catch up here
The start of the spring semester started abruptly and without much warning. The month off was enough to make Stella comfortable doing nothing. Except here she was, back at the library working her evening shifts, rushing to early morning classes and finding little time to breathe in between.
Of course there was also the getting used to new routines aspect of a new semester. This was Stellaâs least favorite part. It was just when she got used to things, they changed again.
What didnât change was Niall, though. He was still the very same, soft eyes meeting Stellaâs from across the dining hall table. His hand in hers when they walked back to his room. This was exactly the same.
Stella periodically thought, âhow lucky am I?â in regards to Niallâs kindness. She didnât doubt for a moment that she was lucky, not taking any moment for granted.
That was why she kissed him more than usual, thanked him for everything and hoped he knew how grateful she was. There was a bit of fear inside of her, that this would come to a crashing end. Stella would be destroyed. She knew she would.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Niall asked, unlocking his door. âYouâve been quiet all evening.â
âJust thinking,â Stella shook her head as they walked in. âTired. Stressed. You know the bits.â
âRight but...â Niall trailed off with a chuckle. âThose arenât usually things that keep you quiet.â
Stella silently cursed him as she collapsed in his bed. âDonât know what you mean.â
âIâm sure you donât,â Niall rolled his eyes, taking his jacket off. âYou know me. Talking absolute none sense.â
âRight,â Stella agreed, crawling under his duvet.
âYou have homework,â Niall reminded her, sitting down at his desk. âAnd so do I. You said you were going to do it.â
âItâs not due for another two days,â Stella argued, eyes fluttering as her senses were overwhelmed by being in his bed. They always were. Â
âWell mineâs due tomorrow morning so I have to...â he trailed off, looking over his shoulder at her. âI have to get mine done. Stop looking like that.â
âLike what?â Stella asked, laughing.
âLike that,â he emphasized. âIn my bed. I need to focus.â
âStop looking at me,â Stella laughed, shaking her head.
âFuckinâ hell,â he muttered, turning around in his chair. âBut I know youâre laying there waiting for me.â
âTake your time,â Stella murmured, relaxing against the mattress. âIâm not moving any time soon.â
This time when Stella closed her eyes she thought about New Yearâs Day. She had to open her eyes, feeling breathless at the thought. She had no business thinking about that now.
âItâs an easy assignment,â Niall told her. âA discussion board on whether or not Napoleonâs invading Egypt was ethical or not.â
âInteresting,â Stella mumbled. âThe answer is no, correct?â
âI have no idea,â Niall shrugged. âAnd thatâs what Iâm writing. I literally do not know.â
âHonesty,â Stella commented. âNice.â
Stella lasted ten minutes before she fell asleep. Niall was engrossed in his work, unaware. January was miserable in Manchester. Rain and gloom. It wore Stella out, exhausted her. Most nights, she preferred Niallâs bed over her own but she didnât usually let herself stay. Maybe tonight would be different.
âStella,â Niall drawled out, closing his laptop. âI finished now we can...â he trailed off, settling his eyes on her, âhang out.â
Niall got into bed beside her, not caring if he woke her up. He didnât. He settled beside her, staring at the ceiling until he couldnât take it anymore.
âStella,â he mumbled, nudging her.
âNiall,â Stella mumbled back, nudging him with her foot. âShhh.â
âNo,â he laughed. âWake up. Itâs only seven.â
âIâm tired,â Stella emphasized, rolling into her back. âWhat is the reason you woke me?â
âOversleeping can increase your risk of heart disease and obesity,â Niall answered, almost robotically. âIâm just looking out for you.â
âIâm looking out for you,â he repeated, laughing.
âaltruistic,â Stella murmured, looking up at him.
âAlways,â Niall mused, pushing his fingers through her hair. âFinished my assignment.â
âGood,â Stella mumbled. âAnything else I missed in the last twenty minutes?â
âYes your phones been going off. Veda,â he told her, though he hoped she wouldnât move.
Stella didnât, eyelashes fluttering as Niall continued to run his fingers through her hair, âIâll fall asleep again.â
âDonât do that weâre hanging out,â Niall argued. âWanna talk to you.â
âAbout what?â Stella asked, tired. âWe talk a lot, you know.â
âI know,â Niall chuckled, letting his hand fall from her hair. âYou can go to sleep.â
âNo we can talk,â Stella shook her head, rolling onto her back. âWhatâs on your mind?â
âI should be asking  you whatâs on your mind,â Niall emphasized. âWhat was that eerie quiet earlier?â
âOh nothing,â Stella chuckled, rubbing her forehead. âJust... thoughts.â
âAbout?â Niall laughed.
âI donât know,â Stella laughed, shaking her head. âNothing. It was nothing. Just tired.â
âRight, the bits,â Niall agreed. âOne day, Stella you will spill your secrets. I just know.â
âTheyâre not secrets,â Stella laughed, looking up at him. âDo you share every thought that pops into your mind?â
âNo,â Niall chuckled. âBut I certainly donât get distracted the way you do. Thinking secret thoughts that are just so secret you canât tell anyone.â
âYou arenât gonna let me out of this one, are you?â Stella deadpanned, eyes narrowing at him.
âI was thinking about it,â Niall laughed. âBut now since  youâve given me that look, no, Iâm not. Spill.â
âI was thinking about last semester. How crazy itâs been,â Stella shrugged.
âThatâs it?â
âAnd what would happen if we broke up,â Stella added, convinced he wouldnât stop until sheâd said it.
âOh,â Niall mumbled, eyebrows furrowing. âThatâs not a good thought. You want... youâd want to-â
âNo,â Stella cut him off with a startled laugh. âNo, of course not. It was just a fleeting thought like Iâd be devastated if that happened, those sorts of things.â
âRight,â Niall agreed.
âYouâre upset?â Stella murmured. It was half a question, half a statement. Judging by the look on Niallâs face, eyebrows knitted together still it could have been a statement.
âNot upset,â Niall shook his head. âI pressed you to tell me and I shouldnât get upset about what you think about. Thoughts are private, you know.â
âRight,â Stella agreed, though she did feel guilty.
âDo you think about that a lot?â Niall asked, looking up at her. Â
âNo,â Stella shook her head. âNever. I never think about it. It just happened upon me. I think I was thinking about how grateful I am for you, and then thought Iâd be crushed if this ends because Iâm so happy with you.â
âWell thatâs a relief,â Niall chuckled. âSo you donât daydream about breaking up?â
âNo,â Stella laughed, sliding her hand into his. âI donât daydream about breaking up.â
âGood,â Niall mumbled, pressing a kiss to her knuckles. âStella Bella, if I hear you thinking about us breaking up Iâll... Iâll... I donât know what Iâll do but itâll be serious.â
âHm Iâm sure,â Stella murmured, letting him pull her in.
Niall slid his hand around her waist and Stella couldnât remember why she was thinking about breaking up in the first place. Niall kissed her softly and it was decided, theyâd never break up because this, between them, was too good to let go.
After further consideration, the next update for YAIN will come on Dec. 14. The last 3 months I have been working full time & going to school full time and I am mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting. I have been feeling the weight of this pandemic very heavily the last few weeks & I need to focus on my finals and finishing this semester. Iâm deeply sorry to disappoint.
We will try for 8pm tonight. My mom and I are cleaning the house, decorating for Christmas, making soup and I have so much hw to do that itâs embarrassing.

Stella rolled over, rubbing her eyes. The events of the night before were almost like a distant memory. Something that didnât feel real but was painfully so. A blur of vodka and glitter and Niallâs hands on her hips in a room full of everyone he knew.
Stella closed her eyes again and she could remember their midnight kiss, the way it made her head spin. A kiss like no other. A kiss that had Stella weak in the knees. Just thinking about it sent a thrill down her spine.
âWhyâre you awake?â Niall mumbled beside her.
âHowâd you know Iâm awake?â Stella asked, all too amused as she rolled over to face him.
Niall rolled over, chuckling as he wrapped his arms around her, âbecause I just know.â
Niall smiled at her and Stella had flashes of the night before in her mind. She remembered watching Nadia walk in with her boyfriend, the twinge she felt for reasons she didnât know. The way Niall hardly noticed, too busy talking to his friends but Stella saw her, saw her looking at Niall, saw her looking at her.
And then Niall wrapped his arm around her waist and introduced them. It was like she was looking in a mirror that showed her the past. Her cool green eyes glinting at Niall like they had age old secrets. Sure, they did, but Stella didnât want there to be secrets. Â
âWhat is it?â Niall asked, smile faltering.
âNothing,â Stella shook her head, eyelashes fluttering. âThanks for carrying me to bed last night.â
âOf course,â Niall murmured, nose brushing against her jaw. âVeda wouldâve pushed you to the floor. Practically saved your life.â
âI appreciate it,â Stella mumbled as his hand slid down her t-shirt clad side, over her hip. His hand stilled, thumb ghosting over her bare thigh.
âStella,â Niall chuckled, pulling away to look at her.âWhere are your pants?â
âLost them,â Stella murmured as if that was a logical excuse. Niall put her in sweatpants before bed, the polite thing to do. Drunk Stella had a mind of her own, though.
âWarn a guy, would ya?â Niall breathed, kissing at her neck.
