"even though you annoy the fuck out of me, i still love you."
for rowaelin? i adore everything you write and congrats on 800 you deserve it and so much more!
Thank you so much 𼺠I hope you're down with some pining, because I was inspired in that direction for some reason with these two! I appreciate the prompt (and the sweet words) a ton! You're the best, and I hope you enjoy!
Rowan hadn't cared that he was missing a get together at the Moonbeams' house, not truly. Date night with Lyria had been nice, something to which he'd grown accustomed over the last couple of years. They made it a point to have at least one a month and give the other their focus considering how easy it had become to pay attention to the hundred other things college dropped into their laps.
He had to admit they fought less as a result, but Rowan wasn't sure if it was because the opportunities actually dwindled. It was either that or the promise of his undivided attention during their dedicated date time placated Lyria enough to leave things alone. Half the time, Rowan worked through his grievances on his own to save them the trouble, . Life had changedâ they had changedâ since the summer after their senior year of high school. Change wasn't always bad, especially when two people loved each other. Rowan hadn't expected love to feel so bleak though.
His phone vibrated in his pocket after he dropped Lyria off at home. Rowan pressed his left foot into the floorboard of the truck to lift his hips and pull it from his jeans.
You should have come tonight, Fenrys messaged. It's been fun.
He'd been prepared for a long, contemplative drive to expend some of his excess energy before going home for the night. Considering how to respond, he lingered at the stop sign of Lyria's road. Date night was officially over, but he considered whether or not joining his friends would be met with Lyria's irritation when she found out.
You've been in high demand, too.
Rowan scrunched his brow, mulling over Fenrys' words on his too bright screen. He was hardly the popular type, and he couldn't imagine what could have numerous people inquiring about his absence.
Yeah? he asked.
Regardless of Fen's response, he found himself turning in the direction of the twins' house. It was entirely possible that Fenrys was drunk and talking shit, but at least if that was true, it would be enough to chase the haunted feeling in Rowan's chest. The drive was brief, mere minutes. When he placed his truck in park, his phone lit up once again.
Yes. The princess finds your absence unacceptable.
A chuckle forced its way from his chest. Aelin was nothing if not spirited in any of her causes, so much so that Rowan felt almost bad for Fenrys. That was quickly chased away by the reminder that Fenrys was the only one to rival Aelin's propensity for being insufferable.
They were two peas in a pod, friends since middle school. Over ten years of friendship and close proximity had made the golden duo a force to be reckoned with, and Rowan counted his blessings that he'd only met them as a freshman in college. What would have become of him otherwise?
He didn't bother with a reply, walking straight into the Moonbeams' house without knocking and finding the small group that remained in the living room. Connall sat in an armchair and Lorcan was laid out across the floor, his elbow bent behind his head. That left Fenrys and Aelin, who were seated on the couch together. Fenrys had an arm thrown casually over the back with a tired-looking Aelin resting her head on his shoulder. Her eyes flashed a beautiful, bright blue at noticing Rowan's presence.
"Hey, Buzzard," she greeted, her casual tone betraying the spark in her eyes.
Something about it grated his nerves and had him shivering with anticipation all at once. What he anticipated, he didn't know, but he'd stopped questioning it long ago. He traveled the length of the room to sit on the remaining space of the couch, scarce enough that Aelin's curled legs nearly brushed his thigh.
"Hey," he rasped, more to the room in general. The guys launched into a gentle prod of his night with Lyria but relented quickly when they realized Rowan was as tight-lipped as usual. Aelin's foot pressed against his knee to recruit his attention, and Rowan felt the contact to his toes long after she pulled away. When he looked over at her, she was looking lazily down her nose at him.
"I can't believe you were going to blow us off tonight."
Rowan huffed a laugh. "Thank Fen. He's the one who convinced me to come."
He rested his head atop his fist, angling his body to keep his gaze on hers. It was part of their usual game, he realized. Gentle barbs and constant attempts for the upper hand. Their friends had grown tired long ago of their constant bickering, yet no one bristled more than Lyria.
"Who says I'm grateful?" Aelin challenged, although the subtlest twitch of her mouth gave her away. "I was just making an observation."
A noncommittal sound left his throat, and he bit the inside of his lip to keep his own amusement at bay. Without permission, his eyes fell to her legs, clad in dark denim and curled so close to him that he had to resist slotting the fingers of his free hand behind the crook of her knee. He shook off the thought, silently chastising himself for how natural it felt to consider it. Fenrys' voice was a welcome distraction.
"Someone had to shut you up," he teased, pinching her shoulder. "I was tired of hearing you complain."
Aelin jabbed Fenrys in the ribs, and the two of them fell into a good-natured fight of their own. Rowan welcomed the opportunity to process his words, allowing the bittersweet tinge that came with the thought that Aelin was asking about him. Additionally, he had to consider what that would have looked like to Chaol and if it had anything to do with her boyfriend's obvious absence. It was ironic to think about how anything Rowan-related irritated Chaol Westfall, yet Aelin regularly snuggled with Fenrys without a single word or thought from him. Maybe Chaol knew that insinuating Aelin should choose between him and her best friend was never going to play out well.
Rowan shook off the thought. None of it was his business anyway, and he had his own considerations where Aelin was concerned. Fenrys had introduced the two of them during their first semester at school, and their dynamic had snapped into place almost immediately. Since then, their constant power struggles had persisted and caused enough contention in Rowan's relationship to make his head spin. Anytime Aelin was within a few feet of the two of them, Lyria noticeably tensed. As much as he hated to admit it, being around Aelin felt easiest without Lyria around. The guilt about it was going to eat him alive eventually.
The night persisted in a similar fashion for a while longer before the lot of them were heavy-lidded, and the stretches of silence grew. In a graceful move, Aelin stood from the couch in a long stretch, and Rowan made sure his eyes stayed glued to the stitch work of his jeans.
"I think it's time I turned in," she announced. "I can barely keep my eyes open."
Fen's eyes snapped open. "Stay here, Ae," he begged. "I'll make up the couch for you, or you can have Connall's bed."
His twin lobbed a pillow for Fenrys' head, and Fen took it straight to the face without so much as a flinch.
"I appreciate it, but I want to sleep in my own bed."
"I drank too much to drive you."
"I'll walk. I could use the fresh air, and I'm barely two blocks away."
Fenrys sat straighter, prepared to lay down the law as it pertained to her safety. Before Rowan had to listen to the spiel for the hundredth time, he interrupted.
"Come on," he ordered, standing into a stretch of his own. "I'll take you. I didn't drink tonight."
