The times when Steve wasn’t away on a mission were turning into your favorite times. It felt almost as if everything was normal, almost as if you were one of those normal couples out there on the street.

Except deep down, you knew you weren’t.

Even so, you thought you could stay this way forever. Steve’s head was resting in your lap while he sketched on his notebook and you were going over your emails. There was an old song that you didn’t know about, coming from the old phonograph at the corner of the room as you ran your fingers through his hair and overall, it was so peaceful that you thought if you could freeze this moment, you would.

His phone beeped and he checked it,

“Y/N?”

“Hm?”

“Tony says we should watch Star Trek.”

“Tell him Harry Potter is better.”

Steve’s phone beeped again a couple of seconds later and he scoffed.

“What?”

“He says you’re fired.”

“He wishes.” You stated as you rubbed your eyes and Steve sat up.

“No no no, where are you going?” You asked as you stood on your knees, wrapping your arms around his neck from behind, “Lie back down and no one gets hurt, Rogers.”

“I gotta take a shower if we’re going out,” he chuckled, “Y/N…”

“What?”

“Darling, I gotta get up.”

“Good luck with that,” You said with your nose in the air, then let out a high pitched squeal when he stood up with you on his back.

“Steve!”

He laughed wholeheartedly as he put you down and turned to face you.

“Jesus, warn a girl the next time!” you said “Hey, completely irrelevant to your ability to lift me with no difficulty, do you want me to join you?”

A heat spread over Steve’s cheeks, “Hm?”

“In the shower?” You wiggled your brows and Steve averted his eyes, as if he was embarrassed.

“Doll-“

“No pressure Rogers, just asked.”

“I actually have a plan about that which doesn’t include shower.”

Your head shot up, “Plan? What plan?”

Steve only smiled and you crossed your arms.

“Unless you want to see me in my completely mismatching underwear, you gotta let me know beforehand.” You said and Steve raised his brows.

“Yeah. Tragedy there.”

“Come on!” You insisted and stood on your tiptoes to peck him on the lips, “Spill. What’s your plan?”

“I just think…” he cleared his throat, “That you deserve better than that.”

“What?”

Steve shrugged, as if he was stating the obvious, “You deserve something special.”

You thought your heart melted, “Wait, what?” You heard yourself ask, “Steve I- you know I’m not… I’m not a virgin, you know that right?”

“That’s irrelevant.”

“So you want that- that whole deal? Romance movie deal?” You asked, “What with the candles and petals and everything?”

Steve nodded, making you smile,

“You’re something else, Capcake.” You said, pushing him slightly, “Go ahead then. Take your shower.”

He pecked you on the lips and made his way to the bathroom, and you tried to control your smile.

“Jesus, I’m in so much trouble…” You muttered to yourself, and walked to the kitchen to make yourself and him some coffee. You filled your cup, inhaling the scent as you walked past the table but was distracted by the small noise on his laptop and his screen lit up.

It was almost instinctual.

You took a look at the new mail that automatically popped up on his screen, then your blood ran cold.

From: Tony Stark

Attachment: NY Rehab Center for Addi….

“What the fuck?” You muttered as you clicked on the attachment and your eyes skimmed the lines.

“NY Rehab Center for Addiction has helped over two thousand individuals with drug and alcohol addictions….” You read out loud, then licked your lips and shook your head, still staring at the laptop screen.

Of course.

You didn’t even know why you were surprised.

Even if you wanted to go in the bathroom and demand and explanation, you managed to control yourself. You listened to the water running only for a couple of seconds before you grabbed the pen and paper on the coffee table.

Then, you grabbed your jacket and walked out of the apartment.

“You know…” Jake said, “I’m just gonna say it.”

“Don’t say it.”

“Don’t smash that bottle on my dick.”

“Don’t fucking say it.”

“He’s doing it for you.”

“Jesus Christ!” You made a face and downed your shot, “You’re such a fucking cliché, seriously…”

“You’re dating Captain America, okay?” Jake said, “Are you really surprised that he wants you to be-“

“Jake,” You cut him off, “Shut the fuck up. My glass is empty.”

He filled your glass, shooting you a look as your phone started vibrating on the bar counter.

“Answer.”

“You know, I’m gonna be equally annoying when you get into a relationship.”

He scoffed, “I don’t do relationships.”

“Oh boy, I said the exact same thing and here we are…” You waved the phone, then pushed your chair back and stood up to walk outside.

“Hey.”

“Where are you?” Steve’s voice was stern and you clicked your tongue.

“Tony didn’t tell you?”

“Y/N.”

You licked your lips, trying to contain the fury, “You went behind my back?”

“You went through my mails?” Steve asked back and you scoffed.

“Ain’t my fault if you didn’t bother putting a password on your laptop. It automatically switches on, you should get that fixed.”

“…Sure it does.”

“I’d ask if you didn’t trust me, but I think we both know the answer to that. Hey, a clue? Two way street right now.”

Steve huffed out a breath, “Y/N….”

“The one time I don’t hack a dude I’m hanging out with, and this is what I get?” You asked, “Lovely.”

“Where are you?” Steve insisted and you bit inside your cheek.

“Exactly where you’d expect me to be.” You brushed him off, “I’ll call you when I’m ready to talk.”

Before he could say anything, you had already hung up and tried to clear your vision by blinking fast a couple of times, then went back inside.

“As I was saying,” Jake said as soon as you climbed to your seat again, making you groan.

