Her pleading won over Anduin’s heart faster than he realized such able to be so swift. Blissfully shaken was the young priest at her willingness - and BRAVERY at that. Lifeless digits met with the mere taste of redemption he promised, yet the slight burning sensation present was one he could explain in its entirety. “Fear,” he spoke simply. “Fear, doubt, despair… All these things turn the Light against you and yours, Lilian. In order for this to work, you must clear your body and soul of them. I must do the same, for only when we are as ONE with the power I intend to utilize may success be possible.”
Anduin had, for the past year or so, devoted an abundance of both time and effort towards manipulating the Light in a fashion entirely BENEVOLENT, and it was what he had learned during that period which he shared now with the one he offered a second chance at life. Taking but a single step away from she who the priest sought to cleanse all remnants of lifelessness from, he closed both hands into gentle fists as DIVINE energy began to swarm about his fingers and veiled gently the glimmering azure of his eyes. “Reflect upon the most pleasant thoughts and memories you can muster, and let their collective warmth into all of your being. This much should protect you. I am ready when you are,” Anduin advised, as ready as he would ever be to change the fate of all which did not LIVE.
She considered his words, carefully. Lilian nodded in whatever understanding poked through the maelstrom of emotions she was feeling, broken free of the cruel apathy undeath provided its sufferers. All she had endured, both before and since death. All that plagued her and haunted her, in those three words.
FEAR. Fear of failure. Fear of the Light's wrath. Fear of abandonment. Fear of reprimand. Fear of the Shadow. Fear of DEATH. Fear that clutched at her intestines and tangled them like branches in the Nightmare. It danced up her spine under the controlling, judging eyes of THE CRUSADE. It froze her to the bone before the unforgiving side of a teacher's ruler the moment her eyes skipped a word in her book. Broken glass on the floor, telling her she was ugly, and would only get uglier the farther she strayed from the Light.
DOUBT. Doubt she could learn. Doubt she could become strong. Doubt that her father loved her. Doubt that she was worthy. WHY ME, DADDY? WHY NOT GET ANOTHER GIRL TO LEARN ALL THIS? (BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT WEAK, LILIAN. ENOUGH STALLING.) A shadow that eclipsed her working mind, cutting it off from its work. A restraint that clasped her by the shoulders and forced her to falter mid-strike. A nagging voice that told her that no matter who she spoke to, who called her a hero, a champion, a FRIEND -- they did not love her. No one could ever love a MONSTER like her.
DESPAIR. The despair of failure. The despair of doubt. The despair of DEATH. It tore horrified screams from her ragged throat when she realized she was dead. It lifted the dams of her tear ducts and caught her when denial could no longer carry her. (HIGH PRIEST VOSS DENOUNCES YOU AS A DAUGHTER. HE'S ORDERED THAT YOU BE EXECUTED IMMEDIATELY.) A shattered heart, like the glass on the ground. Ugly. Monster. Dead. No, worse: UNDEAD.
The more she considered it, rifling through her own memories like a secretary through paperwork, finding something that wasn't too tainted and corrupt to cling to to BANISH her feelings of fear, doubt and despair was starting to prove IMPOSSIBLE. Her life was one of abuse and hard expectations, ending without warning and leaving her in the torment of the Scourge's echoing call. No... Forsaken's, technically. But it didn't matter.
(FEAR, DOUBT, DESPAIR: SO CLOSE, AND YET SO FAR. YOU WILL NEVER LIVE AGAIN.)
Lilian swallowed, refocusing her gaze on Anduin's hands. The warmth still tingled in her fingers, the pain fading and leaving that promise behind. She searched herself, until she regarded the present. She realized: if she had never known happiness before, what was Anduin offering her? What had he found that no one else had, that had seemed impossible?
COURAGE. Something so unprecedented, and yet she leapt for it.
TRUST. If anyone could accomplish this, could save her soul, it was Anduin Wrynn.
HOPE. SHE COULD LIVE AGAIN. Was this moment, then, happiness?
She quickly brushed a hand under her eyes before tears could spill. She forced her lungs to cooperate for a single steady breath, with which to say: "Okay. I'm ready."