Aelin blinked up at him. She seemed closer somehow now that they were standing, but that wasn't the case. Rowan guessed it had a lot to do with the fact that they'd both been leaning as far away from each other as possible.
"Thank you."
They said their goodbyes to the others and strode for the door. Rowan should have known better than to take her word. The second the door latched behind them, she turned to him with something like regret in her expression.
"I appreciate the offer, but I promise I'm fine. I really should walk home; it'll give me some time to wind down before bed."
Not fucking happening. "I don't think so," he argued, dismissive. "Fen would never let me live it down if something happened to you."
I would never let myself live it down, he thought. His chest tightened at the mere possibility, but Aelin's eye roll was enough to keep him from thinking on it too much. Her attitude at least served the purpose of distracting him when he needed it.
"I'm fine, Buzzard."
Rowan stared at her, unwavering. In a test of wills, Rowan's track record was nearly perfect. The only person to rival him was the woman in front of him, but he wouldn't be swayed on that particular argument. Aelin ran a hand through her long, golden hair and draped it over a shoulder. He shoved his hands in his pockets to avoid running a lock of it between his fingers.
She let out a long, exasperated groan. "Gods, I hate you." Without additional explanation, she turned to make her way down the driveway. Rowan blinked at her retreating form before he realized she wasn't making her way to his truck; rather, she was moving toward the sidewalk.
"Hey," he called, catching up to her in a half-dozen long strides, "what is wrong with you?"
Aelin kept walking, her eyes fixed on the path ahead. "I'm walking; just like I said before."
His steps stuttered, but he caught up easily. "Fine. Me too."
It was her turn to stop and turn toward him, an incredulous look on her beautiful face. "That's not what I meant."
"Aelin, if you're not going to let me drive you, I'm walking with you. Drop it."
They stared at each other for a moment longer before Aelin relented and continued to walk. The crunch of leaves beneath their shoes made Rowan nostalgic for a chapter of life they'd never actually had, but he felt it just the same. He chalked it up to their constant power struggles and a certain familiarity they bred. Assuming it to be the result of anything else wasn't a viable option.
"So," Aelin began, looking at him through her side eye before fixing them forward again. "How was date night?"
"It was good."
Aelin huffed a laugh. "That's quite an endorsement."
A wry grin stretched across his lips despite his best efforts. Aelin was the last person he wanted to talk to about his date night ritual with Lyria. Something about their dynamic made him feel as though she wouldn't want to hear it anyway, not really.
"It was fine. We went to dinner, took a walk in a park nearby."
"Sounds romantic," she teased, knowing Rowan wasn't known for his outright displays of romance.
Despite knowing it himself, he bristled anyway. His annoyance was good-natured though, and he bumped his shoulder against hers in retaliation.
"What about you? You said last weekend that you had a similar night planned. What happened?"
Aelin tensed, and he regretted the question instantly. Not only did it seem like a sensitive topic, but Rowan was almost never the person she would choose to talk about her relationship. It was for the best, but that didn't mean curiosity didn't torture him from time to time.
"Nothing happened, really. The plan was always to have dinner, then head over to Fen and Con's for the night. He couldn't make dinner because he got held over at work."
Rowan made some noncommittal sound in response. Her answer begged more questions than anything else, but the inspiration to ask them wasn't strong enough to risk the potential awkwardness.
"What? You look like you have opinions."
Well, so much for that, he thought.
"I don't."
"You do, Buzzard."
Her shoulder bumped into his, but the effect was marginal in comparison to before. He had to give her credit for the effort in the form of a lopsided smile, allowing his clear amusement to show through his expression. The light from the street lamps danced over her eyes, turning the ring of gold there into two dancing rings of flame. The sight sent a pang of something familiar, yet long since forgotten, through his chest. He fixed his eyes ahead of them.
"That doesn't explain why you were hanging out solo at the Moonbeams'. Where's Westfall now?"
Aelin considered, biting her lip while she organized her thoughts. "He had a rough day, and hanging out with all of us isn't always his scene, you know? We're all really close, and I think it's just a lot sometimes." Rowan nodded, understanding perfectly well what she was saying. Lyria leaned the same way, but Aelin seemed a bit more inclined to be agreeable on that front. She was talking again before he could truly think much on it. "What? Just spit it out, would you?"
"There's nothing to spit out," he insisted, still fighting that same damned smile.
"Sure there is. I can see it all over your face. Don't be difficult."
Rowan took a deep breath, forced it from his lungs. "I just think that if it means a lot to you to have him there, he could make an effort."
Aelin hadn't been prepared for his candor if the hitch in her step was any indication. She thought on it a minute before responding, and it might as well have been hours.
"I guess so."
"I know so."
She rolled her eyes. "Have I mentioned that I hate you sometimes? Especially when you get self-righteous."
A chuckle erupted from Rowan's chest, but the amusement bore an undercurrent of irritation, too. It wasn't that she called him self-righteous; that was hardly news to him. The idea that she hated him; however, plucked at his nerves for reasons unknown.
"Well, you want to know what else I think?"
Her indignant expression said no, but she replied, "This should be good."
It was now or never, and no matter how his chest tightened at how she could respond, Rowan felt compelled to call her on what he thought was an outright lie.
"I don't think you hate me at all."
"No?"
"No. That's the second time you've said it since I got to the house, and if you meant it, it would go without saying."
Aelin considered his words for a moment with a far-off expression on her face. Her voice was low, dripping with sarcasm, but the way she pulled her sleeves over her hands indicated her nerves enough to ease Rowan's raging thoughts, albeit barely.
"You know, you caught me." She flashed a look his way but didn't dare linger for a fraction of a second. "Even when you're annoying the fuck out of me, I still love you."
Rowan barked a laugh at her sardonic delivery, and the music of her own laughter filled his ears a moment later. Regardless, he couldn't shake the gooseflesh that erupted over his skin at hearing the words tumble from her mouth. He buried the sensation as deep as possible. How had he found himself in such deep shit in such little time?
"Your secret is safe with me."
They walked the rest of Aelin's street in relative silence. The leaves crunched beneath their shoes, and the wind rustled the bushes along the walkway. Rowan didn't mind since the various noises gave a direction to his heightened attention. They slowed to a stop in front of the small house that Aelin shared with Elide and Lysandra, and he cringed at how he already grieved the loss of her company. It was beyond his control, and he hated it.
"Well, this is me," she said, lingering next to him and kicking a few acorns across the pavement.
"Glad you made it safe. You could have been rid of me sooner if you'd just let me drive."
A smile tugged at the corner of her lips, but she smothered it quickly. "Letting you win isn't as fun."
