There are things that linger in my head about the tattoo episode and the way the hold of the tattoo manifests in Nathan.

We know that the way he expresses 'the love' he feels is very out of line with the way he usually expresses his affection to someone he loves.

The love tattoo wasn't necessarily making him feel real love but it was more about the idea of love and what people think love should be. Part of it seems to be Vince's idea of love as he seems to want unquestioning adoration and to never be turned down no matter what which we see with both Nathan and Kelly.

In the scene where him and Simon are alone in the community centre and Nathan's trying to seduce Simon, he recounts his first sexual experience as a means of trying to segway into coming on to Simon. The show treats this mostly as a joke but it can be quite troubling when you break it down. The age is left unspecified but we know it was at a family camping holiday and it was at the hand of his Mum's friend who was sleeping in the same tent as him so it's very unlikely that he wasn't underage. He talks about it in positive terms likely due to both growing up in a society where sexual assault of boys by adult women is seen more as an achievement rather than trauma and also because idealisation is a way to help his push down the effects of the trauma.

What follows him talking about this seemed to be almost a re-enactment of the trauma on Simon. He doesn't ask for consent and sort of just dives right in and he keeps on trying to coerce Simon after Simon's pushed him off similar to how Nathan doesn't seem to mention his Mum's friend asking him for consent as he just says that "one night, I felt her hand sliding into my sleeping bag".

If Nathan's idea of love effects how the tattoo induced love for Simon manifests, it may be that this is what some part of his brain has learned love is meant to be. His idealisation of abusers does extend beyond the camping incident and to to IKEA paedophile incident with him saying "That sick pervert cared more about me than Dad ever did." He seems to have more of an awareness that the man who almost abused him was bad but the statement does reveal how Nathan was made more vulnerable to abuse by his Dad leaving him. The person who he has most vitriol for is his Dad for leaving him as a child and making him feel unloved. Maybe he learned to accept anything over being left, making any adult who paid attention to him seem better than his Dad in his head.

When not under the influence of some sort of mind altering power, he doesn't often like to admit that he loves people especially not as earnestly as he does with the tattoo. When people do basic things like stick up for people or remember people's names, Nathan will often mockingly ask "Do you love him?"

This seems to go along with his general tendency to seem like he's perpetually taking the piss and avoid any real sincerity so no one can target his vulnerabilities.

Whenever he has been vulnerable and earnestly opened up, they either ended up having been deceiving him (Ruth) or they died after like a day or 2 of knowing them (Jamie and Ruth). When he's let people into his life, it hasn't ended well. Kelly can sort of bypass some of his avoidant tendencies with her power unintentionally which is what sort of helps shape their dynamic. She has a unique insight into Nathan that no one else really gets behind all the performance and joking around.

I think the mind reading in the tattoo episode and Nathan's reluctance to express his love for the people around him definitely contributed to the romantic side of their relationship coming to a halt. He kept on thinking that he'd always liked Simon and was just now stopping pretending (in a way much more romantic than he did for Kelly) and that he *never* felt like this about anyone before and that would mean he hadn't thought of Kelly like that before. This was probably the thing that made Kelly realise that she couldn't do it with Nathan. She might've settled before but from her perspective, the tattoo showed that Nathan does have the capacity for love and romantic grand gestures (the type of things Kelly desperately wants instead of a man just wanting her for sex like her ex-fiance) just not for her.