And there it was, the ache between her legs. Stella closed her eyes, letting out a soft breath. âStel,â he murmured against her neck. âIâm so glad you came.â
âMe too,â she agreed, breathless.
âSorry Nadia came,â he added because it was on his mind too. âI didnât think sheâd...â
âItâs okay,â Stella responded hoping it was convincing.
âBut did you have fun?â Niall questioned, hand slipping beneath her t-shirt, brushing over her ribs, fingers unable to settle on one spot.
âI had a lot of fun,â Stella answered, truthfully. âThe most fun.â
âMy mates liked you,â Niall smiled, letting out a chuckle. âSaid you were funny and too smart for me. Cant believe Veda pulled trivia pursuit out. Even drunk, youâre the smartest person in the room.â
âThatâs high praise,â Stella mused. âThere werenât very many people there, though.â
âThe sentiment still remains,â Niall murmured, nosing along her jaw. âI canât stop thinking about what little clothing there is between us.â
âIâm not mad that theyâre off,â Niall supplied, thumbing over her bottom lip. âItâd be so easy to just...â he trailed off, fingers ghosting over the waistband of her underwear. âSlide my hand down and...â
âBut itâs all up to you, lover,â Niall added, nose brushing against hers. âYou say no, itâs no.â
âItâs-â Stella cut off letting out a breath. âItâs not no itâs...â
âItâs yes?â Niall mused.
âMmm yes,â Stella breathed. âItâs yes. The opposite of no.â
Niall caught Stellaâs lips in a desperate kiss, hips colliding with hers. Stella all but moaned against his lips. She was bursting at the seams, hot everywhere. A hot that made her breathless and achey, that only one thing would fix.
Niall slid his hand between her legs and Stella let out a moan that had Niall cursing against her lips. He tugged sharply on her bottom lip, listening to the way she gasped. Niall decided there was nothing he wanted more than to make her feel good, to make those sounds for him.
When Niallâs hand slid inside of her underwear, Stella was gone, a whimper leaving her lips that Niall silenced with a kiss, desperate and needy. Niall brushed his finger over her clit and Stella moaned, breaking the kiss, âNiall,â she breathed out. âI have to tell you something.â
âWhat?â Niall murmured.
âConner never touched me,â she whispered.
âThatâs such a shame, Stella,â Niall breathed out, kissing her neck. âAll I want to do is touch you. Hear you breathe and gasp and-â he cut off with a groan. âThose moans of yours, lover please.â
âPlease,â Stella whispers, desperate.
Niallâs touches become more intentional, soft strokes that made Stella gasp out, head falling to his shoulder. Niall talked her through it, murmuring in her ear just how much he loves this, how much he wants Stella to get there, to give it to him. Stellaâs orgasm washed over her like a tidal wave. She gasped his name, arching against him and Niall watched every second of it, not wanting to miss a single thing.
Stella collapsed beside him, eyes fluttering shut. Her breathing returned to normal but the flush on her skin remained. Niall kissed her soft and sweet like a thank you. Niall nosed along her jaw until Stella opened her eyes to look at him.
âStella Bella,â he murmured, pushing the sticky hair from her forehead. âWe have so much to learn from each other.â
That sentence ricocheted around the room. Stella felt her eyes close again as Niall kissed her, pulling her back in. Stella was eager, so eager for anything and everything Niall had to offer.
But he slowed them down, soft kisses that lacked the heat Stella was begging for. âSlow,â he echoed.
âSlow,â Stella repeated, but instinctively she reached down, fingers toying with the waistband of his sweatpants.
âSlow,â Niall repeated with more emphasis than before. He pushed her fingers away. âStella this will always be about you.â
âIt can be about you too,â Stella argued, looking up at him through her eyelashes.
âNot today,â Niall shook his head, diving down for a gentle kiss. âSome other time. We have so much time, stel.â
So much time, yet Stella was so eager it felt like she was constantly on the edge. She wanted to jump, risk it all, let the waves wash over her but looking in Niallâs eyes made her want to wait. For the first time in a long time, she was beginning to realize that standing on the edge for a while was what she needed.
When Stellaâs lips were bruised and her mind was frenzied, she pulled herself away. Niall insisted that she leave the bed. Stella reasoned it was the only way theyâd make it out alive.
With a coffee in hand, Stella sat down on the couch. She was freshly showered, practically glowing as Eleanor and Veda sat with her, the news on. The place was trashed, bottles and cups everywhere.
âYou have a good night?â Veda asked after a long bout of silence.
âYeah,â Stella answered. âEleanor?â
âYeah,â Eleanor answered. âwhat about you?â
âI hate you both,â Veda replied, shaking her head. âYouâve both got the same look on your faces. We all know whatâs been going on this morning. And what about Veda? Why she woke up hungover on the couch freezing cold.â

Stella didnât know how she convinced her mother to let her do it, but she did. Louisâs mum let him take the car. They picked up Eleanor and then they were off to London.
Stella found it hard to think of anything else but what sheâd do when she saw Niall. Would she cry? Would she kiss him immediately? Stella didnât know. She kept her nerves at bay, thinking of everything she wanted to tell him.
Niall told her itâd be a proper party with his mates from school. She was rather anxious to meet them all. Her thoughts glossed over Nadia, wondering if sheâd be there too.
Veda told her not to worry about that. It was like she could read her mind. âNiallâs in love with you,â Veda stated matter of factly. âThere no other reason why heâd send you a dozen love letters. And you think he looks at anyone but you when youâre in the room? He doesnât. I can say that with confidence after attending many of parties where you two had your eyes glued to each other.â
âThis time will be no different,â Eleanor added helpfully. âIâd just like to say I didnât get any love letters over holiday.â
âHoliday isnât over yet, is it?â Louis declared, affronted. âRemind me to kick Niallâs ass for setting the bar unbelievably high. Iâll never forgive him for that.â
Stella chuckled, shaking her head, âLouis just do better.â
Stella felt relieved at that, though. She let herself relax against the seat, eyes fluttering shut for a moment. Nadia wasnât even a thought in his mind.
This became apparently clear when she laid eyes on Niall after weeks. There was no one but him. Stella collided with him, eyes falling shut as his arms wrapped around her.
âFuckinâ hell,â she heard him whisper in her ear. âStel, how did you get even more beautiful while we were away?â
Stella breathed out a laugh, shaking her head, âI donât think I did.â
âI think ya did,â he murmured, hand smoothing over her hair. âIâd never tell a lie.â
Stella pulled away to get a look at him. She gave him a look, a stern one to tell him to stop playing games. Niall only laughed, shaking his head. âLetâs go inside.â
They followed Niall up the steps to his flat. He opened the door up to a spacious flat that almost left her speechless. She didnât know what she was expecting but it wasnât that.
âYouâre wealthy,â Louis stated, quite plainly.
âLouis,â Veda scolded.
Niall chuckled, nodding, âMy mam is,â he corrected. âAnd she works hard for it.â
He showed everyone where they could sleep. Louis and Eleanor in the guest room, Niall and Stella in his room and that left Veda the couch. She was begrudging about it, complaining that surely some other drunken person would get it before she would.
âWorst comes to worse we pull out the cot and put you in mine,â Niall chuckled. âItâs a comfy couch, Veda. I think youâre the luckiest one.â
âWell howâs about you take the couch and Stel and I will take your room,â Veda suggested, a sugary smile.
âLeave it up to Stella,â Niall suggested with a shrug. He was much too confident for his own good.
âOkay, Stella,â Veda laughed, arms crossing over her chest. âWhoâll it be?â
âIâm afraid Iâm going to pick my boyfriend,â Stella laughed, shaking her head as she sat down on the couch. She had to admit the couch was comfortable. But Stella thought sheâd probably sleep on rocks if it meant sheâd be next to Niall.
âWanker,â Veda muttered to no one in particular.
âSo when does this party start?â Louis asked, pointedly ignoring Veda.
âNot till late,â Niall answered, sitting down beside Stella, arm draping over her shoulder. âBut we can hang out. See some sights if you want. You guys ever been here?â
âI have,â Eleanor answered all too quickly. âBut Louis hasnât.â
âI havenât either,â Veda echoed.
âI have,â Stella supplied. âWhen I was younger.â
âI can take you guys to see the eye,â Niall offered. âAnd ice skating. Thereâs loads to do.â
And so it was decided. Niall took them on a tour of London, his favorite spots, where he hung out in primary and all of the best places to hang out. They saw the eye. Louis and Eleanor rode it, Veda was too scared and Stella got motion sick.
They ended ice skating. Stella was breathless and achy. Sheâd fallen more times than she could count and Niall helped her up with a laugh, time after time.
Stella thought spending the holidays in London would be fun. Better than a Doncaster Christmas where there was always a missing plate at the table and smiled that sometimes didnât quite reach the eyes.
But this, ice skating and falling and laughing with her best friends was fun. And Stella didnât think any thoughts that made her chest ache. The only thing she could feel was Niallâs hand keeping hers warm and the way his cold nose pressed against her cheek as he laughed. That was happiness that she wished she could bottle and keep forever.
Stella collapsed on Niallâs bed, eyes fluttering shut. Everyone had gone to get ready for the party but she was exhausted. She felt Niall settle beside her, echoing a sigh, âya have fun?â
âLoads,â Stella answered, opening her eyes. âThe most fun Iâve ever had.â
âIâm glad,â Niall mused, lips spreading into a smile. âHey look at me.â
Stella rolled over on her side to look at him. Niall slid his hand over her hip, pulling her close until their bodies collided. Stella closed her eyes, knowing what was coming next. Niall kissed her soft and sweet.
