âTheyâre d-doing better than expected, I must admit.â Julian mumbled as he touched the leaves of one of the bizarre plants gently. Heâd planted them a few weeks ago, fully ready to have to say goodbye to them within a few days. âFigured the weather would have them drowned or starved of sunlight, b-but I suppose they did come from that gloomy cemeteryâŚâ
Without much warning, the smaller man practically draped himself onto Julian to peak over his shoulder. âWhatcha got there Jules?~â Fairfax spoke playfully, despite his voice practically dripping with that familiar twinge of the curse. He wouldnât say it outright, but he was thrilled to see a friendly face after so long.

Vanya blinked at him for a moment, face completely devoid of emotion. Her mouth was a flat line. This little piss-ant had the nerve to sidle up to her in the first place, now this? She knew it would be immature to let it get under her skinâso she breathed out slowly. And then reached out to tip his stool back sharply anyway, face still blank.
The toothy grin he had pressed into a pleased smirk the longer she remained quiet, looking entirely too satisfied with himself for having the last catty word. Of course his definition of winning an argument meant he somewhat expected a negative reaction, and was ready to dodge a fist. But the fist never came. Surprisingly instead, what did come was the weight of gravity pulling him down to the floor as the stool gave way to Vanyaâs tipping. He hit the ground with as solid as a thud as someone of his size and weight could really make despite trying to grip the table to stop the fall.Â
With a hand still clawed to the tableâs edge, he somewhat scrambled back up to his feet with a hiss. Before fully getting up however, FairFax blindly snatched the drink of the patron behind him and threw its contents in her direction. âConniving Bitch.â His eyes were practically greyed with how much his pupils seemed to bubble under the surface. In all honesty he could barely see like this, but he was to upset to really notice.
âI supposeâŚ?â There wasnât a lot of confidence in his tone but he relaxed, sort of. He did stare at the much smaller man, his face under his helmet a mix of both concern but also a weird, nervous smile. He felt his arm cramp a little from not moving and having weight on it but didnât move since it would have been incredibly rude of him.Â
His stomach flipped as he coughed, sweatly slightly as he chuckled. ââŚI-I..I donât think I ever got your name-e?â Smooth.Â
It didnât seem FairFax was planning on moving anytime soon as he crossed his ankles and kept to cleaning his weapon. This was probably the quietest the tiny Highwayman had been since this embarkment started in all honesty. That silence was broken though as he cackled a bit at Reneâs question. âItâs FairFax sweetheart. You must got high hopes of us seein each other again if weâre swappin introductions this late in our campaign.â The gun in his hand clicked as the lock was snapped back into place and he worked the screw back tight into place.
âAnd what about you mister tall, dark and quiet?? Iâve heard the Warrenâs are a great place to converse and yet I donât think Iâve heard much more than a peep from you.â He was joking really, though it could also be true that FairFax just hadnât paid much mind to the Crusader during the majority of the expedition. He did spend an awful lot of time either cracking sometimes snide jokes with the others or complaining about the pigs and their smell.

