Simple Green Smoothies... The Book!
Our friends from Simple Green Smoothies wrote a book!
Every page is dripping with gorgeous images paired with well-tested recipes. If anyone knows what they're talking about when it comes to the benefits of whole food smoothies it's Jen and Jadah. They've got a great variety of recipes and lots of insight into how different ingredients works together to create different flavors and health benefits.
Haeve a look at their recipe to see what we mean!
TROPICAL TURMERIC CLEANSER - SERVES TWO 2 cups kale 2 cups coconut milk 2 cups pineapple 1 cup mango Juice of ½ lemon 1 Tablespoon fresh ginger ¼ to 1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric, to taste
You might think this smoothie would be really sweet with the pineapple and mango - but the fruit flavors are balanced out with cilantro and a hint of turmeric. Using coconut water as the base ups the hydration factor and it tastes clean and smooth without any ice or extra water. That's the sign of a great smoothie recipe!
We'll take any excuse to tap into our secret supply of ground turmeric that our friend Alice of Forestbound (fellow Fringe Union member) smuggled back for us from Sri Lanka.
From the smoothie novice, to blender pros, this book has something for everyone and would make a great gift for anyone trying to incorporate more smoothies into their daily routine.
Check it out on Amazon!

Cuppow Gift Guide - Joshua
Selling goods online for four years has turned us into exceptionally critical consumers. We were conscious when we started out; now we’re downright compulsive when it comes to the homework behind shopping and voting with our wallets. We take it really seriously! Being passionate about what we purchase can make a big difference - especially this time of year.
To highlight exactly what we mean; we’ve made our own gift guides! With these, we’re showcasing products that meet our own personal criteria that we carefully consider when shopping for ourselves and those we love this holiday season.
Joshua’s Gift Guide
My values generally veer away from consumer culture and the boondoggle associated with it. But our families still want us to participate in gift giving and receiving - which has only intensified as we’ve brought kids (grandkids!) into the equation. For years we attempted to exclude ourselves, but that can be a delicate balancing act with respect to the values and emotions of people you love. So now we practice an all-inclusive approach! We get a tree to decorate, light some menorahs, and eat potato latkes while opening presents together on December 25th. Everyone is encouraged to give fewer, better gifts instead of a pile of things for the sake of it.
I love American-made products that inspire imagination through adventure or creativity. This year I’m looking to up my urban-dad game with some new city wheels and to get out into nature with my family as my boys (2 years old and 4 months old) are growing, walking, and all that fun stuff. While most of my presents will still be special museum trips, or dinners cooked, here’s a few products I really like and will be psyched to see get unwrapped!
Things I Want!
Worksman Cycles - Classic Cruiser I like that this company offers an American made, but still affordable, basic cruiser. I know that it might not be coolest bike, especially if you ask my friends, but others have told me how durable and reliable it is. I think it looks perfect for cruising around the city.
Thule - Coaster (Bike Trailer)
Thule is a great brand that I trust to be safe and strong. I’m psyched about the idea of packing my boys into this and cruising over to the park to play, or just using it to pick up groceries on the way home.
Gregory Packs - Baltoro 65 My old Mountainsmith pack finally came undone (after 15+ years of service) so its time to get a new backcountry adventure pack. This high ranking pack has great support and is highly rated by Outdoor Gear Lab.
Super Pedestrian - Copenhagen Wheel If I have to bike, why not get this bad ass electric wheel! Lugging two kids and the previously mentioned trailer? Seems like a no brainer to get the assist! And they're located right here in Cambridge, MA.
Sword and Plough - Dopp Kit I’m traveling a bit more now for work, and while my go-to plastic bag functions, its time for a big boy version. I saw this company at American Field, and really liked their vibe. This dopp kit looks perfect for me.
W & P Design - Carry on Cocktail Kit When I fly, I have a drink (it's 1/2 Mad Men and 1/2 nerves). The Moscow Mule is one of my favorite drinks, so this is just a must-have.
Things I Want to Give!
Studio Animaux - Magnolia Gandiflower Canvas Pouch The incredibly talented Natalya Zahn (fellow Fringe Union member) made these beautiful clutches. My wife and Mom are definitely getting one each this year.
MyRider Balance Bike A balance bike for my two year old Emet - I think he’ll love it! Made in the USA and comes with a 5 year warranty.
Green Toys - Recycled Trucks Basically any/all of these toys - Emet loves them and I look forward to handing down toys that he has gotten tired of to his little brother Shiloh.
Beka Adjustable Easel I'd love to send this out to my nephews! It's made in the USA and could provide hours and hours of fun.
