OCism is also killing good writings. Because writers are creating characters first before having themes and goals. That's why your story sucked.
You have a character sheet and all sorts of details but you can't write a plot to save your life. Your pacing is dogshit.
This is one of the mildest opinions I have about writing. You people are absolutely not ready for my truly scathing takes. Stay strong.
I'm gonna be honest, if a Tumblr post mildly shitting on what you perceive as a flaw you have, has the capacity to make you give up on pursuing writing, then you're the type of artist who's going to be unwilling to improve or learn and will forever create bad art, which is still art, but not something I think even the people around you would lament on "missing out". The alternative is also you're the artist who will double down on said flaw just to "spite the critics", which if you also embody the average fandom tumblr-user, will probably result in the most tone deaf racist art imaginable. So also, not a big loss.

Do you have any recommendations for art courses/tutorials? What do you to study/practice/improve your art skills?
im afraid im the worst person to ask for this.... i guess i should say proko for anatomy, and naoki saito for insight into the art market, but for the most part i learned from bits and bobs from everywhere. theres not a recommendation i could make unfortunately
but nevertheless, i like looking at people much better than i am and study how theyre better than me and yoink their skills and techniques. for example i like the simple way minimalist anime artists draw eyes so i took that, and i liked how edgy anime artists added contrast to their illusts so i took that
so really, my point is to take from all sorts of sources, be it realism or impressionism or whatever. its my belief that many artists on the internet make the mistake of studying *only* the thing theyre interested in, which leads to a rather stagnant improvement and style overall
my philosophy with learning is that you have to eat your veggies (study the boring part) before getting to eat dessert (going crazy with ideas). without the veggies you fail to appreciate the dessert

in general i try not to give definitive answers because i do think as i introduce more solid stories that the "lore" will become clearer (i know its real vague right now😭😭😭)

sooo... i actually want to expand on how i feel about this (loonnggg vent under the cut)
i'll be honest right now, ive always wanted to be rich and famous, mostly in a sort of abstract way. but now that im actually experiencing somewhat genuine virality and interest in my ocs, im coming face to face with how the internet has changed from since when i was actively online
people seem much more comfortable using anonymity to harass (and especially sexually harass) anyone that seems mildly attractive or talented. ive always wondered how people like typh and sashley tolerate their shitty fanbase but now im wondering SERIOUSLY how they tolerate them because i had a really bad minute today where i considered deleting the video or just deleting myself from the internet
comments expressing attraction to my ocs are whatever, like i cant stop you. anti furry comments (yes those still exist) are whatever, i can even handle hate speech in most cases, because i consider myself to have pretty thick skin
but people ACTIVELY EXPECTING ME TO DRAW PORN OF MY OCS, or PUSHING ME TO, yea ok this is starting to get to me.
i blame this on the extremely prevalent "sex sells" idea that people tout to mostly small artists. and ive witnessed it going from "well you gotta do what you have to.. it sucks but yknow!" all the way to "you should draw porn because thats the only time i'll pay attention to you". like the idea that porn and nsfw is expected out of artists (and mostly women mind you) is.... well it makes me feel complicated things
thats why i am VEHEMENTLY against the idea that nsfw/porn work is actually all that "uplifting". youre not really doing anything subversive, youre doing exactly whats expected of you. and if most of the time the nsfw/porn youre drawing just reinforces patriarchal dynamics and beauty standards.. well whats actually being uplifted here?
anyway i just wanted to get this off my chest, i dont like being public about my feelings and experiences but i made an exception for this one because... well you can go into those videos and just look at whats happening in the comments lmao
