his glasses. âShit.â Heâd swore under his breath and started frantically feeling for them. His flashlight was gone, either somewhere he couldnât see or broken based off the fact that he couldnât see any light from it.Â
A noise caught his attention and he looked up from his searching in time to see something coming towards him. He couldnât tell what, but it was big and screeching. Without even realizing that itâd been him Conor shrieked and started to scoot away from whatever it was only for it to suddenly go flying. What the hell...?
Then he saw it. The blurry figure of someone that looked to be around his own age. Though, to be honest he couldnât be sure considering he could barely see a damn thing. He was squinting, trying to make out enough details to know if he was still in trouble or not. âWho are you?â

âWhen you put yellow or orange on your dark circles, it cancels them out, making the undereye area brighter and less tired, which is what youâre looking for. But it looks fucking weird alone, hence the concealer over it. And concealer is better for small spots like just under your eyes instead of putting foundation there.â
The response Em got was a blank stare. âOkay.â No, he didnât really understand even with the explanation, but he was still going to defer to xer judgment. âWhy couldnât you just use foundation? Isnât that gonna cover it up anyway?â
âYouâd be surprised at how many shades of âfucking whiteâ there are at the makeup store.â
Conor just chuckled a little bit as he pulled out his phone and started to tap at the screen. He was trying to figure out what bus route they needed to use to get to the shopping center where the drug store was. âWell, I know Bevin commented that she had to get the lightest shade when she went to MAC.â
âWeâll get you something a little less expensive if we can. Wet ânâ Wild has great concealer. So does Maybelline. Maybelline also has color corrector.â
âWhat even is color corrector?â He gestured for xer to follow as he started to the closest stop theyâd need to go to. âConcealer I understand, but the fuck do colors need to be âcorrectedâ for?â
âYou should probably get some color corrector and concealer.â
âWhat color? Iâm white.â Conor rolled his eyes at his stupid attempt at humor. âWell, you wanna come with me to get some? Cause Iâm not going by myself. Bevin doesnât wear much so itâs not like I can ask her for help.â

âYou look like crap, Conor. You should invest in concealer.â
Conor groaned a little and stifled a yawn. âDo you have any? Or are we not close enough skin tone? I mean I guess we can go to the drug store and see what they have.âÂ
âIâve got some for now, and some setting powder, but seriously, you should probably get some color corrector and concealer.â
