Went on a very long walk to scout more places to photograph yesterday. Walked across a plank bridge over a ditch, after a turn I've never taken before, to find myself at the side of a wheat field. Yesterday was a riot of butterflies, silver-washed fritillaries, peacocks, a red admiral and a painted lady, but I also saw two Jersey tigers (Euplagia quadripunctaria) and I forsook all others. Actual lie, I took a whole load of photos of all of them, but the tigers are my favourite at the minute. Amazingly striking in black and white when their wings are folded but underneath, and in flight, a riot of orange and red. I used to think moths were the nocturnal annoyances that reminded you you should have shut the windows before turning the lights on at night. Friday the 13th did its thing, slim pickings on a cold and blustery morning. A kestrel off in the trees but otherwise not much of note. This Crocosmia (Plantnet suggests Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora) the only brightness to be found, but it's a joyful thing to behold at the first crossroads in the woods.