LL Bean - Moose River Hat For my Dad, he’ll love this hat and you can’t ever go wrong with LL Bean. I especially love their 100% Satisfaction Guarantee: "We guarantee that we'll hold up our end of the bargain. It's just how we do business." I really respect that.
E. Scott Originals - Beautiful Beast Necklace & The Revival Arrow Hoop Earrings For my wife, because she’s a badass (partner, friend, mama, love) and she’s worth it. Emily Scott is an awesome local artist and has been killing the jewelry game at her shop on E Scott Originals on Highland Ave!
VoyagersK9Apparel - Boxer Winter Dog Coat My boxer, Abby, needs some new winter gear. Last winter was a long one so I want to make sure she's hooked up right this year.
Thanks for checking out the second Gift Guide in our series! Stay tuned for the picks of Aaron, Alison and Cat!
Creating and selling our own products has turned us into exceptionally critical consumers. We were conscious when we started out; now we’re downright compulsive when it comes to the homework and research involved with voting with our wallets. We take it really seriously! Being passionate about what we purchase can make a big difference.
To highlight exactly what we mean; we’ve made our own gift guides! With these, we’re showcasing products that have passed the rigorous standards that we carefully consider when shopping for ourselves and those we love this holiday season.
Greg’s Gift Guide
I love gear! Especially clothing. I love the stuff that comes with fitness, bikes, running, surfing.. but I also love the fashion! I’m trying to bike pretty much every day so I have to work hard to find things that hold up to that and that allow me to do my thing in every flavor of New England weather.
I’m also, like a lot of people, trying to eat a little bit better every day. When left to my own devices I just love junk food. So I have to trick myself into eating well. Having little gadgets or things that are exciting totally works on me.
Things I Want!
Vittoria Bomboloni Fat Bike Tires - Ever since I saw these on my friend Tyler’s bike I have been totally lusting over them. Ilford HP5 35MM Film - When I’m on my own I prefer to use 35mm cameras, Ilford HP5 being my favorite B&W film. I find it much so more fun than taking photos on my phone. Sony RX100 Camera - The above being said... I would like to take better photos en general and I’ve always loved tiny point and shoots that can do so much and still fit in your pocket. Bike Tubes - I get flats more than anyone else I know. These would be a great stocking stuffer for me… Mom. 700c 28-35mm. Buy 'em from your local bike shop - not online! The Athletic Running Jersey - Biking rules but I really got into running this year (sorry bikes!). I have a pretty weak running wardrobe at this point but I’m working on it. Bicycle Coffee Ceramic Drip Cone - My life is like 60% bikes and 40% coffee so I feel that should be reflected more accurately in my choice of pour-over cone.
Things I Want to Give!
Outlier Hoodie - Anyone who knows me knows I am head over heels in love with the company Outlier. Their stuff is really, really built to last. That’s a nice thing to give someone. Vitamix S Series - I’ve loved my own Vitamix for years and if I was looking to spoil someone I love I would get them one of the sleek new Vitamix S Series blenders. Darn Tough Socks - I respect the hell out of what Darn Tough is up to. Made in the USA with a lifetime guarantee. Ibex Glove Liners - Ibex’s quality and standards are very, VERY high. The world needs more companies as considerate and compassionate as Ibex. Kletterweks Hip Flip - Last year I was lovingly gifted a Kletterwerks backpack and I’ve never been so happy with a bag in my life. Fanny packs are looking red hot for 2016. Moon Juice Almond Butter - Moon Juice is my favorite food thing going in LA. In addition to their amazing drinks - they’re pantry items are fantastic and make great gifts.
Hope you enjoyed the first Gift Guide in our series! Stay tuned for the picks of Joshua, Aaron, Alison and Cat!
Cup Club Spin-Off at The Coffee Trike
The Coffee Trike is one of Boston's best small-business success stories. By combining a hand built tricycle, top-of-the-line espresso machine, and a deep passion for the final product.. San Bellino and his team made waves that ripple through the entire New England coffee scene. Any area coffee shop worth its salt knows, and probably dotes over, San and his unique setup.
We teamed up with San on a spin-off of Cup Club - the customer loyalty program that rewards reuse. For one day only, every coffee and espresso drink at The Coffee Trike that went in a reusable cup, instead of a single-use cup, was 100% free! On us! Any cup, any beverage, anything but another disposable cup!
...And it was a hit! We were there to shake hands and high-five everyone who made the conscious effort to choose to reuse. Americans throw away more than 58 billion cups every year, using a reusable mug instead of disposable coffee cups for one year saves 88 pounds of greenhouse gasses, 126 trees, & 76 gallons of water. We truly believe every cup counts and that by looking at how our habits add up we can make little changes that make a big difference.
