Released in 2007, Cory Doctorow's Little Brother tells the story of Marcus Yallow, a 17 year old high school student radicalized after being detained illegally by the DHS. In this teen fiction piece, Doctorow embeds methods in the book for breaking various surveillance technologies: thwarting gait recognition, RFID spoofing, as well as how to set up decentralized networking.
Mesh networks and other hacktivist tech have been around, but in this post-PRISM landscape, ways taking back anonymity are breaking through to the mainstream. New Scientist released a story on the Meshnet, a Seattle based mesh network that recently closed a successful crowd funding for 'mesh boxes' - hardware that comes equipped with cjdns (software that keeps shared communications encrypted). Similarly, Doctorow's protagonist distributes copies of ParanoidLinux, a fictional OS that is impregnable to the DHS. Running on the Xbox, these systems link together for form the Xnet, a totally secure and encrypted darknet or mesh network.
There are inherent logistical limitations, not addressed by Doctorow, to creating mesh networks. Communications rely on line of sight, and in urban environments, this is increasingly challenging as outlined very well here.
Possible Solution: Open Source platforms like this and Pirate Bay inspired performative flying server stations.
A Million Year Record
Researchers at Southampton University have found a way to record data onto nano-structures embedded in glass/crystals as voxels (3d pixel) in 5 dimensions (x,y,z, plus the size and orientation of the nanostructure). They can read back what they've recorded by using an optical microscope and a polarization filter. The implication being that we have now found a way for all of our combined knowledge to outlast us.
The memory crystal was named after Superman's crystals that told of his exodus across the universe, his origin story. Superman, in his fortress of solitude, reflects and comes to find himself as his father reveals to him his true nature.