A bold move, Stella draped her leg over Nialls hip pressing herself against him. The contact made Niall breathe a laugh against her lips. âStel,â he murmured.
âI missed you,â she mumbled back.
âI missed you too,â he urged, pushing his fingers through her hair. âSo much.â
âWanna keep kissing,â Stella murmured just before kissing him again, almost urgently.
And who was Niall to deny her? He kissed her back urgently, sliding his hand up her thigh. Stella groaned against his lips, wanting more. Niallâs lips on her neck and Stella couldnât think straight, eyes slipping shut.
For a moment, she thought if this is how it happened. If the first time she had sex with Niall would be in his London bedroom right before his primary friends came over. That thought pulled Stella from it. She let out a breath, pulling away.
Niall caught his breath, running his hand through his hair, âfuck, Stella.â
âSlow,â she murmured, rolling onto her back.
âWe should get ready,â he said.
âI agree,â Stella agreed, though she didnât move.
Niall didnât either, letting out a sigh. Finally he said, âyou want to have sex?â
âUm,â Stella chuckled. âYeah. Do you?â
âFuck yeah,â he breathed out, scrubbing his hand over his face. âNot tonight.â
âNot tonight,â she agreed. âToo much to drink.â
âExactly,â he echoed.
âBut eventually,â Stella concluded. âWe will eventually.â
âWe will,â he agreed. âIf you think youâre ready. Louis told me about Conner and-â
âLouis told you about Conner?â Stella cut him off, sitting up. She didnât know why it made her angry but it did, heart beginning to race.
âHe just mentioned it,â Niall backtracked, sitting up.
âThat wasnât his thing to mention,â Stella snapped, running her hands through her hair.
âBut you never mentioned it,â Niall argued. âIâve been open and honest about everything with Nadia and-and itâs like youâve never so much as mentioned his name. Fuck, I hardly knew you had an ex until Louis mentioned it.â
âYou couldâve asked me,â Stella argued, eyebrows furrowing. âWhat so you and Louis just sit around talking about my exes, then? When Iâm not even there to defend myself?â
âDefend yourself- Stella that isnât what it was. This wasnât some malicious conversation where I demanded that Louis tell me everything about you and Conner. He just mentioned something about someone named Conner and I asked who it was so he told me.â
âWhat did he tell you?â
âThat Conner was your ex and it didnât end well,â Niall shrugged.
âAnd why would you get the impression that itâd affect my wanting to have sex with you?â Stella snapped, feeling angry all over again.
âI donât know!â Niall exclaimed, exasperated. âI donât know, stel. Fuck, I guess it was just really shitty of me to care about your feelings, to-to respect you. Trust me, itâll never happen again.â
Stella remained quiet, thinking the situation over. So maybe Conner was a sore spot. She didnât like to talk about it. Because whoâd want to talk about the person she slept with on and off for a year who was so embarrassed of her that he wouldnât tell anyone. And that wouldnât have been so bad if he hadnât humiliated her at school nearly every day because of it.
Stella reasoned that she had a right to be angry. She had the right to be angry for as long as she wanted to. So Stella let out a breath, shaking her head, âIâm going to get ready.â
âStella,â Niall sighed, hoping sheâd stop. That sheâd turn around and change her mind.
But Stella grabbed her bag, disappearing from his room. She didnât get ready, she found Veda in the guest room getting ready with Eleanor and she closed the door behind her, letting out a viscous groan.
âUh oh,â Veda mumbled, meeting her eyes through the mirror. âWhat happened?â
âLouis told Niall about Conner,â Stella murmured. Â
âUh oh,â Veda repeated, turning around to look at her. âA really big uh oh. Everything okay?â
âI donât want to talk about it,â Stella answered, dropping her bag on the bed. âI just want to get ready for this stupid party. And before anyone asks, yes the probability of his ex girlfriend attending this party are really fucking high.â
âItâs all going to be okay,â Veda assured her. âAnd itâs not all as bad as it seems, you know. Niall cares about you. Whatever happened, youâll get through it.â
Stella tried to repeat that in her mind as she got ready. Theyâd get through it. She knew they would. Stella just wanted to be mad for a while.
It was harder to stay mad than Stella originally thought. She went for a drink in the kitchen and Niall was there, watching her solemnly as if heâd wounded her. In some ways he may have.
âHey,â Stella said, pouring some vodka into a cup. âDo you have any juice?â
âIn the fridge,â Niall answered without reluctance. âCan this fight be over now?â
âNo,â Stella answered, back to him as she opened the fridge. âBecause we didnât even talk about Conner.â
âI got the impression that you didnât want to talk about Conner,â Niall muttered, rubbing his forehead.
âI donât,â Stella emphasized, pouring the juice into her cup. âBut if you want to know about him Iâll tell you.â
âI donât want you to-â Niall cut off as Louis walked in the room. His eyes met Stellaâs, watching as she looked away.
âHey,â Louis said. As an afterthought, he added, âam I interrupting?â
âNo,â Stella answered, lifting her head to look at him. âJust grabbing a drink.â
âFeels tense,â Louis commented, leaning against the counter.
âMust be your imagination,â Stella replied, a hint of annoyance to her voice. She spared Niall a glance as headed for the door.
âStella wait,â Niall sighed, two steps behind her.
âNiall,â Stella sighed out, rubbing her forehead as she continued walking. âFirst you want me to talk about it and then I said fine Iâll talk and then suddenly you donât want to know.â
âI donât want to know like this,â Niall explained, closing his bedroom door behind them. âI want you to feel comfortable enough to tell me on your own not- fuck I donât know.â
âItâs not that I donât feel comfortable itâs just...â Stella trailed off, sitting down on his bed. She set her cup down, shaking her head, âIt didnât seem important.â
âA year long relationship seems kind of important to me.â
âDoes it?â Stella questioned, head tilting to the side. âBecause for a whole entire year I hated myself for all the ways I made myself small for him. And that isnât important Iâm not- I donât want to be that person- Iâm not that person.â
âThat is a part of you, though,â Niall supplied, sitting down beside her.
âIt is,â Stella agreed. âBut I donât want you to think of me as that person.â
âI donât,â Niall urged.
âBut it seems like you do,â Stella argued. âYou implied that because of Conner, for some reason, Â I wouldnât want to have sex with you.â
âI guess maybe I meant that,â Niall conceded. âBecause I just donât know anything. Thereâs lots of blanks, I guess. Iâm trying to be respectful. I donât want to do these things wrong.â
âYou couldnât do them wrong,â Stella assured him. âI donât even know what Iâm doing. You do.â
âI donât,â Niall chuckled.
âSo neither of us knows what weâre doing,â Stella muttered. âThatâs great.â
âWeâll figure it out,â Niall laughed, wrapping his arm around her waist.
And Stella knew they would. Or maybe they would never figure it out. She kissed him softly, her most purest form of apology. Niall kissed her back, sliding his hand over her denim clad thigh and all was forgiven.

The first letter that showed up in Stellaâs mailbox came as a surprise. It made Stella stop in her tracks, the ice cold air cutting through her pajama pants. It sent a chill down her spine that pulled her from her thoughts, gripping the envelope in her hand.
The scribbled Niall Horan and his address, all the way from London was enough to melt Stella from the inside out.
Stella sat down on her bed, cold fingers ripping the envelope. Her eyes glanced over the letter, quick and fleeting. Her lips, unable to help themselves, spread into a smile.
December 13
Dear Stella,
I saw you yesterday but I miss you. And by the time you get this, it will be days since we saw each other. That means that Iâll miss you even more than I did when I wrote this. Think about that, stel. Now thereâs only 26 days until we see each other again. Maybe sooner if you play your cards right.
- Niall
Stella called him, hoping to play her cards the most right she possibly could. She collapsed on her bed, waiting for Niallâs smiling face to greet her.
He did just the way she expected, disheveled hair and flushed cheeks like heâd ran a marathon. âStella Stella,â he said, eyes glancing down. âTo what do I owe the pleasure of seeing your pretty face?â
âI got your letter,â Stella told him, an achy smile on her face.
âOh yeah?â He asked, meeting her eyes. He has a glint in them that she could see even through the grainy camera. âWhich one?â
And thus began the never ending number of letters that showed up in her mailbox. It was enough to make Stella want to burst at the seams. Each letter was returned with a FaceTime where all Niall could do was grin at her loss of words.
âI said Iâd write you love letters,â Niall chided, all knowingly.
âYou were high when you said that,â Stella emphasized, eyebrows raising. âAnd I didnât think you remembered.â
âOf course I remembered,â Niall chuckled. âI say what I mean.â
âI know,â Stella murmured, rolling her bottom lip between her fingers.
Stella tried to think of all the ways she could get him back. Nothing compared to a love letter, so she wrote him one. A long one where she told him just how much she was missing him and his smile and his touch and his laugh- and his jumpers.
By the time Niall got it, it was Christmas Eve and Stella was delightfully tipsy, on a high after spending so much time with Ludo. A figurative high, of course.