Rowan rolled his eyes and threw his arm across her shoulders in a casual hug goodbye. His hand gripped her opposite arm and tugged her into his side, shaking her a bit back and forth. Aelin laughed at his good-natured manhandling, her body curling into his with each jerking movement.
With a final flex of his grip, Rowan made to let go, knowing that he played with fire. The loss of her warmth would be a battle in its own right, the very reason he so rarely allowed himself to make contact in the first place. Aelin pivoted into him slightly, and his breath hitched when he felt her slender arm slip beneath his jacket to wrap around his waist.
Somehow, he managed to resume normal breathing before Aelin's cheek pressed against his sternum. They had never hugged that way, never pressed their bodies together without room for something as formless as light to shine through. Rowan left his arm around her shoulders, and though he knew it was a terrible idea, he eased his other hand from his pocket to press it against Aelin's spine.
The cloak of darkness the night provided was a false security. It gave the illusion that reality ceased to exist, that they were the kind of friends who engaged in casual affections. Rowan fixed his gaze on a buzzing streetlamp a few dozen feet away, and despite the logic burning through his brain to walk away, he pressed his hand harder against the delicate knots of her spine.
Aelinâs cheek might as well have burned a brand into his chest. Leaves rustled along the sidewalk, carried by the barest breeze, and the sound was enough to shake Rowan from his poor judgment. Before he could release her, Aelin lifted her chin to peer up at him. Her cheek remained pressed against the cotton of his shirt while she blinked those beautiful, round eyes, and an intense tightness skittered along the interior of his ribcage.
She was too close, her hold too intentional. While he knew he would rake himself over the coals for allowing such contact the second she released him, no amount of knowing would compel his limbs to move.
"Ro?" she breathed, her voice a quiet rasp meant only for Rowan.
A rogue strand of hair blew around her temple, and his hand moved to tuck it behind the delicate curve of her ear. It was Aelin's turn to stop breathing, but when she managed it once more, she used it to level him with a single breathy question.
"Whyâ what are we doing?"
Rowan heard it for the loaded inquiry it was. He saw the brutal chaos of his mind, his heart, reflected in Aelin's expression. She knew why they hugged and why they succumbed to the temptation of holding the other a little while longer. But the question was a fair oneâ what the hell were the doing? Turning a blind eye to the current that had zapped them both upon their initial meeting? Ignoring it, insisting there was only contempt behind their bickering? Staying in relationships that didn't truly make sense to prove there was nothing there, that they weren't driven by some misguided loyalty to Chaol and Lyria?
He resisted his urge to drop his hand from her hair to the side of her neck or the blush atop her cheekbones. Instead, he cupped her bicep and offered a firm flex of his grip. His throat bobbed against the gravel of his nerves, but his voice managed a calmness he didn't realize it could
"I don't know," he admitted, offering a wry smile. "Let's start with you being safely locked inside, yeah?"
Rowan watched her throat bob and resisted the urge to press his lips to it. Too soon, and leaving a coldness he knew it would, Aelin leaned away from his body and cross her arms tightly against her. She nodded her head, but her gaze stayed fixed at his chest.
"Yeah." The concession felt like it cost her more than she would let on.
She murmured her thanks and goodbyes before tugging her lip between her teeth and starting toward the door. Rowan stood resolutely in place until her form disappeared and the latch sounded. An emptiness crept in at the faint click, so he shoved his hands in his pockets and turned to walk back to his truck.

That wasnât funny but she laughed so hard she almost cried.
Aelin didnât think she was breathing. Didnât think she could breathe even if she tried. Because as she practically doubled over with laughter, she knew it wasnât many times Rowan Whitethorn caught her so comically off guard.Â

That wasnât funny but she laughed so hard she almost cried.
Aelin didnât think she was breathing. Didnât think she could breathe even if she tried. Because as she practically doubled over with laughter, she knew it wasnât many times Rowan Whitethorn caught her so comically off guard.Â
No- as his eyes twinkled with barely concealed mirth Aelin swore her heart flopped out of her chest and into the coffee cup in front of her. It wasnât even funny, she realized- what he had said. It was that stupid dry humor of his, that at one point or another had infuriated her so much that she almost strangled him. Now it only filled a perfect missing piece of her heart.Â
Theyâre counting months theyâve been together almost forty-nine.
âI canât believe youâre making fun of me on our forty-ninth, Buzzard,â Aelin grumbled, sticking out her tongue in a way that had her not- so fiance laughing.
Their friends had always thought it was stupid- the way they counted their anniversaries based on months, rather than years. But it had always been like that- ever since they had started dating. It seemed like everything with Rowan Whitethorn was a lucky charm- Aelin saw no reason to change what was clearly working. So now she didnât want to do the math two figure out how many years she and Rowan had been together, because it had been forty-nine months.Â
Heâs making fun of how she acts around the holidays.Â
âYou know I love you Fireheart, but you have to admit that the way you get around the holidays is a little excessive, donât you think?â He reached over the table and grabbed her hand into his own, lacing their fingers with a small smile. His green eyes shined. Aelin scoffed, remembering the ugly matching sweaters she had forced him into last Christmas.
âI am nothing if not excessive.â
The boyish smile that took over his face had her leaning over and placing a sweet kiss on his lips. They were warm to the touch, just like they always were, and he tasted like black coffee and Rowan. When she pulled back she was smiling too.Â
âWow, thatâs a beautiful ring! Congratulations you two!âÂ
She wears a ring but they tell people that theyâre not engaged.Â
The couple turned to see an older woman who had been passing by their table. She was now admiring the shining emerald that sat prettily on Aelinâs left hand. She felt her cheeks pink as she shook her head.Â
âOh, uh, we arenât engaged,â she smiled politely. âJust a present.âÂ
She felt Rowan cough from across from her but she didnât turn around- not when she knew the exact grin that would be split across his stupidly handsome face.Â
That grin.
They met in class for metaphysical philosophy.
Rowan had long since decided that philosophy was not the way he wanted to go for his career path. And he would absolutely be switching out of this pathway at the end of the semester.Â
But not yet. Not as the blonde girl three seats down from him was still talking. Not as long as she was in this class.
Because holy hellas if Rowan Whitethorn believed in love at first sight this was it. And if he hadnât been sitting down Rowan knew that he would have tripped straight on his face after looking at her once she cut him off from his god-awful answer to the question about the reading he definitely hadnât done- and gone careening down the rows of students.Â
Because she was the most stunning person he had ever seen.Â
Were people like her even supposed to exist? And she was intelligent too? And witty apparently- if the knowing wink she had sent him after saving his ass was any indication. He wanted to touch her hair- well, he wanted to touch every part of her really, but he didnât think he would last long if his thoughts went down that path.