San and The Coffee Trike served up their last beverages last week as the team transitioned into opening a complete coffee shop in partnership with Massachusetts based roasters Gracenote Coffee. The new shop is located at 108 Lincoln Street, Boston, 02111.
Follow Gracenote Boston on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for more!
Boston Public Market
Boston Public Market is our favorite new spot for all things fresh, local, and in-season. 38 unique vendors have been fantastically organized into what is one part healthy food court, three parts farmer's market, with a dash of grocery store. They've made something that can serve the hungry downtown Boston community just as well as tourists looking to snack or those looking for a central co-op style natural foods store. It's a clean eating triple threat and we love it!
Everything sold at the Market is produced or originates in New England. Siena Farms has a really nice collection of everything from their gorgeous produce to shelves stocked with healthy essentials.
The Market is a civic resource, educating the public about food sources, nutrition, and preparation. The cookbook exchange is an especially nice touch!
Our buddies Union Square Donuts has their own zone!
Not a bad season to be Red Apple Farms either!
To top it off.. The Boston Public Market Association is a not-for-profit 501(c)3! Like we said, this spot is not to be missed and we think it's an amazing addition to downtown Boston. When you go.. Don't forget to bring your own cup to the Mother Juice and join in on the Cup Club fun - your juice/smoothie could be 100% free.

Cup Club at Mother Juice in Cambridge, MA + BPM
We're thrilled to announce our newest Cup Club partner: Mother Juice. Every 10th drink purchased at Mother Juice that goes in a reusable cup instead of a disposable cup is 100% free.
Single-use coffee cups are bad, and juice and smoothie cups fill up trash and recycling bins just as quickly. In our talks with Ellen Fitzgerald, co-founder of Mother Juice, we were fascinated to find out what a small number of customers bring in their own cups. At many juice shops, it's not even an option because the juices are pre-packaged in bottles. Mother Juice proudly pours every cup and already employs a number of waste saving strategies like mason jar deposits included in their cleanses.
Bringing your own cup to a juice or smoothie shop just makes so much more sense. The ingredients are organic and carefully sourced, the preparation preserves the integrity of the vitamins and nutrients, the whole thing screams mindfulness. So why let the final product of all of that go into something that pollutes the planet and sucks up resources when the solution is so simple?
Compostable cups are great. And recycling is becoming more and more common by the minute (especially in a city like Cambridge, MA). But when you get to the grocery store and the question comes up, 'paper or plastic?' ..we've taught ourselves that there is a third option that is better than the two we're presented with. It's time to bring that kind of intentionality to other parts of our lives in an effort to curb the devastating effects of the 58,000,000,000 cups we throw out every single year.
How it works:
Bring in your own reusable cup to Mother Juice in Kendall Square or at Boston Public Market
Order a drink and use your own cup
Mark an X on the Cup Club chalk board at the register
If the your X marks the 10th reusable cup in a row their drink is 100% free
Cup Cub is designed to encourage good behaviors and reward reuse. It's an experiment. Our sole goal is to create a conversation about cups. If one person sees what we're up to and is inspired to bring their own cup, we'll smile knowing that we got one down and have only 57,999,999,999 to go!
We challenge you to change the way you think about ALL single-use waste. While it can seem silly to villainize such a simple and seemingly innocuous part of our day - that's the whole point. Recognizing how the little things add up is the first step to living lighter on the planet.
Heritage Radio
We're proud Kickstarter backers of the brand new heritageradionetwork.com. It's a seriously beautiful web site that creatively chronicles their years of work highlighting the best and brightest in the modern food scene.
In their words, "Our 38+ weekly shows and ongoing news programming define a new era of food media devoted to sustainability, equity and deliciousness." Now that, we can get behind.
Heritage, an independent 501(c)3 not-for-profit, does all of their recording and broadcasting live out of two shipping containers in the heart of Brooklyn. The station itself exists in the back of Roberta’s. Through the magic of technology, you can listen to any of their thousands of episodes as podcasts on demand—wherever you are, whenever you want, always for free.
As part of our underwriting, you can also hear our own Greg's voice in a number of Cuppow commercials on newer episodes of the following shows:
A Few Things with Claire and Erica - Hosts Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo, co-founders of the emerging design site Of a Kind, expand upon the theme of their highly popular “10 Things” newsletter to share their latest and greatest discoveries.
Cooking Issues - Dave Arnold, chef and inventor, answers listener questions on the latest innovative techniques, equipment, and ingredients in the food world.