Niallâs call came well after midnight when all their guests had left. Stella was still in her nice dress, eyes a bit blurry but she pulled herself away from the lively conversation she was having with Ludo and her mother in the living room.
Stella answered as she closed her bedroom door behind her. Niall was there again, hair disheveled again and she could see the plaid of his dress shirt. âNiall,â she said.
âHappy Christmas, lover,â he murmured, lips spreading into a smile. âI got your letter. I loved it.â
Stella tried not to think about how that was the first time heâs ever called her anything but Stella. Sheâd never imagined herself as a lover. Maybe a love. But if Niall thought she could be a lover, maybe she could.
She felt so far away from him. Maybe it was the alcohol in her that made her eyes sting, looking at him. He was talking about his night, how dinner with his mum and her boyfriend was fun and not at all dreadful the way he thought it was.
Stella didnât realize she was crying until Niall asked, âwhatâs wrong?â
Stella wiped at her eyes carelessly not worrying that sheâd smudge her makeup. âI think Iâm drunk.â
âI think you are too,â Niall mused. âAnything wrong, though?â
âJust miss you,â she shook her head. As an afterthought, she added, âloads.â
âMiss you too,â Niall murmured, chuckling. Â âBut you had a nice night?â
âMm,â Stella hummed a whole new wave of emotions rushing through her. She had fun. Drank. Laughed. Ate. There was nothing to complain about. âNo complaints,â she said.
âIâm sure you have some.â
âI do,â she agreed. âJust donât want to say them out loud.â
âDo you have New Years plans?â Niall asked after a moment, voice soft. Â
âJust with Louis and Veda. Maybe Eleanor too. Sheâs in Leeds right now.â
âI know itâs a few days away but...â Niall trailed off, letting out a soft breath. âMy mam is heading to New York. Her boyfriend- Will- thatâs his name. Will has a flat there. Theyâre spending New Years there.â
âHm,â Stella hummed. âWhat are you doing?â
âDunno,â Niall chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.
Stella knew he was nervous, had something on his mind that he was working up the nerve to say. Stella laughed, âNiall just say it.â
âYou guys wanna spend the new year in London?â Niall asked with a chuckle. âI dunno is it rude to ask you to come out. Like come see me, you know?â
âItâs not rude,â Stella shook her head, rolling into her side. âIâll ask them. Iâll be there, though. For sure.â
âFor sure?â Niall asked, eyes lighting up at that.
âFor sure,â Stella confirmed with a smile. âWouldnât miss an opportunity to kiss you.â
âMm fuck,â Niall chuckled, running his fingers through his hair, disheveling it even more. âIâm glad. Really glad you said that. I canât wait.â
Stella couldnât either. She let out a sigh, trying to memorize his tired face, his happy tired face that she couldnât wait to see. Until then, sheâd settle for love letters and FaceTime calls.

âI hate him,â Veda said, the indifference in her voice was confusing.
Stella looked up from her phone, pointedly ignoring Niallâs âwhere are youâ texts. There was a party going on and Veda didnât want to participate. She didnât want to do anything apparently except pout.
Stella tried to connect the dots of what went down with Zayn but she couldnât. Veda refused to fill in the blanks. She didnât want Stella to understand
And that was fine, Stella reasoned. Except it was Saturday night, theyâd be in Doncaster this time tomorrow. Stella could feel her time with Niall slipping between her fingertips.
âNo one said that you couldnât come,â Stella emphasized. In Stellaâs mind, she was imagining pulling Niall into the bathroom to kiss him just for a while. Or convincing him to leave with her.
âI donât want to go,â Veda responded, eyes drifting up from her phone to look at the tv. The tv which was playing Christmas movies already and was annoying Stella terribly.
Stella wouldnât go without her. Veda knew this. Neither one of them acknowledged that. Stella rolled her bottom lip between her fingers, impatiently looking between the crooked clock on the wall and the tv.
âGo if you want to,â Veda finally said.
âI wonât go without you,â Stella answered almost automatically.
âBut youâre dying to see your wonderful boyfriend,â Veda added tactfully. âStel, just go.â
âI donât want to go to Zaynâs,â Stella urged as her phone began to vibrate in her sweatshirt pocket. She pulled it out to confirm her suspicions. It was Niall. His name in all caps and a picture of them. A selfie they took weeks ago before they were officially together.
âAnswer it,â Veda laughed, shaking her head. âI donât know why this is so hard for you. Choose him, Stella.â
Stella answered it, sliding out of bed. He answered as soon as her feet hit the floor, âStella Bella,â he said.
âNiall,â she answered, already halfway to the door.
âWhatâs going on?â He asked.
âVeda doesnât want to come,â Stella told him, voice soft as she leaned against the wall in the hallway outside of their room.
âI figured she wouldnât,â Niall responded equally as soft. âThatâs why Iâm in my room waiting for you to come up because I have a bottle of rum and Chinese takeaway.â
Stella breathed out a laugh, scrubbing her hand over her face, âokay, okay.â
âAnd bring all of those jumpers youâve stlen from me,â Niall added as an after thought.
âIâll bring most of them,â Stella reasoned because she owned his eagles jumper even if he didnât know it.
âFair play,â Niall mused. âSee you soon, love.â
Stella carried herself back into her room, phone clutched in her hand. She felt like she was giving Veda bad news. It wasnât but it felt like it was.
âIâm going to hang out with Niall,â Stella said, opening her closer door. âAre you sure youâre okay?â
âIâm fine,â Veda emphasized. âAre you sure youâre okay?â
âYes,â Stella chuckled, pulling out the jumpers she promised sheâd return. âWeâre just hanging out in his room. Not at Zaynâs.â
âItâd be okay if you were going to Zaynâs,â Veda added all too matter of factly. Â
âVeda,â Stella sighed, âI pick you in whatever this mess is. Iâm on your side.â
âThere are no sides itâs just-â
âThere are sides,â Stella cut her off as she draped her pile of jumpers over her arm. âAnd Iâm on yours.â
âOkay,â Veda conceded. âAre you having sex tonight.â
âNiall says no,â Stella responded, pocketing her phone. âBut I might not be back tonight. Or in the morning.â
âIâll revel in my last bit of silence until I go back to the madhouse,â Veda mused. âAnd have fun. Good wholesome Stella Bella Grace fun that her mother would approve of.â
âNoted,â Stella laughed, shaking her head. âIâll see you later.â
âLaters,â Veda answered, turning the television up.
Stella took the elevator up to Niallâs room, feelings relieved. When he opened the door, Stella was even more relieved. At ease, maybe. The worry left her mind.
âItâs about time,â Niall sang, letting her in. âAnd this isnât all of the jumpers. Whereâs the eagles one?â
âOh I donât have that one,â Stella shook her head as he took them from her.
âYes you most certainly do,â he laughed but had absolutely no intentions of actually getting it back.
Stella sat down on the futon, feet on the table. Niall was beside her within the second, handing her a container of takeaway. âDid you really think weâd spend our last night together at a stupid party?â
âLou and El didnât go either,â Niall added offhandedly. âWe didnât go, and neither did Veda. Thatâs almost none of his friends.â
âWow,â Stella mumbled. âSides have been picked.â
âItâs just like,â Niall shook his head. âVeda came to him open and honest and he was a dick talking about how he just wanted to fuck around. Heâs been fucking around on her and everything too. So yeah, sides have been picked.â
âIâm sure Veda would be displeased to hear that,â Stella mused, thinking about the way she urged her to go to that party.
âIâm sure she would too,â Niall chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.
Nothing came easy to Veda. Theyâd been friends long enough for Stella to know that. Sheâs worked so hard to get here and thatâs the worst part. Stella thought she deserved the world. Instead sheâd been given less than over and over again to the point where itâs what she thought she deserved.
Maybe Niall knew that, or maybe he didnât. Either way, he was kind. Stella saw his kindness every day. It was buying her dinner or lending her a jumper or looking out for her friends.
âThanks for everything,â Stella said after a long moment of silence. It just didnât seem like enough.
âYouâre welcome, Stel,â Niall smiled right before he took a bite of his food.
And it hit her again that they were spending so much time apart. The feeling ached inside of her as she watched Niall eat. He gave her a look of confusion, eyebrows furrowing. âNiall,â she said. âWeâre leaving tomorrow.â
âTomorrow evening,â he corrected. âAnd itâs not for good. You can worry after you leave.â
Stella only stopped worrying when Niall made her. He took the takeaway from her hands, setting it on the table. Stella groaned out a laugh as he draped her legs over his lap.
âStella let me teach you about stoicism,â Niall told her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
âNiall I know about stoicism,â Stella urged, amused. âWe take the same philosophy class on different days.â
âSo believe in it, then,â Niall laughed. âDonât worry about things you canât change.â
âThereâs more to stoicism than that,â Stella groaned but she was so close to Niall that she didnât care about stoicism. She didnât care about any of the philosophers they talked about, just his fingers brushing against the skin of her belly.
âTell me about the holidays,â Niall finally asked, settling his hand on her thigh. Warm hands spread over the denim of her jeans. The heat of his palm made Stellaâs eyelashes fluttering.
âWe go to my Granâs,â Stella told him, finding the words. âA big dinner. Church before. Cousins and aunts and uncles and-â Stella cut off.