So Rowan turned away and stared at his shoes for the rest of class.
And when it was time to leave, Rowan decided that maybe he did believe in fate after all.Â
âWere you put in here by accident?â
His feet almost stopped working and it was pure self-restraint that kept Rowan from turning around too quickly at the sound of the familiar voice. The blonde girl from earlier stood behind him, her arms crossed in front of her with a small smile on her face. Her eyes- gods her eyes, Rowan thought he could sink into them.
âI- uh, what?âÂ
âWell you clearly didnât do the assigned reading,â the girl shrugged, blonde hair bouncing around her shoulders as her smile grew. âKinda makes one think you donât wanna be here. That or youâre super confident in your abilities.âÂ
âI wasnât.â She arched a well-sculpted brow and Rowan wanted to kick himself. Why did his tongue feel like it was tied in knots? âTransferred- I mean. I wasnât put here by accident. Iâm in the philosophy pathway.âÂ
âBy choice? You seem so enthusiastic about it,â the girl mused, and Rowan laughed. So she was funny.Â
âNot anymore,â he shook his head. âI donât think itâs really my thing. Not super intriguing to me- nothing worth learning about.â She was nodding along- Rowan was just trying not to stare. âUm... I never got your name.â
âIâm Aelin,â she responded, hoisting her backpack over her shoulder. âAnd you areâŚ?â
âRowan,â he stuttered out. âRowan Whitethorn.â
Aelin grinned and Rowan almost fell to his knees. âWell Rowan Whitethorn, you should consider sticking around. Maybe youâll find something worth learning about.â
With those final words, she was out the door.
Yes- Rowan thought as he watched her hips sway down the hall- maybe he would.
He tells his friends âI like her cause sheâs so much smarter than me.âÂ
âRemind me again why you like this chick, again? I thought we agreed that all psyche majors are walking red flags.âÂ
Rowan rolled his eyes at his best friend as he picked up another one of Fenrysâs dirty shirts from off of the ground. He threw it to him as he rolled his eyes.Â
âFirst of all, itâs been a month now, I thought you said you would stop referring to her like that.â Fenrys groaned but nodded- it really wasnât his fault. He referred to everyone that way anyway. But Rowan really liked Aelin, and he wanted his friends to like her too.Â
At the thought of his girlfriend, he felt a smile bloom on his face. Months after their first meeting and he had finally gotten the guts to ask her out. Thank the gods she had said yes- because Rowan was sure he had met his soulmate. His witty, sarcastic, stunning soulmate.Â
âI like her cause sheâs so much smarter than me.â Fenrys scoffed.
âYouâre so whipped.â
He definitely was.Â
Theyâre having talks about their futures until 4:00 a.m.Â
Aelin heard him scoff from across the line. âNever gonna happen.âÂ
She lifted her feet up until they were practically perpendicular to the bed and she could feel the blood begin to rush to her head. She let out a laugh and put him on speaker so she could put the phone down beside her.
âYou can fight it all you want, Buzzard, but weâre getting a dog. Maybe two. You may be able to negotiate one though once we have a kid.âÂ
She felt more than heard Rowan inhale sharply through the phone and for a moment Aelin questioned if she had gone too far. She and Rowan had been together for thirty months now, and they had discussed moving in together- even marriage. But the other words hadnât slipped from her mouth yet. Until now.
âI think we both know thereâs no negotiating.â
The words were a balm to her soul and she grinned, even if Rowan was too far away to see.
âDamn right. So what do you think of Alice for a name?â
âI was thinking something more like Evalin, actually. Maybe Ellie. But for a boy-â
âNope.â
âExcuse me?â Rowan laughed at her interruption.Â
âWe arenât having a boy first,â Aelin responded resolutely.Â
âAnd you know this becauseâŚ?â
âBecause a mother knows, Rowan.â She rolled her eyes, even as she bit her lip to hold back her laugh.
âAelin, you arenât pregnant.âÂ
âI just know, alright?â she snapped. Rowanâs responding laugh rang through the line.
âAlright, Fireheart.âÂ
It was quiet for a while after that. Aelin twirled a piece of blonde hair around her finger as Rowan read quietly to her over the phone. It was one of her favorites- Rowan knew it too. And it only made her love him more.
She looked at the clock. 4:00 am.
âRowan?â
âYes, Aelin?â
âI miss you.âÂ
âI miss you too, Fireheart,â his voice was heavy. Like it always was when he had to travel for games. It always sounded heavy when he wasnât around her.
She really did love this man. She loved him more than she had ever loved anything before. More than she ever wanted to love anything in her entire existence. He was the other half of her soul. She had found it.Â
âRowan?â
âYes, love?â She would never stop being grateful for it- that she had let herself feel that love and emotion to let herself be so attached to the person she was so often holding.
âAre we really not getting a dog?â His sigh was loud.
She was so grateful she had allowed herself to fall without caution for Rowan Whitethorn.Â
âAelin, we can adopt as many dogs as you want.âÂ

Parks&Rec: Part 1-Elevator and Grudges
The woman has golden blonde waves falling well past her shoulders as she stands before a mural of the Last War of Terrasenâa rather gruesome image of swords, blood, and snow. Â
âOh, yes this is our lovely mural of the city,â the woman explains. She is nearly bouncing with energy and a smudge of chocolate can be seen on her chin. âIt was painted by Petrah Blueblood. She is slightly psychotic. Was committed last year. But graphically talented as you can see.â The woman glances over her shoulder at the picture. âYeah, no one ever really comments on it. Nor has anyone tried taking it down after a kindergarten class came through. The kids were traumatized. City Hall was almost sued.â
With a shake of her head, the woman stares into the camera and smiles a bit too brightly.
âWhat was the question? Oh right. Do I hate him?â She laughs loudly and fully, tossing her head back so her hair goes flying. It carries on for a full minute before she straightens and clears her throat. âYes. Yes I do.â

âShit, fuck shit, godsdamn it, Mala fucking fry me, fuck!â
Aelin was more than sure that the many college students she had just rushed by were extremely offended by her crass words as she rushed to her first class of the day- and coincidentally, of college itself. But she didnât have time to worry about their hurt feelings- not as she pulled her hair up into a ponytail as she held a pencil between her teeth and her bag slung over her shoulder as she ran in brisk strides toward the chemistry building.
One thing should be made extremely clear: Aelin Galathynius does not like science class. She doesnât like the biology of it or the chemicals, or the hideous lab goggles they were always forced to wear during experiments in high school. She didnât like physics, because gods did she have a hard time understanding it, and basic chemistry when she was sixteen, had given her enough tears to last a lifetime. Her tutor was the only reason she had ended up passing.
