Like yes, he loves Jesper dearly. And yes, his parenting methods also damaged Jesper significantly. He wanted to protect the only family member he had left, but he did so by forcing the very same person to hide a major part of his identity. His love was as comforting as it was suffocating. And it's okay for these two things to coexist without cancelling each other out. Truly one of the most masterfully written parent/child relationships out there.

holden caulfield and his relationship to jane gallagher is so interesting to explore because she's the only other person he truly really terribly unconditionally loves, right after phoebe. not to mention the jane and phoebe parallels of preserving their innocence. i feel so conflicted because reuniting holden with jane would've been so interesting to explore but at the same time leaving her as this vague, mysterious, childish character in holden's recollection was perfect too... jd salinger the writer you are...