âWhat is it?â Niall asked. Â
âThe holidays are weird. Have been since I was little.â
Niall hummed, nodding, âbecause of your dad?â
âYeah,â Stella breathed. âBut we make it as fun as it can be. Lots of alcohol. And food. And Ludo spends the whole day with us.â
âThatâs nice,â Niall smiled.
âWhat about you?â Stella asked, shifting the attention from herself.
âUsually I go back to Ireland,â Niall told her. âJust for the holidays but Mam- I dunno. Doesnât want to go back. Said we can have our own little Christmas in the city.â
âJust you and her?â Stella asked, eyebrows furrowing.
âAnd her boyfriend,â Niall added with a shrug. âTheir first Christmas together. Itâs a big deal, I think.â
âWell thatâll be nice,â Stella supplied in what she hoped was helpful.
âYeah,â Niall agreed, chuckling. âGuess both our families are...â
âYeah,â Stella murmured in agreement. âThey are.â
âGonna miss your face,â Niall murmured, fingertips sliding up her side, teasing.
Stella wasnât sure what he was playing at. The no sex because everyoneâs leaving for a month and then followed by the look on his eyes. Like he knew something she didnât. Itâs possible Niall knew lots of things Stella didnât. In this moment, she felt like she knew nothing.
Unable to help herself, Stella asked, âare you going to see Nadia when you go home?â
âMaybe,â Niall nodded, palm flattening against her back. âBut thatâs only because we have the same friends. Does that worry you?â
âUm maybe,â Stella admitted.
âThatâs understandable,â Niall nodded. âI think Iâd be worried if I knew you were going to see your ex.â
âSo Iâll just be worried,â Stella concluded.
âLetâs think about my track record, shall we?â Niall asked, amused. âWho was the one that kissed your arch enemy and then told you the next morning?â
Stella rolled her eyes, âyou.â
âExactly,â he laughed.
âBut that just means that if you kiss Nadia, youâll call me and tell me the next morning,â Stella argued.
âOh Stella,â Niall breathed out. âOne day youâll realize just how into you I am. Until then, I will promise that nothing will happen. In no universe would anything ever happen with her.â
âOkay,â Stella agreed, turning her head to look up at him. âKiss me?â
Niall breathed out a laugh, nodding. He caught Stella in a soft kiss, a teasing kiss that had her leaning up for more. Niall slid his hand over the curve of her bum and Stella found the confidence to take control. Legs on either side of his, perched in his lap.
Stella was always left wanting more. No matter how many times Niall kissed her, how many times she had to come up for air, Stella was begging for more. It was a desire that pooled in her belly and if she closed her eyes long enough, itâd spread to a tingle in her fingertips as they tangled in his hair.
With Niallâs lips on her neck, Stella couldnât help the soft moan that left her lips. Niallâs lips spread into a smile against her neck before he pulled away, griping her hips tightly. âYouâre making this hard, you know. Going slow.â
âYou wanted to go slow,â Stella emphasized. She could feel how hot she was and hoped her flush didnât give that away.
âThis is true,â Niall mused with a gentle nod. âJust trying to do things differently. Not sure how to go about this.â
âDo whatever feels right,â Stella murmured, sitting until her knees bumped his elbows.
âWe should wait,â Niall decided. âDistance makes the heart grow fonder. And all that.â
âRight,â Stella smiled, fingers brushing over his pink cheeks. âThen youâd better stop kissing my neck like that.â
âFair play,â Niall chuckled. âAnd if I stop, you wonât moan. Itâs a win-win.â
âExactly,â Stella agreed though she could tell by the way Niallâs eyes drifted that he wanted to play games. He wanted to wind her up just to see how far theyâd go without actually going.
Stella was okay with that, she reasoned as his fingers drifted beneath her t-shirt, teasing at the lace of her bra. Stella tilted her head to the side, eyeing him in a way that made him laugh. In turn, Stella laughed too just in time for Niall to kiss her again, sloppy and clumsy.
And Niallâs fingers dug into her side to make her laugh even more until Stella hauled herself off of his lap and away from his prodding fingers. âYouâre the worst,â Stella groaned, nudging him with her foot.
âIn which worst means the best,â Niall corrected, pulling her closer. âWeâre leaving and you keep putting space between us, Stel. Thatâs just not right.â
âSorry,â Stella grunted as she collided with him. âI was being tickled. Rather aggressively, I might add.â
âWeird,â he commented, running his fingers through her hair. âDonât know anything about that.â
âOf course you donât,â she agreed, a knowing smile on her lips.
âSo,â Niall sighed. âI guess I should ask. Will you be seeing any of your exes at home.â
âErm no,â Stella shook her head. âThe odds are slim.â
âWell if you see them tell them that your boyfriend said hi,â he emphasized, squeezing her thigh. Stella laughed, unable to help herself because she was ticklish and Niall was the funniest person sheâd ever met. That was a stretch but she believed it wholeheartedly.
âSay youâll tell them,â Niall urged.
âIâll tell them,â Stella groaned out, pushing his hand away from her thigh. âYouâre making it hard to be close to you, ya know that?â
âI like hearing you laugh,â Niall answered, in all seriousness.
Stella had to kiss him again, soft and sweet. A thank you without words to show him how much he meant to her. It wasnât much, Stella thought, but she hoped he knew.
Stella thought about how many miles away theyâd be and a simple kiss just wouldnât be feasible. How sheâd have to be honest with her feelings while theyâre away. Honest about missing him, and what it means to miss him.
Niall gave her his grin, eyes shining and Stella had a worry of what those feelings would mean. She wasnât ready to be honest just yet.
Stella kissed him again, pushing those worry thoughts from her mind. Niall tugged on her bottom lip with his teeth and Stella had to moan again. Niall scolded her with a look, pulling away abruptly. The no moaning game was a hard one, all things considered.
âStella Bella,â Niall sighed out, nose nudging against hers. âCut it out. Youâre driving me mad.â

There were only two things that got Stella through finals. It was the silence of her room and the biggest cups of coffee of her life. Stella banished Niall from any place that she was. That meant that she didnât want to run into him at the library, at the dining hall, or most importantly, see him in her room.
So the eight days that Stella confined herself, she thought more clearly than she probably had all semester. That was something, Stella thought as she left her last final. Sheâd come to the conclusion that she hated thinking clearly. She hated being aware of things that didnât concern Niall.
Stella was stopped in her tracks when she saw Niall, a grin on his face and two coffees in his hand. Stella laughed, adjusting her book bag on her shoulders, âNiall,â she drawled out.
âStella,â he sang, closing the distance between them.
He handed her coffee off just in time to catch her lips in a painfully chaste kiss. He smiled down at her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, âhowâd it go?â
âPretty good, I think,â Stella shrugged. âI may have bombed that awful Shakespeare part but I knew everything else.â
âWell youâre an absolute genius,â Niall told her as they began to walk toward the dining hall. âI have no doubt that you aced it.â
âYou have high expectations for me,â Stella mused, looking over at him.
âWell you have higher expectations for yourself,â he chuckled. âWhy else would you have ignored your boyfriend for a whole entire week.â
âIt was eight days- not that that makes it better,â Stella chuckled, sliding her hand into his. âAnd I said Iâd make it up to you, didnât I?â
âYou did,â Niall nodded, looking up at her. âAnd how do you plan on doing that?â
âI donât know,â Stella laughed, shrugging. âMaybe we could get high and snog.â
âThat sounds absolutely incredible,â Niall laughed, stopping her before they could go inside. He pulled Stella in for a kiss that was less than chaste.
Usually public displays of affection made Stella want to crawl out of her skin but when Niallâs hand wrapped around her waist, she couldnât think about anything else.
âGet a room,â a voice called from behind them.
Stella didnât have to look to know it was Veda. When she looked, though, she saw Louis and Eleanor and Veda. It made Stella roll her eyes.
âFinals went well, then?â Louis asked, falling in step with them just as they walked through the doors.
âHopefully,â Stella shrugged. âYou?â
âSlept through communications, might have failed psych. Stel, I just donât know,â Louis laughed, shaking his head. âWeâll see.â
âBloody hell,â Stella muttered. âLouis, you have to do better.â
âI know,â he emphasized, looking back at Eleanor. Stella watched them share a look, âI know I do. I will. Next semester. I promise.â
Stella couldnât help but feel as though everything was about to change drastically. She was set to go home in two days and there was nothing she wanted less than that.
More importantly, she was worried for Niall to go back to London. Heâd admitted the ways he wasnât at his best there. His friends, mostly. And Nadia. She couldnât help but wonder what happens when he goes home.
Niall caught Stellaâs gaze, though, and he smiled like heâd never hurt her. Those smiles were most dangerous, Stella knew. Niall was none of the boys sheâs dated before but somehow they all had the same glint in their eyes.
âStella did you hear me?â Veda urged, pulling her from her thoughts. âYou never listen to anything but the thoughts in your head.â
âThatâs so true,â Louis laughed.
âI have to agree,â Niall nodded.
âFuck off,â Stella laughed, shifting in her chair. âWhat is it that you want, Veda?â
âI asked if I could ride home with you on Sunday,â Veda repeated. âMy mum canât get off.â
âOf course,â Stella nodded. âMum would love to see you. Missed you the last time, you know.â
âYeah I know,â Veda chuckled. âYou goin to Zaynâs tonight?â
âI donât know,â Stella shrugged. âI think Niall and I have plans.â
âLou?â
âI think we have plans too,â Louis shrugged, looking apologetic.