So even basic chemistry in college was the last class she wanted to be a part of- especially first thing in the morning of her first semester.Â
But here she was, pushing her way through her new college campus on the first day of class, undoubtedly running late. She glared at the invisible foe in front of her- she most certainly had something to blame for that.Â
Aelin made it to the science building quickly, and it was easy enough to find her classroom- she just followed everyone around her. The crowd led her into the biggest lecture hall she had ever had and Aelin was suddenly struck with the realization that she was so far out of her league here.
âAelin!â
Her head whipped around at the sound of her best friendâs voice and Aelin sighed in relief as she spotted Lysandra standing up towards the back of the lecture hall, a saved seat beside her. Her green eyes sparkled as Aelin practically trampled a couple of other students to get to the seat.Â
âTook you long enough, bitch.â
Aelin flipped her off, rolling her eyes at her friend who had actually come fully prepared and on time to the class. âI slept in,â she muttered.
âMhm, I bet you did.â Lysandra gave her a knowing look that had Aelin blushing and turning back towards the front of the class where an older looking blonde woman had just entered- clearly the Professor- and placed her things down beside the standing desk.
Thc class went silent faster than Aelin had ever heard in her life.
But it seemed her Professor had no intention of being the mean stereotype and a playful smile crossed her face before she turned back to the massive chalkboard, chalk in hand.
âI,â her voice somehow rang loud and clear through the entire room. â, am Professor Verbena. But you can call me Elena.â She turned back towards everyone. âWelcome to freshman year Chemistry in what I am assuming is all of your first official day of college.â She clapped a little, a grin on her face, even as the class remained silent. Elena arched a brow.
âA quiet bunch, huh? Well, thatâs all right, weâll get that sorted out quickly enough. Alright, youâve all taken Chemistry before, so I donât see the point in treating you like children.â
Elena raised herself onto the high chair behind her desk and sat down. She could see everyone from here and Aelin attempted not to shiver as their eyes met from across the room before Elenaâs gaze continued its sweep.
âLetâs have a warm up recitation, shall we?â
Oh, fuck. This was not going to be good. The only thing Aelin had ever been able to memorize from Chemistry was the periodic table. Even now she knew it by heart, but that was about it. Still, she knew the academic achiever in her would send her hand shooting up even if she didnât know the answer.
âRecite the periodic table of elements.Â
Aelinâs heart leapt and before she could think better of it she was raising her hand.
Elena grinned at the eagerness no one else seemed inclined to show and nodded. âYes, MissâŚâ
Aelin stood, shoulders back. She grinned. âGalathynius.â
Elena nodded. âGo ahead, Miss Galathynius.â
âH- Hydrogen.âÂ
Her Professor nodded once more, and Aelin was opening her mouth to continue before noticing Elenaâs gaze and raised brows toward the other side of the room.Â
âYes, MrâŚ?â
âWhitethorn.â
It took every bit of will power from Aelin to keep her mouth from dropping to the ground as her gaze snapped towards the sound of the familiar voice. Coming face to face with Rowan Whitethorn in class was the last turn she had expected this awful morning to throw at her.
But there he was- all six foot four of him- and his silver hair looked brighter than usual and his eyes seemed to sparkled like he knew something she didnât as he met her own gaze with a smirk. She tried to keep her eyes from wandering down his body- tried not to glare at the tattoo that curled down his strong arm and face. Gods, she hoped this rivarly wouldâve ended by now. But no- her hackles were more than raised as he turned back to their professor and opened his mouth.
âF- Fluorine.âÂ
âVery goo-â
âHe- Helium.â Aelin couldnât stop the words as they flew out of her mouth.
Rowanâs eyes were on her as an amused grin appeared on his face. âNi- Nickel.â
âLi- Lithium.â If he wanted to play, sheâd play.Â
âSi- Silicon.âÂ
Mg- Magnesium!â Aelin knew her voice was higher than it had been moments ago- but competitiveness always had gotten the better of her. Her heart was pounding as Rowan raised a brow at her, accepting the jab in their battle.
âFe- Iron,â he shot back, gaze holding hers with fire.Â
âO- Oxygen,â Aelin snapped, her head tilted accusingly.
âMiss Galathynius and Mr Whitethorn!â
Aelin gasped at the sound of Elenaâs voice and both her and Rowanâs heads snapped backed to their Professor, who had obviously been watching the two like a tennis match. She felt a deep blush attacking her face as the embarrassment of the whole situation really hit her- it was the first day of class and she had already made a spectacle of herself.
âCalm down,â she said, a small smile on her face.
She glared at Rowan from the corner of her eye to see that he too was looking down at his feet, one of his hands scratching the back of his neck. He cleared his throat.
âSorry,â the two mumbled at the same time. Aelinâs felt the tension melt from her shoulders at the competitiveness seemed to fade from the room and she straightened her back. She was better than petty competition. Especially with Rowan Whitethorn.
A knowing smile curled onto Elenaâs mouth and her eyes crinkled as she motioned between her and Rowan. âIt seems to me like the two of you have this so- called, âchemistry.ââ Elena laughed at her own joke and shook her head. âCheesy.âÂ
Aelinâs hands slipped into her back pockets and she leaned back on her heels as Rowan cleared his throat once more. âOf course we have chemistry, maâam.â
âHmm?â the older woman smiled.
Rowanâs head jerked to Aelin who glanced at him in return. âSheâs my girlfriend.â
Aelin lookd at her feet before pointing to Rowan with her thumb, still not looking a him. âAnd heâs my boyfriend.â
Elenaâs eyes were practically in her hairline as she looked between the two once more and realized they were serious. âOhâŚâÂ
Rowan grinned and Aelin wanted to strangle him for the words that left his mouth.Â
âSheâs a compound of Barium and Beryllium.â
Aelinâs head was in her hands. She hated dating a science major- even if he was the only reason she had passed high school chem. âBecause sheâs a total BaBe.
âShut up,â she deadpanned, looking at the ceiling.
Rowan fidgeted and coughed before he was ducking his head down. âYes, babe.â He mimed zipping his mouth shut and Aelin couldnât keep the smile off of her face. She loved this idiot. To think there was a time she couldnât stand him.
Rowan turned his head until his eyes met her own and a dopey smiled crossed his features. Aelin felt her own melt into a matching one.Â
Youâre an idiot, Rowan Whitethorn.
His eyes sparkled. Maybe. But Iâm your idiot.
A happy blush spread across her cheeks and her smile grew. That you are.
