“This is a question for all of us. Because If we look around the world right now, the coming to power and consolidation of power by frank fascists and authoritarian murderers: Duterte, in Philipines, Bolsonaro, in Brazil, Trump, in the US, and it goes on, almost all of whom also are eugenists, misogynists, racists, anti-trans, anti-queer, adopting anti-immigrant politics, adopting anti-abortion politics…Brazil is, in some ways, a special case because of the long history of the genocide of Amazonian peoples, and the ongoing dispossession through monocropping of various kinds, the extraordinary crises of Brazilian cities, Brazilian lands, waters, peoples and bodies. It breaks my heart. I think we survive in these times by a kind of ferocious storytelling, a kind of ferocious resistance, politics, a kind of refusal to go away, a kind of recognition that this has happened before, many times, and it is happening again, and that we simply refuse to go away. That we are each other, that we really can, and do call on each other for strength, including strength and mourning, looking each other wounds. I, anyway, was extraordinarily naïve, I really didn’t believe it was possible for things to fall so fast, so far, so hard, but it was the naivité of the privileged, and I think many people in this planet know very well indeed that somehow making a vitality with each other is ongoing stunningly difficult, and that, unless we continue to foster the capacity to laugh and play with each other, we truly will lose. Insisting on the making of vitalities in spite of new kinds of oppression. That we are not thrown, we are not going away. And storytelling is one of our most precious capacities.”