âFuck,â Veda grunted, rubbing her forehead. âYou know Iâm just- weâre just going to talk,â she decided, shouldering her bag. âIâm done playing these stupid fucking games.â
Stella watched Veda leave, a determination in her pace that was hard to ignore. Louis shared a look with Stella and she shrugged, holding her hands up, âI have no idea what thatâs about.â
âLast I heard Zayn was fucking around with other girls,â Eleanor supplied, very helpfully at that.
âYeah I heard that too,â Niall nodded. âLast weekend I think. They had a big fight at the party.â
âWell Zaynâs got whatâs cominâ to him, then,â Stella concluded, setting her fork down. âWhy havenât you guys talked some sense into him yet?â
âItâs a bit more complicated than that,â Louis chuckled, scratching the back of his head.
âZayn just doesnât like monogamy,â Niall explained, leaning forward. âAnd you know you donât just become a monogamist overnight.â
âWell I mean...â Eleanor trailed off. âLouis, that doesnât happen does it?â
âIt does when youâre given ultimatums,â Louis laughed, shaking his head.
Stella tried to find the amusement in that, but she couldnât. She hated ultimatums. They never ended well and sometimes racked up a number of resentments that wouldnât go away.
And then Stella met Niallâs eyes and she hoped he knew that she hated ultimatums. Niall smiled, shaking his head in a way that made Stella think he knew exactly what she was thinking.
As Niall and Stella walked back to the dormitory, Stella told him, âI hate ultimatums.â
âI know,â Niall chuckled, sliding his hand into hers. âIâd expect you wouldnât respond well to an ultimatum yourself and youâve always followed the golden rule.â
âSome people like them,â Stella added. Louis was the kind of person that needed them and everyone knew that including Eleanor.
âLouis is going to Zaynâs tonight,â Niall told her. âWant to spend the night?â
âSure,â Stella responded, looking up at him. She waited for Niall to make some sort of joke about sex but he didnât and thatâs where Stella felt like she should worry. âAre we....â
âAre we what?â Niall asked, seemingly oblivious. He picked the best moments to be unaware of the thoughts going on in her head.
âNever mind,â Stella shook her head, not as brave as she once was. âDo you have anything to smoke?â
âI think so,â Niall nodded.
Stella knew the days after smoking sheâd feel restless and unsettled but itâs possible she wouldnât this time. When she was with Niall she felt at ease.
This time was no different. Stella collapsed on Niallâs bed beside him, breathless feeling like she could float away. âFuck,â Niall breathed out, rubbing his eyes.
âYou know,â Stella said, âthree weeks is a long time to be apart.â
âIt is,â Niall agreed.
âWhat are we gonna do?â Stella asked, rubbing her forehead. It has come to realization that eight days without Niall was a lot. And 21 days without him was even more.
Niall breathed out a laugh, shaking his head, âfuck if I know, stel. FaceTime? Phone calls? Love letters?â
âLove letters? Niall be serious,â Stella muttered, rolling over to face him. âWonât you miss me?â
âOf course Iâll miss you,â Niall urged, rolling over to look at her. âLike mad. Iâll miss you every second of every day. Iâll write you love letters every day.â
âNiall,â she drawled out, sighing.
âStella,â he mimicked, pulling her closer by the hips. He pressed a chaste kiss to her lips. âDonât worry.â
Stella tried not to worry but he was just better at it than she was. Stella thought of them as complimentary skills that they shared. Niall didnât worry while Stella worried a lot.
Niall kissed her again and again and she felt her worries slip away. The only thing Stella could think about was the way it felt to be with him in this way. Tangled limbs and teasing touches where Stella found it hard to breathe.
Niallâs lips on her neck and Stella felt like sheâd risk it all right here. Sheâd close her eyes and let him take control. Niall had more sense than she did, though. He found his way back to her lips where he pressed a soft kiss.
âNiall,â Stella found herself whispering. âDo you ever think about it?â
âThink about what?â He asked in his kind way, a soft question.
âYou know...â Stella trailed off. âSex.â
âOf course,â Niall laughed, knee bumping against hers. âBut I reckon this isnât a great time. I can tell youâre far away and holiday is coming up.â
Stella didnât respond because she was feeling far away. Maybe too far away after asking that question. She let her eyes slip shut as Niallâs fingers brushed the hair from her face.
Itâs possible this night was a grave mistake but the brush of his fingertips against her cheek made her want to believe different. It made her want to curl into his side and make a home for herself because it was cold outside and Niall had ways to warm her from the inside out.

Itâs cold but it reminds Stella of when she was younger playing outside with Ludo. Their mother watched from the kitchen window because sometimes Ludo forgot how much older and bigger he was than Stella. That was something Stella also didnât realize.
Their mother would have hot chocolate waiting for them and some sort of baked good. Later, Stella realized that baked goods only came if mum was really stressed. Or sad. Baked goods came a lot after dad passed away. But Stella would never complain about a homemade chocolate chip cookie.
For a moment, Stella thought about bringing Niall home. Letting him meet Ludo if she could manage to track him down for longer than ten minutes. And sheâd let her mother embarrass her with stories of a younger Stella that felt like a lifetime ago. All of that felt like a dream that Stella didnât have the courage to conjure up.
Because after all this time, Stella had been looking for a label between them. Louis was right, she liked to define everything. She liked to have all the answers to the worlds toughest questions, starting with, what are we?
November was hinting like maybe it would steal the bitterness from December. Stella knew this because her cheeks burned from the wind and she couldnât get over the way it felt when Niall picked her up just to get her feet off the ground so he could kick the ball.
It made Stella laugh, the kind that made her lose her balance. She was off kilter, laughing into Niallâs jacket as they fell to the ground. Niallâs own laugh sounded like music to her ears and his arms were tight around her waist.
Stella rolled over, to look at him, eyes absolutely shining. Niallâs cheeks were equally as pink, maybe even darker. Stella pressed a kiss to his ice cold lips with tongue. It was the kind that got Niall to lose all the thoughts in his mind.
Stella was better than that, though. She knew better. She pulled herself from Niall, jumping to her feet to get the discarded ball. Niall let out a boisterous laugh at her cheap trick. He was right behind her though, not willing to go down without a fight.
They were friends, Stella let herself remember when they finally called it quits. It was a tie. They were friends who hung out a lot more than friends usually did. So maybe they were best friends.
Because Stella told Niall about how her father died when she was young and she didnât understand but she knew her mother was never the same. The house was never the same and Ludo was never the same. That was something she never even told Veda. So they were best friends.
Best friends who kissed a lot, who held hands, who stole glances without caring who was watching. Stella thought she liked that better than boyfriend. Every boyfriend sheâd ever had broke her heart in two.
âWhat are you thinking about?â Niall finally asked as they sat on the futon in his room.
âNothing,â Stella shook her head, picking up her cup of coffee. The warmth of the room made Stella feel better. She felt like sheâd finally caught her breath.
âYou sure?â Niall asked, eyebrows furrowing. He could tell more about her than heâd like to admit.
âYeah,â Stella nodded, still not quite meeting his eyes.
âStella,â he murmured, a hand on her thigh.
Stella was gone, looking up at him. Her cheeks warmed all over again. It wasnât a hard conversation to have but Stella felt so full that sheâd burst.
âWhat is it?â He asked, voice soft.
âWeâre friends,â Stella murmured.
âBest friends,â Niall supplied because even he knew that word wasnât quite right for them.
âBest friends,â she echoed. She wouldnât point out how that word was reserved for Louis and Veda almost exclusively. It made her feel like that word wasnât right either.
âIs this what I think it is?â Niall asked, turning to face her. âThe talk.â
âWhat talk?â Stella asked, trying to play pretend. She wondered if she was doing a good job.
âThe what are we talk,â he explained. âThe point where how things have been isnât enough-â
âNo,â Stella had to stop him. âIt has been enough.â
âJust because things have been enough, that doesnât mean you canât ask for more, Stella,â Niall explained in a way that made sense. âYou deserve everything you want.â
âI donât know what more means,â Stella told him. âI just...â she trailed off letting out a sigh. âWeâre best friends but-â
âBut Louis and Veda are your best friends too,â Niall cut her off. âI know,â he laughed. âI saw your face when I said it.â
Stella pursed her lips, letting out a sigh in the way she did when Niall proved his knowledge of her. Niall laughed, shaking his head, âdo you want me to be your boyfriend, then?â
âWell, Stella,â Niall told her, amused. âYouâve been my girlfriend for like two months and you didnât know it.â
âTwo months?â She echoed, almost incredulous. Â
âYeah my friends from home have been asking when they can meet my girlfriend,â Niall told her, as if that was an explanation.
âWell....â Stella trailed off, eyebrows furrowing. âIâve been calling you my friend. To everyone.â
âI know,â Niall emphasized, laughing. âBut we are friends. Best friends, maybe, in different ways than your best friends.â
âWe are friends,â she agreed.
âAnd you donât like the word boyfriend?â Niall asked, trying to connect the dots. Thatâs what Stella always was. A one million connect the dot that even if Niall finished it, it would still be unfinished.