Aelin tucked her chin into her chest before she did something stupid like kiss him in front of their entire classroom. She managed to glance back at their Professor just long enough to catch the words mumbled under her breath as she opened her laptop.

Rowaelin Month day 16 - you accidentally walked into my dorm room
-1k words
-----------------------------------
342. That was her room number. Aelin barely remembered it, but she kept repeating it in her head as she stumbled down the first floor lobby of the dorm building, trying very hard not to look like she was drunk. 342, 342, 342. It was a mantra in her head.
It wasnât like she had a bad memory, itâs just that other things seemed way more important to her when she wasnât sober. Like Rowan Whitethorn. Who needed to remember which dorm room was hers when she could fantasize being with that hunk of muscle instead?
She had to hold back her drool as she pictured him, imagined his green eyes glinting at her when he had a little too much to drink, imagined the way his silvery hair would feel between her fingers if she ever got to run her hand through it, imagined the way his massive arms could hold her up as he fucked herâŚ
Aelin shook her head, clearing it a bit as she trudged toward the stairs, her heels in her hand. Her little crush on Rowan wasnât exactly a secret in their friend group, well, not to anyone but him, and sheâd had to put up with a plethora of jokes about how she must be so sad he was studying instead of going out with them that night. Part of the reason why sheâd left early, though it probably hadnât been the smartest idea.
It was one of the things she liked about him, the fact that he was so studious. He was able to let go and have fun when he wanted to, but was responsible enough to also reign it in when he needed to, and she knew heâd have a fantastic career when he graduated. A career as a - a ⌠lawyer. Yep, that was it.
See, she wasnât drunk.
Aelin giggled at herself as she nearly fell into the door, glad no one was around as she struggled to push it open, her heels nearly tipping out of her grasp as she trounced forward, her dress riding high on her thighs. 342. Which meant the third floor.
The third floor. She alternated between skipping up the steps, like a kid playing hopscotch, and pretending like it was the tallest mountain in the Staghorns, like she was an explorer who was desperate to get to the top. She was desperate, just that short walk was leaving her now desperate for sleep.
A yawn escaped her, like a sound a little puppy would make, and she wiped at her eyes, smearing her mascara as she reached the top of another flight.
Wait, what floor was this? Aelin glanced around, but her gaze was too blurry now to make out the sign properly. Sheâd climbed four flights already. Did she come in through the ground floor or the first floor? Shit, this is why she shouldnât drink. She chewed on her lip as she tried to remember.
Ground floor, she was pretty sure she came in through the ground floor. So two more flights to go.
She yawned again, trudging up the last stairs before throwing her key fob up against the little scanner, unlocking the door. It got her onto all the floors, security wasnât exactly a strong suit here.
It was late, so there wasnât much activity in the hall, most of the girlâs probably either still out or clogging up the showers. Sheâd worry about showering in the morning. And she didnât even bother looking at the room numbers, knowing how far her door was from the stairwell. It was already unlocked, to her surprise, but Lysandra mustâve gotten home before her somehow, or maybe she left the door open, too excited to go out to bother locking it.
Her eyes closed as she entered, and she barely cracked them open as she dropped her heels, clambering into the bed that smelled like home, burying herself in the multitudes of blankets she found there.
She was out less than a minute later.
---------
Rowan Whitethorn just wanted to go to sleep. That was the only thought on his mind as he trudged back to his dorm room, his eyes half shut from exhaustion. Heâd been studying all afternoon and evening, even staying until after the sun went down, when he knew everyone he was friends with was out partying.
Heâd rather be out with them, but he needed to get an A on his exam tomorrow.
Lorcan had not held back in making fun of him earlier, calling him a little goody two shoes. And then heâd sent that picture of them all at the bar while Rowan was at the library, knowing there was one thing in particular that was going to frustrate him.
Aelin Galathynius.
In the picture, she was laughing wildly with Elide, her turquoise eyes lit up with pure drunken joy, her golden locks flowing and her dark red dress hugging her curves deliciously. He wished he could be there with her, throwing back shots of tequila as she made him laugh at one of those dirty jokes she loved to taunt him with.
He was pretty sure he was half in love with her, but she didnât know that. Though he was pretty sure everyone else did.
442.
That was his room number. Right above hers, not that heâd paid attention to that of course.
Rowan opened the door to his hall with his key fob, trudging down the hallway to his dorm. Lorcan had promised heâd left it unlocked for him, considering Rowan didnât have keys, after a certain incident involving a certain blonde. He was working on getting replacements, but knowing his dorm, that would take ages.
And luckily, his roommate had followed through, the doorknob turning without any resistance. Rowanâs eyes were glazed over from staring at a computer screen for hours on end, so all he did was throw his backpack down, kicking off his shoes and heading toward bed. His blankets were all lumped on the side closest to the wall, but he was pretty sure that was him making his bed that morning, in a rush to avoid being late for class.
Rowan didnât care, he just slipped under the single sheet left on the side closest to the window, closing his eyes and immediately falling to sleep.
He didnât notice the warm body that curled into him at some point during the night. Or the way he cuddled closer, as if even unconsciously, he knew this was where he wanted to be.

Aelin enjoyed her life, for the most part. It was a rather simple existence that, however, lacked excitement. She supposed it made up for all of the chaos in her early life but Aelin was beginning to feel bored.Â
Her days were always the same. She woke up, drank some coffee, went out and took care of her late motherâs garden, and then went into work at the flower shop her mother had opened when she was young.Â
part two to this work from day 4!! babes, i am so sorry i had lord huron on repeat and i donât know what came over me but this happened and i was going to end it better but i donât know i just liked it like this, ya know. iâm proud of this one.Â

Rowan trailed a few steps behind Lorcan utterly dejected. He wasnât naive, he knew his infatuation with Aelin could be more than well, that - an infatuation. Yet, there was still a single string of false hope that was tied to his heart, and to hear that they could never be leave Lorcanâs lips hurt Rowan more than he was prepared to acknowledge.Â
He adored Aelin, adored everything about her. He adored her fiery personality and wicked tongue. She was as addicting as the finest drug. He particularly enjoyed it when she told him stories of the time she spent in Rifthold and the Red Desert. He even loved when she talked his ear off about books, he could listen to her analyze and break down the plots of her current reads all day. The passion in her eyes was intoxicating.Â
an:Â a shoutout to @morganofthewildfire for this one- it was supposed to be a delayed day 11 fic but I happened to read hers as soon as it came out. shattered my heart and probably those of so many others (thanks for that by the way) so i felt that i had to write something to make up for it. so here it is, cute and fluffy, and hopefully serves as stitches for the tears in your heart that fic will leave :)

It was too late for this.
