The smoking (both cigarettes and weed) helped with her anxiety. There were few options given the limited amount of medicine able to be produced so Ellie did what she could to alleviate it in the one of the only ways she knew how. She wet her lips before glancing over at Dina, the corners of her mouth twitching slightly as her eyebrows arched. âIâve never smoked around him, babe.â It didnât take long for her to finish off the half cigarette. She let out one final exhale of smoke before butting it out on the heel of her bootâan idiosyncrasy sheâd unconsciously picked up from someone she had been spending time with. âA guy I met the day I got back. Heâs really tall, has a nice beardâŚâ Not the most specific descriptors. She went to sit beside Dina on the swing and smiled sweetly at J.J who was watching her with his fist stuffed into his mouth. He was likely still teething so he would chew on just about anything he could get his little hands on. âRudy, he said his name was. He has a friend that grows tobacco so heâs got connections I guess. Gave me a few cigarettes⌠They help some.â Ellie looked well put together despite the seemingly permanent bags under her eyes and she was wearing her hair up again although now it was wet without any loose strands sticking out of place. She reached over to grasp J.Jâs foot and playfully tickle it until he gave a kick of his leg and giggled. It made her smile. âHey, spud. You look sleepy. Is it nap time yet? Hmm?â she cooed.
Dina rolled her eyes with a smirk. As if she didnât already know that Ellie hadnât smoked around JJ. âAnd youâre not about to start,â she told her, shooing her away if she was so desperate to finish the cigarette. Dina understood the temptation and lure of vices, especially in the world that they lived in. She certainly wasnât one to turn down a drink when offered. Sheâd leave the smoking to Ellie, though.Â
The description Ellie gave of the man sheâd gotten the cigarette from sounded...familiar. When his name passed her lips, Rudy, Dina couldnât help but chuckle. Okay, so it was the same guy sheâd been thinking of. They may or may not have attempted to go on a date in Ellieâs absence, but Dinaâs heart couldnât bear the idea of even potentially being with somebody else. The wounds had been too fresh, not yet healed, possibly never healed. And Rudy, that gentle giant, had promised her that no harm had been done - they could tend to a friendship instead. Dina hadnât seen him around often since then, but gave him a sweet smile and the occasional squeeze when she did. No, Jackson wasnât a massive town. But it was a little ironic that Ellie had somehow become friends with the one person who had dared to take her partner on a date while she was off in Santa Barbara. âI know Rudy,â she said casually as Ellie took a seat beside her, and Dina let her dangling feet ghost absentmindedly against the side of her girlfriendâs shin. A gentle sign of affection that wasnât glaringly obvious, just like they used to when they were kids. âHeâs a nice guy. Big teddy bear. Hard to believe he has a connection to anything,â she teased. Truthfully, Dina wasnât surprised that Ellie and Rudy had struck up a friendship. His energy was warm and trustworthy, but cool enough for Ellie to want to get to know him. A bit like Jesse if she was honest with herself. Theyâd be best friends in no time, she was sure of it. âIâm glad they help, but--â Dina stopped herself. She wasnât going to mother hen Ellie. She was a big kid, capable of making her own decisions. That much she had already proven. She rubbed her lips together before pursing them. When Ellie looked at her expectantly, waiting for Dina to finish her sentence, she simply smiled. âTell me how you met Rudy,â she said instead, changing the course of the conversation as Ellie toyed with JJâs little foot. He squirmed in Dinaâs lap and she couldnât help but laugh when he did. She could already feel her heart turning to mush with every moment they spent together as a family, reunited once again.