“Fuck’s sake…”

“He wants to see you in a better shape, Y/N, that’s all.”

“Since when are you a shrink?”

“Since I became a bartender. Comes with the job, to be honest.”

“I hate you sometimes.”

“You hate everyone.”

“With good reason!” You protested, “My friends turned out to be Brutus and his buddies.”

“Right,” Jake shot you a look, “Or they’re just worried about you.”  

“I’m fine. I’m- I’m great actually.”

“Yeah, perfect picture of health there,” he motioned at you and you flipped him.

“I’m just gonna go home.”

Jake looked around, “Okay, give me five minutes.”

“I can walk home, Jake.”

“I’m not letting you go home by yourself and risk getting my ass kicked by Captain America.” Jake stated, while you rolled your eyes, “I’m taking you home.”

Jake didn’t stay after dropping you off. Even if you insisted, he said he still had to work and didn’t want to be subjected to Captain America’s glare in case he found him at your place again, a statement which made you groan and object, but in the end, he left, leaving you alone with your laptop and your guilty consciousness.

Fine. Maybe you had been just a little defensive.

Maybe.

But what Steve didn’t know about you was that you had already tried rehab. Back when, right after Trent fucking you up, you had checked yourself in and-

Well. The rest was history.

And it wasn’t like he couldn’t ask you first. He had more than enough opportunities to bring up the subject-

Except that you had been defensive then too.

“Why am I like this?” You looked up, rubbing your eyes and turned your head when you heard someone knocking on the door. You almost fell down with the chair but managed to find your balance, then rushed to the door to open it.

The first thing you noticed about Steve’s appearance was that he was way too tense. Even if you wanted to reach out to hug him, you managed to control yourself and leaned sideways to the door.

“Hey.”

“Hi,” he said, “Can I come in?”

You nodded, your stomach flipping before you let him in and closed the door.

“Listen-“

“I’ve been-“ you both spoke at the same time and you paused,

“You first,” Steve said and you took a deep breath,

“I haven’t gone through your emails since we got together,” You said, “I wasn’t lying about that.”

“Okay,”

You pursed your lips, “You don’t believe me huh?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You don’t have to. Written all over your face. I know disappointment when I see it.”

“Disappointment?” he repeated, “Y/N, that’s not it. I just-“ he paused, running a hand over his face, “I’m worried about you, okay?”

“You don’t have to.”

“You said you saw Trent.”

“Hallucination of Trent,” you corrected him, “Besides, that was when I tried quitting, in all honestly drinking sort of keeps that away-“

“And how about everything else?” Steve asked and you scoffed.

“What everything else?”

“Bucky says you looked like a mess when he got here.”

“Bucky needs to limit that bro code.”

“Getting drunk all the time, throwing up…” he paused as his eyes searched yours, then a look of realization dawned on him, “Your eyes are bloodshot.”

“That happens.”

Steve’s shoulders tensed up and you walked past him just to do something, to get away from the incredible heavy feeling in your heart, and leaned back to the counter.

“Why are you here, really?” You asked him, nervousness filling your system faster than drugs, “I thought you and Tony would be looking at the rehab catalogues.”

A bitter smile pulled at Steve’s lips and he crossed his arms.

“I’m not having this conversation with you when you’re drunk.”

Okay, this conversation really wasn’t going well and you needed to stop, or else…

But you couldn’t. The alcohol, along with the tenseness roared in your system and you clicked your tongue.

“Well that leaves you out of options Spangles, because in case it has escaped your notice…”

“It hasn’t escaped my notice.”

“No? Could’ve fooled me.”

Steve took a deep breath, “I’m worried about you,” he repeated, “So is Tony. So is everyone, ever since this Trent business came up-“

“I was handling it!” You snapped, “I had it under control, okay? Yeah I was on the run, no one was pressuring me to- to-“

“To what?” Steve’s voice was dangerously low and you gulped.

“Listen, you were the one who made this secret deal with Fury to  go hunt his ass,” You threw your hands up, “Not me. I was fine running away, but-“

“Until when?”

“Until forever. Until one of us dies.” You insisted, “If you wanna play the hero, you’re talking to the wrong girl, I just want everything to-” You gritted your teeth, “I’m trying my hardest to make it stop but none of you let me.”

“Drinking yourself to death won’t make him stop, Y/N.”

“For fuck’s sake-you-what“ You stammered “How I- how I handle my shit is my business.”

“No it’s not. Not anymore.”

“Because you said so? You think- you think just because you decide to, I’ll go all oh captain my captain because-“ You shook your head, biting on your lip, “That’s not how it works, Rogers.”

Calm down, don’t say anything stupid…

He shut his eyes for a second, before he opened them to look you dead in the eye, pinning you to your spot.

“Y/N-“

“You can leave if it’s too much.”

Like that.

Fuck.

Steve raised his brows, “I’m sorry?”

“I mean we’re not-“ you couldn’t control the bitter laugh escaping your lips, “Forget it.”

“No, what did you mean?”

Yeah honestly, what had you meant?

Because there was no way you had just implied…

That.

There was a horrible silence in which the only thing you could hear was your fast heartbeat, pounding in your ears and Steve stared at you for a couple of seconds, then wetted his lips.

“You know where to find me when you’re sober,” he let out a bitter chuckle, “Sorry. If.”

“If I’m sober?” You asked and he shrugged,

“If you want to find me,” he corrected you and walked out of your apartment, and as if on cue, tears filled your eyes.

“Fuck.”