Rowan groaned as a loud clang from the kitchen startled him from his comfortable sleep, and he glared at the closed door of his bedroom. Sure enough, he could see a bit of light peeking out from the bottom.Â
Having been roommates with Aelin for almost two years now, Rowan was more than acquainted with her three am food cravings and was used to the little bit of interruption it granted him. It was too much sometimes, but Rowan couldnât find it in himself to tell her off. He would probably end up apologizing for something instead.
It was common knowledge to everyone (except Aelin herself, apparently) that Rowan was utterly and completely gone for his roommate. And he didnât know how much longer he could stay just friends with her. But the fear of ruining the great thing they had was too much. Coward.Â
Another loud clanging from the outside his door had Rowan snatching off his covers and padding into the kitchen, electing to keep his shirt off due to the summer breeze.Â
Aelin stood behind their kitchen counter in one of those exceedingly distracting nightgowns of hers with a wooden spoon in her hand. She held it over a bowl as a bit of brown liquid dripped off- Rowan didnât know what in the gods she was supposed to be making, but it didnât look correct. Her golden hair was down in a knot at the nape of her neck and a few pieces hung out teasing him.
Rowan dragged a hand through his hair. âWhat are you doing, Aelin? Itâs three in the morning.â
Aelin spun around with wide eyes, effectively flicking brown mixture over their cabinets and even over a little bit of her nightgown and face. Her empty hand went to her chest as she glared at him.
âGods, Rowan! You scared me!âÂ
Rowan grinned, taking a few steps toward her to snatch the spoon from her hand and peek inside of the bowl. A lumpy liquid looked back at him as he heard Aelin huff.
She stuck out her chin. âIâm making a cake.â
âAnd thatâs great, Ae, but do you have to make it before the ass crack of dawn?â
The blonde rolled her eyes as she came to stand beside him and grab the bowl and spoon back. Her entire side was pressed into his and Rowan tried to keep his breaths equal as her scent enveloped him like the warmest blanket.Â
âGive me this, Buzzard. If youâre going to be a hater you can leave.âÂ
He grinned at her. Gods, all he wanted to do was wrap his arm around her waist. To pull her to him and kiss her like she deserved to be kissed.Â
But he couldnât. So instead he cleared his throat and leaned against the counter opposite her, effectively putting the space between them he desperately need to survive. He rubbed his palms together.
âOkay, then.â That had Aelinâs head snapping up to his, a question in her eyes. âLetâs make a cake. Cause this sure as hell isnât one.âÂ
He assumed Aelin would be offended- that she would scoff and flick more batter at him for badmouthing her cake. Instead, a blinding smile broke across her features, making Rowan lose his breath.
âYouâre gonna bake with me?â
âNo,â Rowan corrected, opening the trash can for her. âIâm going to bake. Youâre going to help me while I make sure you donât burn the kitchen down.â
This time she did look offended, even as a delightful blush coated her cheeks. Aelin crossed her arms in front of her. Rowan elected to ignore her, instead squinting at the recipe book Aelin had open and leaning on the wall in front of them. He began to make the cake- it looked simple enough.
âYou just want my company cause youâre so lonely.â Rowan snorted.
âIâm not that lonely.â Now it was Aelinâs turn to snort.
âYeah, sure.â
He placed the flour in the bowl and turned to her. âIâm not! I have you, donât I?â He flicked her nose.Â
The smile that Aelin gave him was enough to have him melting through the floor- and as if that wasnât enough, the way she grabbed his hand laced her fingers with his own was enough to send him to an early grave.
âForever and always.âÂ
Rowan thought he stared at her for a little too long before ultimately clearing his throat and gently pulling her hand back to finish the cake. In record time it was in the oven and all that was left was to wait. He and Aelin sat down at their barstools.
It was five minutes of comfortable silence before Aelin sprang up from her seat and rushed to her room, coming back with her phone in her hand, now playing a gentle melody as she put on a classical playlist. Rowan recognized it immediately- his mother had shown Aelin the playlist when she had come to visit the last time. She had remembered.Â
Aelinâs blue eyes twinkled and Rowan was utterly at her mercy as she took his hand and pulled him off of his chair.
âDance with me, Rowan,â she whispered into the space between them. Who was he to deny her?
Aelinâs arms came around his neck as his own hands found her waist, pulling her into him in more of a hug than anything. But her face was in his neck and they swayed silently, neither one of them caring that they werenât even truly dancing.
The feeling of having Aelin in his arms- of finally being able to hold her how he wished to- of having her scent so close- it was going to destroy him. And Rowan couldnât control himself as his hand found the hairtie and gently removed it, letting her hair fall down to her shoulders.Â
He felt her own long fingers weave into the hair at the nape of his neck and Rowan knew the way he purred when her fingers began to lightly scratch was embarrassing. He couldnât find it in himself to care as he held her even tighter.Â
âRowan.âÂ
He pulled back slightly at the sound of her voice to look down at her.
âFireheart?â
Her eyes were heavy with unsaid words before she shook her head. âI just- youâre⌠my best friend. I just hope you know that.â
âAnd youâre mine,â he told her earnestly. âEven if you do wake me up at three in the morning to bake a cholesterol-inducing cake.âÂ
Aelin tipped her head back and laughed, the sound hitting something in his soul and the sight of her smile enough to be the balm for the pain of his unrequited feelings. Rowan had yet to realize that the two were still moving, swaying to the beat of the sweet melody in the corners of the morning. But Rowan didnât care. There was nowhere else heâd rather be.Â
Aelin had stopped laughing, apparently realizing Rowan was staring at her. She quirked a brow but remained in the circle of his arms.
âWhat?â she chuckled and raised her palm to his cheek. âWhat is it, Buzzard?â
Rowan looked at her for a moment before his inhibitions were disappeared.
âOh, fuck it.â
As gently as he could, giving her time to pull away if that was what she wanted, Rowan cupped Aelinâs cheek and brought his lips down to hers. And thank the gods she didnât pull away because kissing Aelin was better than he had imagined even in his head.
As his fingers tightened around her waist, her own curled into his hair, tugging with the perfect amount of pressure to elicit a small groan from him as he parted his lips with her own to allow his tongue to lightly brush her own. Aelin gasped into his mouth at the sensation and Rowan swallowed the sound as she pressed herself even closer to him.
His hands began to wander down to her thighs, delighted when she grasped the hint and leaped up, allowing her legs to wrap around his waist and for him to lead them over to the kitchen counter, placing her down gently. Her legs tugged him closer and Rowan finally pulled away, gasping for breath.
