 The tomb of the diver. Wall painting from the 5th century BC

“The tomb of the diver”, built around 480 BC, was found by the Italian archaeologist Mario Napoli in 1968, near Paestum, Salerno, Italy; in the region that the ancient Romans called Magna Graecia / “‘Greater Greece”, until it was conquered by the Roman Republic.  

Five slabs painted with the fresco technique were found. The paintings depict a symposium scene, and the mysterious scene that gives the tomb its name: a young man jumping into the sea. 

Only the skeleton of a young man and some objects near him were found; ceramic vessel and jugs, one of them helped determine the date of the grave.

According to the experts, it is the only archaic or classical Greek painting depicting people, that has survived in its entirety.
