career options for illustrators are probably too vast for me to provide a really comprehensive answer. concept art, pattern design, medical illustration, book illustration, comics, etcā¦ the list really goes on, andĀ iĀ think most freelance illustrators make a career out of work within several differentĀ niches. do someĀ research! identify the kind of work youĀ enjoy making (decorative, conceptual, technical, etc) andĀ go from there.Ā i foundĀ checking out creative job listings to beĀ really useful whenĀ i wasĀ gathering information about what different full-time/salaried jobs in creative fields look like. iāveĀ never relied entirelyĀ onĀ freelance work, soĀ iĀ donāt think iĀ can provide the bestĀ advice where thatās concerned.
i actually work as the full-time designer for a small college! while i love illustration, iāve always been equally passionate about graphic design. this work has the added benefit of affording me enough stability (salary, health insurance, vacation time, etc) to do the kind of illustration iĀ really want to, whether that includes freelance projects or personal work. itās a path iām really happy with.