âOff you go.â
Julian stood at the top step of the sanitarium, looking back as a nurse shut the doors behind him, and let out a shaky breath. He had spent maybe four or five days in there at most, at the behest of the heir, to deal with something heâd come down with from the Weald. He made it down a few steps before his knees gave out on him.
âShit,â he gasped, scrambling to sit on the stairs and folding his arms tightly over his stomach. God, couldnât they just have a plague doctor treat him? He was less afraid of their masks and unconventional methods than he was of the way the sanitarium staff strapped him down for the smallest of things. They never let him forget for one second what he was. Being there, being bound and forced to look up at shadowy faces with unsettling lights behind them, being snapped at for flinching away from any pain or out of fearâ
He could feel hot tears welling up. Unwilling to let himself give into it completely, Julian pressed the heel of his palm into one eye as an ugly sob shook his shoulders. He was long gone from being the orderâs pet. So why did he live with half of his head still in that tower?
FairFaxâs boots clicked softly in rhythm as he strolled along the top of cobblestone fence around the graveyard. He twirled what seemed to be a partially damaged parasol in one hand and held a medium sized bag over his shoulder in the other as he made his way back to the Barracks after emerging from the back route.
Usually he wouldnât think much of the sound of sobs as he began at a slightly hurried pace back home past the Sanitarium, but as he caught a glimpse of who the sound was coming from, he slowed. The small Highwayman knew that man.. That was that Julian guy who heâd bothered in the bar those other nights, the one who shared drinks with him, right?? FairFax jogged lightly in place as he considered what to do, giving the streets a bit of an anxious glance before hopping up the steps when he figured the coast was clear.
âHey Belmonte, gets some bad news from the doc??â He plopped down next to Julian, close enough that his knee was touching the other and slipping the bag under his feet before staring up at him with a grin that probably didnât fit the atmosphere as much as heâdâve believed.the parasol remained opened and twirled lazily on his shoulder.
hallohell:
It would seem sheâd struck a nerve with her comment. The look in his eyes was unsettling, to say the leastânot to mention him baring rather sharp teeth. Vanya grimaced. Whatever this little bug of a man was hoping to gain from her, she didnât really want to find out.Â
âIâll have to work on that. My sight, I mean,â she answered mirthlessly and gestured to the pistol at his belt. âPerhaps I should take up gunslinging like you afterward.â
His grin kept as he interlocked his fingers to rest his chin on. âIâd doubt it. Stick to clicking your teeth babe, you clearly know how to work âem better than you ever could a peashooter let alone a flintlock or musket.â While he put on a chipper voice, it was more to punctuate the venom in his words.
eldritch-blood:
âYouâre so small; surely whatever m-mess you make couldnât be that hard to handle,â Julian said with a crooked smile. He showed his palms, completely unable to say no to Fairfaxâs earnest face. It wasnât often someone wanted something so trivial from him, and was willing to be friendly in return. âAlright. Iâll give. Go order s-something and tell them Iâll pay.â
FairFaxâs eyes practically lit up at Julianâs offer. âArenât you quite the gentleman.~â Much to his delight, that didnât take as long as he originally thought it would. Perhaps he was building up a good rapport with the Abomination.
Ah, heâll think on that later, for now the small Highwayman hopped down from his seat. âI take your kind offer my friend.â With an clearly over dramatic bow he sauntered off to the bar. It wasnât long before he reappeared, pressing a sizeable drink matching his own into Julianâs hand. âYou should tell me what you like next time unless youâre big into the patron favorite.~â With that FairFax hopped back up onto the stool after scooting it closer to Julianâs.
scalesonskin:
Damn. Usually adventurers were eager to answer himâespecially the religious typeâbut the roguish type was always harder to reel in. This one seemed particularly skittish. They were lingering silently at the edge of the water, with what appeared to be a weapon in hand. He supposed it wouldnât be all that bad if he failed to lure him in; they were small enough to be little more than a snack. Percy did his best to pout at them from afar anyway.
âPlease, I need help,â he called out, voice wavering. âIâve been stuck here for days and IâŚI canât swimâŚâ
The Highwayman remained silent, weapon drawn and unmoving as the supposed stranded man spoke. The scratching at the top of his skull seemed to get louder as he thought over the situation. Lies all lies, this had to have been the team getting back at him even from beyond the grave. They mustâve set this up while his back was turned seeing as he didnât sleep during camp.
FairFax couldnât help but let a sharp cackle escape from his throat. âWell youâre shit outta luck, huh?? Go ahead and give it a try, Iâll watch and if you kick it Iâll write your epitaph for ya.â Who ever hired this guy and forgot to mention that he couldnât swim was an idiot.
eldritch-blood:
Julian felt the tips of his ears burn at Fairfaxâs comment of being asked to undress. âI didnâtââ he sputtered uselessly. Oh, what was the point? Fairfax could clearly talk circles around him; arguing against his soft teasing wasnât going to do anything for his reputation. Besides, even in light of being gently poked fun at, he was still enjoying the company. He leaned back into the worn chair, brows knit together in worry.
ââŚThank you,â he mumbled. âItâs the one thing I have going for me.â
He seemed rather pleased with himself over getting Julian so flustered in all honesty. âOh donât be so mean to yourself. Surely you got something else goin for ya. Hell I can spot a few just by sittin this close and all I have to go on is looks and a name.~â
It wasnât really clear how genuine the little Highwayman was being or if this was just more flirting. Really FairFax was also one for some good self depricating humor every so often, even though he liked to make himself out to be hot shit most the time.

Once heâd backed away a little, Vanyaâs shoulders relaxed. He was probably a pickpocket; perhaps heâd realized she had nothing on her worth pilfering. She rested her chin on her knuckles and looked at him sidelong.
âYou seem to do rather well for yourself, regardless of height. Iâm just surprised youâve managed to find so many rings for such tiny fingers,â she said thoughtfully. âYouâre a highwayman. Do you rob children in their parentsâ carriages?â
The grin he had prior faded briefly before returning a bit toothier than it had been and he sat up a little straighter to be at least a little bit more eye level with her as she spoke. His gaze hardened and the faded pupils of his eyes seemed waver and expand subtly despite him not breaking eye contact. âHa. Youâre sights almost as sharp as your tongue.â

2. Their mother? How do they think of her? What do they hate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have?[[ FairFax is very much a Momma's boy despite not having a relationship with her anymore. Due to being several years younger than his brothers and both him and his mother generally being sickly after he was born, he never got too much socializing often outside of her growing up. Slowly as he got older though he started becoming well enough to help his brothers provide for their still sick mom. After some long standing grudges between the 3 ended when FairFax fatally shooting the other 2 while trying to escape from them, his mother threatened to turn him in if he ever came back. He tried sending money he stole or earned her way for a while afterwards but after finding out she'd long since moved on from the house he grew up in. With no knowledge of how to find her, he gave up trying to fix their relationship and left on his own. 4. What type of discipline was your character subjected to at home? Strict? Lenient?[[ Things were pretty lenient mainly because rules and laws had to be broken in order for his family to survive. While it was a bit of an unspoken rule to only take what they needed to avoid getting caught, it wasn't super well inforced.45. Is your character pragmatic? Think first? Responsible? All action? A visionary? Passionate? Quixotic?[[ FairFax is quite quixotic, often acting recklessly and purposefully doing things to push others into thinking lowly of him.
