Roman - main character .... Ex pedophile hunter (unemployed) on Centrelink who fails to kill himself and then decides to enter animation school to pursue his dream of working in the industry. He is a skilled illustrator and is prideful about it and feels embarrassed to share the space with the shitty artists that the school accepts until he realizes that animation is an entirely different skill set and he feels like he loses his sense of self as an artist and has to start anew as he feels not much better than the artists he was looking down on suddenly. half Korean half Russian. asexual (due to the heavy dose of SSRIs he is on)
Dani - secondary main character .... becomes friends with Roman in their homeroom class but don't share many classes outside of it. He overlooks her art due to her simple and cutesy illustrations until he realises that she has an amazing instinct for motion that he doesn't. She is bubbly and loves pop culture. She is stalked by the more and more obsessive Not Josh due to his delusional mindset that ultimately affects her mental health. Vietnamese
Xia - extremely gifted artist who is both great at illustration and animation that Roman feels is way ahead of him and makes him feel insecure and like he has to work harder to catch up to her. He also feels bitter about it because she is rumoured to be from a really privileged family and was tutored by masters in art from a young age. She is Chinese and has a cold and reserved personality
She ultimately misses out on the internship opportunity despite arguably being the most capable artist which makes Roman feel he's undeserving of it. People speculate it's because of industry biases in favor of hiring men. She got carpal tunnel from training too much which makes her feel lost. She saves Dani from Not Josh tracking her phone.
Kiera: Dani's childhood friend that secretly anonymously talks to Not Josh on discord, convincing him that Dani is interested in him romantically which fuels his delusions. She convinces herself that it's just a harmless joke but it escalates and affects Dani deeply
Not Josh: Asian fetishiser that is lonely and dreams of starting a family and has very bad self esteem as well as unhealthy obsessive tendencies that get worse with time. Is a terrible artist. He is Roman's groupmate for an assignment. Roman recognizes his voice from a failed sting and tells him he knows what he is but he can't prove it
Tristan: Dani meets him on a disastrous hinge date. He is a pretentious film student and loves Wong Kar-wai performatively. He tries to convince Dani that she should work on animating his script (that is really pretentious and terrible and also male gazey gooner shit) and gets really offended when she turns him down and threatens her that his parents are executives and she'll be burning a lot of bridges when she rejects him. Dani shows Roman the script and he laughs at it. he is half Japanese and half German (evil wasian). He is also bisexual but DL about it. He tries to provoke a dog at the rescue to maul him so he can sue Stephan. He is a small fashion influencer who posts a photo of himself that has Andre in the background coincidentally and all the comments say that he mogged him so he deletes the post and has a one sided beef against Andre ever since that Andre is unaware of
Homeroomer: Dani and Roman's first period TA Andy that Dani thinks looks like homelander from the boys . Roman starts calling him this too even though he has no idea what the reference is. He is an unpopular teacher but he's actually the best at animating out of all the staff despite being a TA. He is a hormonal gay man. His mental health gets better after he quits his teaching post
Andre: Dani and Roman's friend that Kiera becomes romantically interested after breaking off her old relationship despite never talking to him. He is Dani's groupmate in the group assignment. He wanted to go to gobelins but had to come to Australia for family reasons as his dad that he never knew growing up has terminal cancer and wrote a letter to him and he feels like it's his last chance to get to know him but his dad turns out to be an asshole. He is secretly a part time model but is embarrassed about it and doesn't tell anyone
Stephan: employee at the animal rescue centre that Dani brings an abandoned baby possum to. He asks for Dani's number to send her photos and updates of the possum and Dani eventually asks him on a date. He is hongkongnese. He actually lives in the same shitty student shared living space that Roman lives in and they're friends. He is studying to be a public defender
