Hello! Welcome to my blog, My name is Maxie, But you can also call me Max :D (I typically answer to any names as well' actually. So long as they are androgynous and/or masculine.)

My pronouns are he/they but you can also use anything else except she/her I like cats, cooking and baking, cartoons, comics, and books. Especially if they're related to robots, sci-fi, and mystery.

I dislike overly bitter things, spicy things, and unnecessary drama in fictional media.

I'm a BIG freak so a lot of my posts will probably be me thirsting over fictional characters (especially monsters and robots)

My main hobbies are writing and drawing. Occasionally I play games too, mainly minecraft these days.

Rocky utilizing the “sum of all human knowledge” to its fullest extent when bickering with Grace:

Here's what I mean by talking about all the decision points in the translation problem in Project Hail Mary (which includes all normal translation problems and then some).

There's a lot of Rocky utterances in the movie that are likd: "Grace Stupid." Non-standard sentence of English, perfectly normal sentence of, say, Arabic. Rocky's translated speech doesn't use the copula (be-verbs). The problem is, where in the process does this fact originate? There are a number of possibilities:

Eridian has no copula

Eridian has a copula but Rocky is choosing not to use it

Rocky is using a copula but it is marked in a way that the translation program can't recognize

There is a copula but Grace hasn't recognized or elicited it yet

There is a copula but due to linear placement translating it as such would make Rocky's utterances less comprehensible

Grace doesn't think the copula is linguistically necessarily and so doesn't bother

So for every linguistic feature we can derive, we have to ask (and I think mostly we can't know) - is this a fact about Eridian, is this a choice Rocky is making, is this an artifact of the technology, or is this a choice Grace is making?

What would be really interesting is if it changes over time. I haven't read the book but if it were me I would make it change over time.

i love the "grace somehow lives as long as an eridian" interpretations of the movie ending cuz i honestly think something like that could happen in cannon and it wouldn't feel out of place.

like they all are solomely accepting the fact that grace is going to die in like a scary amount of eridian years, and then as he gets to like 90 everyone is bracing for it, but he just...keeps aging. he keeps his mobility- if anything his back is getting worse cuz of the slightly increased gravity, and his health seems to be steady. on the day of graces 122nd birthday (the oldest a human has ever lived) the eridian scientists that study grace are like. hey. what the fuck. and grace is like ┐(´～｀ˇ)┌

another thing i appreciate about project hail mary the book is that the happy ending in still under construction. and complicated. I loved the film, but the book doesn't give us a magic perfect human habitat and i LIKE that.

Grace only recently got food that tastes okay. the dome is as comfortable as the eridians could make it, but its not a hyper-realistic recreation of earth. the gravity of Erid hurts grace. there's still a literal wall between him and the people (person) he cares about.

when the question of whether grace wants to go back to earth comes up, its not as simple as 'do you want to stay here with your best friend rocky?' its also "how long can your body handle this?" and "how long will you endure it?" and "do you ever want to have arms around you again?"