A Taste of the Past - Linda Pelaccio, a culinary historian, takes a weekly journey through the history of food on A Taste of the Past.
The Farm Report - Erin Fairbanks, Executive Director of HeritageRadioNetwork.org, explores building a strong community and sustainable farm system.
The Food Seen - The Food Seen explores the intersections of food, art & design, and how chefs and artists alike are amalgamating those ideas, using food as their muse & medium across a multitude of media.
We Dig Plants - We Dig Plants brings the 'Culture' to Horticulture.
Fuhmentaboutdit - "Ferment About It!" aims to demystify the art of home fermentation with a primary focus on home brewing beer.
Roberta's Radio
Snacky Tunes - For one hour, every Sunday, HRN studios hosts some of today's most cutting edge musicians and DJs.
We really enjoy everything about the DIY and forward-thinking philosophy that informs and inspires every show. With such a variety there's absolutely something for everyone, and we hope you'll have as much fun listening as we do. Hit us up on Twitter to chat about what episodes you're loving!
Custom Glass Travel Mugs + Bureo Skateboards Giveaway
The Cuppow Glass Travel Mug is now customizable! We're excited to debut this new channel for collabos with our buddies from Bureo Skateboards.
Check it out: Bureo X Cuppow Glass Travel Mug
Bureo designs and manufactures a unique line of innovative skateboards utilizing Chile’s first ever fishnet collection & recycling program. The decks themselves are made from old fishing nets!
Using these nets provides fisherman with environmentally sound disposal opportunities and gives Bureo a highly recyclable and durable raw material. Taking plastic nets that would otherwise remain in the ocean indefinitely, and turning them into shred-ready decks that are built to last is an absolute upcycling home run!
Bureo expanded their offerings this summer by introducing three new sunglass designs made from the same recycled nets. The fully traceable 100% recycled and recyclable nylon fishing net material is such an awesome upcycled resource, we can't wait to see what else they do with it in years to come.
Head on over to our Instagram page where we're giving away a pair of Bureo X Cuppow Glass Travel Mugs and TWO Bureo Minnow cruiser boards today! Winners will be chosen randomly on Friday.. what are you waiting for? Go!
Cup Club at Picnik in Austin, TX
We're thrilled to announce that Cup Club, our coffee shop loyalty program that rewards reuse, is now live at a second location: Picnik Austin.
Naomi from Picnik reached out to us directly after seeing what we were up to with Union Square Donuts. She wanted to know how they could get in on the fun and encourage their customers to enjoy their amazing menu without the need for disposable cups. We worked hard to turn our experiment at Union Square Donuts into a system that offers free beverages for every 10th reusable cup and today Austin residents can go check it out at their location on the South side of town: 1700 South Lamar 400-B Austin, TX 78704.
Picnik offers up exclusively gluten-free, grain-free and paleo-friendly dishes and drinks. Every unique menu item is created without using refined sugars as they sweeten their drinks withcoconut sugar, maple syrup, honey or Stevia. We absolutely LOVED chatting with the Picnik team to learn more about them personally and what drove them to develop such a unique coffee shop. Their dedication helping foster a healthier tomorrow had us convinced that they were the perfect partner for the first, second installment of Cup Club!
So.. head on over! Bring your own cup and you could get your very own paleo butter coffee for free care of #CupClub
Camp BNTO
Camping is the best! But it can be a little, shall we say - humbling, to see how much waste accumulates (and how quickly!) in the outdoors away from trashcans and recycling bins. Here are a few tips on how to use BNTO to keep your footprint small while enjoying the outdoors!
Hands-down the best camp coffee comes from an Aeropress. It’s convenient, quick, and virtually indestructible. The best part? Aeropress filters are designed to be used up to 25x each! You can safely store ~5 servings of coffee in a 24oz tall-boy jar with sugar packets and filters in a BNTO.
Once camp is set up.. it’s time to eat! Use different sized jars to bring perfectly portioned snacks and a BNTO to safely store dips, dressing, or condiments. Just a little treat like this can make the difference between happy camper and hangry camper. Shown here: homemade tabouli and hummus paired with pretzel chips.
Headed away for just a night or two? Store a couple servings of your dog’s favorite food in a quart jar with treats and/or medicine in a BNTO as a safe and simple alternative to plastic bags.
Hope you enjoy putting these to use - tag us on Instagram if you do!

STOP BUYING ICE!
Purchasing ice in a bag is just as bad as buying bottled water - it's expensive and wasteful. Freeze water bottles the night before and then you'll have extra clean water as they melt 🚯 ⛺ 🌎