âI donât know,â Stella shrugged, fingers tangling into her cardigan. âItâs just a weird word.â
âIt could be a good word,â Niall suggested. âIf you had a good boyfriend, it could turn until a really good word that youâd want to use a lot.â
âYou want me to call you my boyfriend,â Stella concluded with a laugh.
âYes, Niall chuckled. âMaybe a little.â
Stella let out a sigh, nodding, âfine.â
âFine?â Niall echoed, incredulous. âThatâs all youâve got to say for yourself after calling me your friend to our friends faces and then snogging me the way a girlfriend does?â
âYes thatâs all I have to say,â Stella laughed as he pulled her closer to him. âI donât have to explain myself.â
âMaybe you could text everyone and tell them that Iâm your boyfriend,â he suggested, arm sliding around her waist as he draped her legs over his lap.
âI donât think Iâll do that,â Stella laughed.
âWe could throw a couples party at Zaynâs and go together and then everyone would ask are you guys dating and you would say yes.â
âMaybe not that either,â Stella laughed.
âWe could change our relationship status on Facebook.â
âThats even worse than the party,â Stella mused. Â
âWe could get matching shirts that say something about dating on them.â
âOr,â Stella laughed, âthe next time Veda interrogates me about if weâre dating I just tell her that we are that way thereâs no party and no matching shirts.â
âFine,â Niall decided. âIâll settle just this once.â
Stella let out a laugh, shaking her head, âyou sure know how to get what you want.â
âAlways,â he grinned. âI got you, didnât I?â
Stella didnât want to think of the implications of a sentence like that. What that meant. How that made her feel. Stella kissed him instead, soft and sweet.
âHomework,â Niall reminded her, pushing his fingers through her hair.
There was an essay sheâd been putting off for days. Maybe it was Niallâs fault that she had been. She didnât know. But she kissed him again, this time with a bit more intent than before. Homework could wait. She had a boyfriend now.
Stella had a boyfriend that liked to kiss as much as she did. Hands in his hair, his hands on her hips. Stella felt brave, straddling him. Niall loved her there. He kissed her back eagerly, hands sliding into her back pockets.
Nialls fingers beneath her t-shirt and Stella felt herself beginning to think about more. About his lips on other places besides her lips. About his hands everywhere. The thought made her breathless, pulling away for air. The flush on her cheeks was incriminating, she just knew it.
Niall gave her a smile, thumb brushing over her bottom lip. Stellaâs eyes fluttered and she felt a moan in her throat. This time, she swallowed it with a sigh. âStella Bella,â he murmured. âWhat Iâd give to see what goes on in your mind.â
Niall knew what she was thinking and Stella knew he knew. Her smile was guilty maybe. Or maybe it was just sweet like honey, the same as it always was. Either way, when Stella kissed him again, she let the moan fall from her lips so that maybe heâd be thinking the same things.
âWhen a devil falls in love, itâs the most hauntingly beautiful thing ever. And you should be terrified, for he will go to the depths of hell for her.â
Hey, Iâm really enjoying Niall and Stellaâs story thank you! I canât remember if you mentioned what Niall and Stella are studying at uni? Also do you know how many chapters there is going to be? đ
Iâm so glad youâre enjoying it! Niall is studying history and Stella is studying literature! I donât have a definite stopping point yet. Right now Iâm working on chapter 18 if that gives you an idea of how long itâll be?

Stella felt like she was in slow motion standing a world away from Niall. He was talking to Heather across the room and that was fine. Stella didnât care. All she could think about was how good he looked, how they were leaving together, how whatever it was that they were, they were on the same page about it.Â
Stella was on her third drink which was chartering into dangerous territory. She felt weightless, like she could float away if she held her breath long enough.Â
Veda pulled her from her thoughts, asking, âdid you hear me?âÂ
âNo,â Stella responded, painfully tearing her eyes away from Niall. âSorry.â
âI asked if you think itâs a good idea if I stayed here tonight,â Veda repeated, looking at her expectantly.Â
âOh,â Stella mumbled. âI donât see why it isnât a good idea. You and Zayn love each other.â
âWe donât love each other,â Veda argued a bit too quickly.Â
Stella was checked out, though, eyes back to Niall. He met her eyes, a smile spreading over his lips. The lips that Stella fully intended to kiss like crazy until neither of them could breathe.Â
Niall pushed himself off of the wall, shaking his head. He walked up to Stella, hand curling around her waist as he pulled her towards him, âStella Bella,â he said, an amused lilt to his voice. âAre you staring at me?âÂ
Stella had to laugh, looking up at him. Her eyelids were heavy, already begging for sleep. And a snack. Niall pushed his fingers through her hair, humming softly, âyou wanna get out of here?âÂ
Stella nodded because there was nothing she wanted more. âIâll get our jackets,â Niall told her, pulling herself away from her.Â
âYou two are sickening,â Veda mumbled from beside her.Â
âJust talk to Zayn,â Stella told her as if it was that simple. Veda had given her no information. Sheâd been moping around for weeks.Â
âEasier said than done,â Veda grunted, pushing herself off the wall, âcan I walk back with you guys?âÂ
âOf course,â Stella nodded, âIâll grab your jacket. Meet you by the door.â
Stella went in the direction Niall had gone, pushing past people until she got to the hallway where there was no one to be found. Stella pushed Zaynâs bedroom door open to find Niall rummaging through the pile of jackets on the bed.Â
âFuckin hell,â he muttered, âcanât find anything in here.â
Stella leaned against Zaynâs bed, watching Niall rummage around. âCome on, Niall,â Stella drawled out, crossing her arms over her chest.Â
âStella,â Niall drawled out mimicking her tone as he found their jackets. âAre you drunk?âÂ
âNo,â Stella answered automatically. She was on the border, not quite ready to tip over. Though, after one kiss from him, Stella probably would feel drunk.Â
âSounds like a lie,â he mused, pulling his jacket on.Â
âDo you want to play seven minutes in heaven tonight?â Stella asked him, zipping her jacket up.Â
âWe can play anything you want,â Niall laughed, throwing an arm over her shoulder. He pressed a sloppy kiss to her cheek and Stella laughed, nearly falling over at the weight of him.Â
Niallâs own laugh echoed in her ear and she felt full up to her eyeballs. Niall tilted her chin towards him to press a gentle kiss to her lips. Stella melted against him and Niall hummed, fingers drifting over her jaw.Â
âSo this is whatâs taking so long,â Veda huffed from the doorway.Â
Niall dropped his head to Stellaâs shoulder as he let out a chuckle. Stella had no remorse, eyes holding Vedaâs gaze. Veda gave Stella an amused smile, reaching to take her jacket from Stellaâs grip. âIâll meet you by the door,â she said, echoing Stellaâs earlier sentiment.Â
Zaynâs door slammed shut and Niall lifted his head to look at Stella. Niall couldnât find it in himself to be embarrassed. Stella couldnât either.Â
âLetâs go,â Stella said with a laugh. âGet your hands off of me, will ya?âÂ
âStella Grace,â Niall all but exclaimed. âHow dare you.â
âHow dare you,â she emphasized, peeling herself away from him.Â
âThatâs real nice,â Niall laughed. âYou ask me if I want to play seven minutes in heaven and then itâs my fault we get caught kissing.âÂ
Stella soothed the situation with a firm kiss to his lips. Niall was no longer indignant. He gave Stella a smile when she pulled away. âLetâs go,â she said, an urgency to her voice that Niall couldnât ignore.Â
On the walk home, Veda caught Niall and Stella up on the latest Zayn drama. It was more than Stella thought itâd be. A mess of not wanting to admit feelings and doing things to mask those feelings.Â
By the time they got to their room, Veda was even more grumpy than she was before. Stella peeled her jacket off, tossing it on her desk chair. Niall took his own jacket off, setting it on hers.Â
âYou guys want to watch some tv?â Veda asked, already turning the tv on.Â
âSure,â Stella answered before Niall had a chance to think.Â
Niall concealed his own grumpiness, climbing onto Stellaâs bed. She was right beside him, collapsing beside him. Veda loosened up, laying on her own bed.Â
This, Stella thought, was not how tonight was supposed to end. Niall would agree. Seven minutes in heaven was much more appealing at this given moment considering how loose Stella was feeling. But Veda was Stellaâs very best friend and sheâd do anything for her. It made Stella happy that Niall would do the same.Â
But that didnât stop Stella from pulling the duvet up to her chin. And it didnât stop her from sliding her cold hands under Niallâs jumper in hopes to find a little bit of warmth. Niall let her because there was absolutely nothing he could do about it.Â
The moments between them, Stella had begun to feel more brave. Niall made her feel brave when he took whatever she gave him. Or when he let Stella make up the rules as they went. It was Stellaâs world and he was just living in it.Â
The minutes felt like hours before Veda fell asleep. Stella hardly noticed, her own eyelids getting heavy. Niall wouldnât let her fall asleep, selfish as that was.Â
âHey,â he said, âI think Iâm gonna go to bed,â he told her, barely a whisper.Â
âOkay,â Stella murmured. âCan I walk you up?âÂ
âThereâs nothing Iâd love more,â Niall murmured back, disentangling himself from her.Â
Stella sat up herself, sliding out of bed after him. And the time between now and stepping into Niallâs room felt like forever. Maybe it was that Stella was anxious to get her hands on him. Or the alcohol in her was warping her sense of time. Either way, Stella was grateful when Niall asked, âare you tired? Or do you want to stay for a bit?âÂ
Stella answered that question by leaning up on her tiptoes to press a teasing kiss to his lips. Niall took it in stride, hand sliding to her waist where he settled them until Stella hints for more.Â
And she did eventually, gasping against his lips. Itâs a sound that felt like a bucket of cold water dumped on Niallâs head. Niall dove in for an even more desperate kiss, one that has Stella tugging on the hair on the back of his head.Â
And then Niallâs lips on her neck and Stella has to squeeze her eyes shut. She can feel a moan rising in her throat and while part of her doesnât want to, the other part letâs it happen. She moaned his name, and Niall groaned against her neck.Â
Niallâs the one to pull it away, keenly aware of how much sheâs had to drink. When things happen, he wants her painfully sober to where her cheeks pink just looking at him. While he likes Stella when sheâs brave like this, he thinks of how uneven the playing field is.Â
The air was thick between them. For a moment Niall though Stella was upset that he stopped it. Her eyes meet his and she smiles. All is good, he thinks.Â
âIâm gonna go,â Stella says after a minute. âI think I had a lot to drink,â she admits.Â
Her moan is still ringing in his mind and he has to agree, âI think so too.â
âLetâs get breakfast in the morning,â Stella finally offers, putting space between them. âMaybe we can kick the ball around at Whitworth.âÂ
âSounds like a plan,â Niall says, watching her with an amused smile.Â
âOkay,â Stella laughed. âGoodnight.âÂ
âGoodnight, Stel,â Niall chuckled. âSee you in the morning.âÂ

Stella thought that a weekend away from Niall would have calmed her down. Instead, all of her feelings rushed back in earnest, watching him sit down at the dining hall across from her.Â
âHey,â he said, a smile on his face. âYouâre eating alone?