He was more than delighted to see Aelinâs chest heaving as well. She had a dark blush covering her neck and a satisfying feeling swept through him as he looked at her, disheveled and beautiful. He had done that.Â
Aelinâs legs remained around him and his own hands were still on her waist as the two stood nose to nose. Rowan couldnât help it as he placed a kiss on her nose. Then on her cheek. And on her other cheek. One on her chin, then another to her lips.Â
Aelin giggled, the sound a balm to his soul as Rowan practically felt her grin against his own.
âAbout damn time, Buzzard,â she whispered. âI thought youâd never get the hint.â
âOh, really,â he tried to snap, but his words held no bite. âLittle Miss, âyouâre my best friend, Rowan.â I thought you didnât feel the same way.âÂ
Aelin squinted at him before her fists were shoving into his bare chest. He didnât budge, although he was a bit offended. His eyes seemed to show it as Aelin bit her lip and looked at him.
âRowan Whitethorn, you are a godsdamned idiot,â she breathed. âIâve been yours since senior year. I made you a freaking valentine and everything! It was cute- had pink hearts and shit.â Aelin ran her fingers through her hair before Rowan caught them in his own and brought her hand to his lips in a soft kiss. âBut I- I thought you didnât feel the same way so I gave it to Sam.âÂ
Rowan was grinning, even as Aelin frowned from in front of him. He leaned forward and placed a kiss on her forehead.
âYou made me a valentine?â
Aelin huffed. âDamn straight, I did.â Her hand found its purchase on his neck once more and she tugged him down until their noses touch. âIn case it wasnât obvious,â she whispered. âI love you.â
Rowanâs heart was going to burst- it was official. But he couldnât help his cheeky smile.
âA bit delayed, donât you think?â
He found Aelin grinning back as her gaze flicked to his lips and she shook her head. âNope. Not with you. I think it was just right.â
âOh yeah?â Rowan asked, leaning closer.Â
âOh yeah.â
âWell, I love you too.âÂ
Aelin kissed his smile, the kiss deeper than their previous one, and Rowan thought he was dreaming because there was no way this was real. Not as Aelinâs hands wandered down his back, trailing lightly enough to have him shivering. Not as-
Rowan pulled back, a thrill running through him at the whimper that escaped Aelinâs lips at the loss of contact. He frowned. âDo you smell something⌠burning?â
It was a Tuesday when her worst fears were confirmed. It was a Tuesday when her life began its free fall toward hell, when the one thing that was supposed to be unshakeable had suddenly been ripped from beneath her feet. It was a Tuesday when they found out, when theyâd gone to the doctor and had been given that sad look that could only mean one thing. There was no hope. And it was a Tuesday when that hope was officially gone, when those green eyes had closed for the last time.
Aelin Galathynius had never had much faith in the world. Sheâd grown up disenchanted by the whole affair, never buying into fairy tales or magic or any sort of hope that people were intrinsically good. But if she had ever harbored any belief that justice was real, that the universe truly rewarded those who deserved it, it was absolutely crushed now. Because Rowan Whitethorn deserved every good thing that he could possibly get from the world, and instead heâd been saddled with the weight of it, with the knowledge he would succumb to its pressure and fall into the oblivion that was waiting for everyone on the other side.
It was cruel irony that the parents whoâd given up and abandoned him when he was little were coming back now to further fuck up his life. To fuck up everything and everyone around him.

day eleven: surprise kisses.Â
this is a continuation of day one.Â
masterlist // kofi // redbubble // etsy
Aelin was buzzing with adrenaline and excitement. She felt it from her head to her toes; even her hands were shaking where she bounced on her toes. Her pom poms by her face were hiding her from the scene unfolding on the field, the plastic strands kissing her face and making her hands itch. Everyone in the stands was on their feet already, dying to know if the football team would manage to get one last touchdown in the last few seconds of the game to win by a single point and take home the state championship victory. Even their coach had told them not to worry with a final cheer.Â
Aelin could tell the boys were vibrating with the same energy she was. Above anyone else, she could tell by the way that Rowan was flexing his hands and pulling them into tight fists before starting the process all over again while Coach Brullo talked to him on the sidelines about the next play. He finally raised his hands to the guard around his face, clenching the plastic bars while he nodded along until Coach patted his helmet twice, and Rowan ran to where his team huddled. Aelin wasnât able to be still, her legs jittering back and forth.Â
It was only a few seconds of Rowan telling his team about the play before they jogged back onto the field around the same time their biggest rivals did. The silver, glittering stag on the side of his helmet held all her attention. Her breath caught in her throat as they all spurred into action. Aelin had to stand on her tiptoes to see what was going on.Â
The other team didnât see it coming, expecting Rowan to throw a pass and immediately going that way. But he had faked them out, his eyes darting around the field for someone to pass to if he needed it. Instead, he was sprinting down the field with speed the Wyverns didnât fully anticipate from him. Gods, he was fast. He always had been. And as he sprinted down the field with the football between his hands, Aelin knew he was going to make it.
And when he did, the crowd lost their minds. Everyone cheering on the Stags was screaming and hugging each other, Lysandra slamming into her side and wrapping her into a hug as the buzzer went off. They had won the state championship by one point, and Aelin couldnât believe it.Â
Rowan was swarmed by his teammates, everyone jumping on him, hitting the top of his helmet, and lifting him into the air. There was a short ride on Fenrys and Vaughanâs shoulders while they carried him toward the sidelines. Someone dumped a large vat of water or Gatoradeâ Aelin couldnât tell from where she stood jumping and screaming on the sidelinesâ over his head while he laughed.
And then she took off running, throwing her poms to the ground and hurtling over the discarded helmets of her friends. When she reached Rowan, he didnât falter as he jumped on her, dropping his own helmet to the ground and supporting her by her thighs.Â
The hold was a bit difficult, what with his pads in the way, but they managed. Her arms were tight around him, her face buried between her bicep and his neck while she fought back tears of pride. His smile was pressed against her skin while she repeated over and over that she was so, so proud of him. Nothing could be better than this, she decided.
Except for Rowan gripping the back of her neck when she pulled back to look at him, absolutely beaming. Except for him tugging her face to his until her mouth collided with his, two smiles coming together, melting away as their lips finally met. The butterflies in her stomach threatened to explode and pour out into the world.Â
âIs this okay?â He finally whispered, their friends screaming in celebration of not just the game but their friendsâ complete and utter idiocy finally coming to an end.
âNothing could possibly be better than this,â she promised, fingers tangling in his silver hair as she kissed him again.
