Emilia couldn’t help but blush softly at his comment, smiling at him. “Thank you, that’s very nice of you.”

“Of course, love. Now, have some fun. Your wish is our command tonight.” 

“Well okay then..” Sullivan said, grabbing a drink off of the table awkwardly.

“Dude, didn’t you bring a date? Just have some fun.” 

“I must say this looks fantastic! But unless you’re my date, this would be rude.”

“I appreciate the support. Fair enough, he is a lucky guy.” 

“Do you really think that’s a good idea?” he asked raising an eyebrow.

“A dance, Nate. I’m not asking you to run away with me.” 

“Oh well thank you- it’s lovely truly.”

“You’re welcome- I hope so. I’ve never seen a group of people work this hard before.” 

“And if I don’t? Gonna hit me with a splash of water? I’m just fortunate you guys didn’t use actual snow.” 

“I could but I would have to carry you home afterwards. I tried but I got shot down by the mermaid rep.” 

“Cheer up, we pulled off an amazing ball. Just have fun and relax now, the hard work is done.”

“It won’t happen again, but I agree with you on that one. Now that is is done, I won’t have to see you again.” 

“Really? Then what do you feel? Disappointment? The need to murder me yet again?” Nate didn’t remember the last time he had been this angry. Maybe a part of him thought that Cade did deserve this but if he hadn’t been so disturbed himself, Nate would be in far better control of the words that slipped through his lips. If was one of the many things he had learnt over the years, less is always more. His anger faded and was replaced with a look of pure horror when he said he tried to take his own life. Nate maybe furious now but even in the moment before he turned to ash, he hadn’t wished death upon Cade, he could never think about that. “Cade, you didn’t.” he whispered, his gaze locking with his and for the first time since he saw him, there was something in his eyes which wasn’t rage. “I don’t know what I wanted to hear either. Maybe it’d be easier if you just killed me again. I deserve nothing less for what I have done.” 

“Desperation. Unfathomable regret. If I could go back to the moment...you have no idea.” Cade tried to keep his cool allowing each word to hit him harder than the last. Unaware of the events holding on to Nate, he thought every ounce of anger was directed solely for him and he was okay to take it all. He bowed his head in shame speaking to the ground. “I did. I tried so hard.” Slowly he looked back up at him. “You don’t deserve death. Nothing you could ever do would warrant a punishment like that. I am sorry for every part that I played in it.” 

“Fuck no, man.” he said picking a greasy slice gingerly between his thumb and forefinger. “Why the fuck is this even considered food?”

“Ha, very funny.” She said sarcastically, rolling her eyes. “If you hated being a vampire so much, what are you normally that you so deperately missed being on that one night?”

“I know, I know.” He joked. “I’m a phoenix. I get the perks of not dying without having to eat people.”