âNo louis and Veda are...â she trailed off, looking over her shoulder. âTheyâre getting their food.âÂ
âHow was your weekend home?â Niall asked, shrugging his book bag off of his shoulders.Â
âUh it was good,â she chuckled, rubbing her forehead.Â
Aside from the part where they got so high, Stella could have sworn she talked to god. And the throwing up part. And the waking up with the pounding headache, confusion, and immediate regret.Â
âThatâs good,â Niall chuckled  âyou got high didnât you.â
âVery,â Stella nodded, poking at the pasta on her plate. âRegretfully high. Maybe even devastatingly high.â
âCelebrated 19 the right way,â Niall mused.Â
Louis and Veda joined them just a few minutes later. Veda was grumbling about the food they were served and Louis was doing his very best to ignore her.Â
âHowâs come we pay all this money and we canât even get a decent meal,â Veda grumbled.Â
If Stella and her were alone, sheâd press her until she said what was actually the matter. They werenât, though, so she just watched her disgruntled behavior wordlessly hoping that no one would mention it.Â
No one did. Louis exchanged glances with Stella. Niall was oblivious, eating his food as if nothing was wrong. Stella wondered how he couldnât tell, the way Veda was angrily eating her green beans. Or the way she scowled at him. Oblivious. Â
Stella wished she could be oblivious for a day. Instead she was hyper aware of every little thing. Every slight change of voice, eyebrow crinkle. She could notice it all.Â
And then Stella wondered if Niall could tell she was a bit off kilter since sheâd gotten back from Doncaster. Niall did notice, though as they did homework later that night.Â
âAre ya alright?â Niall asked, a lilt to his voice that made Stella want to forget all of the weird feelings she was having.Â
âYeah...â Stella trailed off, propping her knees up on the table. âJust tired, I think.â
âOkay,â Niall answered slowly. âYouâd tell me if something happened at home, wouldnât you?âÂ
Stellaâs instinct was to reassure him, so she did, sitting up. âNothing happened at home,â sheâd said, twirling her pen between her fingers in a way that would surely give her away.Â
âAre you sure because...â he trailed off. âIt feels like youâre upset with me or somethingâÂ
âIâm not upset with you,â Stella assured him, dropping her pen into her lap. She rubbed her forehead, sighing. âI just donât know, Niall.â
âYou donât know what?â Niall asked, eyebrows furrowing as he looked at her.Â
âI just donât know how you can get out of a three year relationship and already start kissing the first uni girl you see,â Stella rushed out, looking up at him.Â
âWhat do you mean?â Niall asked, eyebrows furrowing even more as he thought about what sheâd just said.Â
âIsnât there like a grieving process? Sadness or something,â she emphasized.Â
âThere is,â Niall nodded. âThere is a grieving process when youâve lost something, but Stella,â he chuckled. âI didnât lose anything.âÂ
âYou just feel absolutely nothing for Nadia?â Stella asked, eyebrows raising.Â
âI mean...â he trailed off, shrugging. âNo I donât feel anything. D-do you want me to feel something for her?â
âI mean no,â Stella shook her head. âBut what does that say about you? How quickly you moved on.â
âI donât know,â Niall shook his head. âI donât care what it says about me either. Do you?âÂ
âI donât know,â Stella shrugged.Â
Niall ran his fingers through his hair, letting out a sigh, âStella, donât tell me you think youâre a rebound.â
âI donât think that,â Stella argued petulantly. She sighed. âMaybe a little.âÂ
âRebounds are for people that donât know who the fuck they are or what they want,â Niall answered her, shaking his head. âIs it so hard to believe that I actually really like you?â
Stella didnât answer him. Instead she kept her eyes glued on the book in her lap. A page from Tolstoyâs Anna Karenina. Sheâd reread it ten times and still couldnât think about anything but the nagging feeling she had in her belly.Â
After a moment, Niall asked, âdo you need reassurance?âÂ
It was painful to ask for that, Stella thought, drawing her eyes up at him. She felt like she could cry. She really was tired, exhausted after the weekend she had, exhausted after spending that whole weekend thinking about Niall. She wished he was there with her, getting high with Louis and her, talking to her mother, meeting Ludoâs date. All of it she wished so desperately that heâd been there.Â
âStella,â Niall murmured hand smoothing over her sweatpant clad thigh. âYâknow you actually have to talk to me.âÂ
âI donât know,â Stella finally mumbled, shaking her head.Â
âIs there anything you do know?â Niall asked, voice soft enough to make the knot in her throat slip away.Â
âI wish you came to Doncaster with us,â Stella murmured, winding her fingers into her t-shirt.Â
âI wish that too,â he admitted. âBut there will be other opportunities.âÂ
âWill there?â Stella urged, lifting her head to look at him.Â
âYes,â Niall emphasized with a laugh. He pulled her jittery fingers from her shirt, sliding them into his. âDo you think something bad is gonna happen?âÂ
âMaybe,â Stella mumbled, unable to find the same humor heâd found.Â
âNothing bad will happen as long as I can help it,â Niall told her, brushing his thumb over her knuckles. âAnd sitting here worrying about it is wasting precious time.âÂ
Stella gave him a look like it wasnât the right thing to say. Niall rolled his eyes at her, sighing, âStella, you have to read 200 pages by the morning. Iâd say thatâs precious time being wasted.âÂ
âI donât want to read this anymore,â Stella said, closing the book.Â
âWell what do you want to do?â Niall asked, eyeing her skeptically.
âLook at me, would ya?â Niall asked, frustrated right back.Â
âWhy?â She mumbled, eyes now glued on the cover of the book.Â
âI said look at me,â he repeated sternly, in a voice that made Stella look at him. Eyes wide and sorrowful in a way that only confusion could manage to do. âYou have to cut this out.âÂ
Stella gave him another look because that wasnât the right thing to say either. Niall rolled his eyes at her, tilting her chin up, âI mean it. Cut it out. I didnât do anything,â he urged, searching her eyes. âEverything youâre upset about is in your head. Itâs not real.âÂ
Stella wanted to argue that it was real, except for the first time since sheâd seen Niall, she wanted to kiss him. Like really kiss him, the way he did on her birthday with tongue and teeth and hands that wandered.Â
âSay okay,â Niall commanded when she didnât respond.Â
âOkay,â Stella said, eyelashes fluttering. âAre you going to kiss me?âÂ
âIf you want me to,â he answered, his hand sliding from her chin to the curve of her jaw until his fingers pressed against the hollow of her neck.
âI do,â Stella managed to get out.Â
Niall leaned down, pressing a lingering kiss to her lips. It was a moment of relief all over again. Stellaâs eyes fell shut and she let out a sigh against his lips. The lingering kiss morphed into one of desperation as Niall pulled her closer.Â
The angle was awkward, a strain on her neck. Stella did the only thing she could think of. She all but pushed herself onto him, fingers curling into his t-shirt. At some point the motion set them off balance and the kiss ended just as Niall gripped her hips to save from falling off the futon.Â
âEasy,â Niall murmured, lips spreading into a smile.Â
Stella felt herself begin to smile as she straddled him properly. And that was the Stella he loved to see, shining eyes and flushed cheeks, âthere she is,â Niall murmured, pushing his fingers through her hair. âStel, I missed your smile. I havenât seen it in days.âÂ
It felt like she hadnât smiled in days either, but there she was, cheeks beginning to ache. Niallâs hands slid over her bum, pulling her closer, impossibly so. He kissed her again, far too innocent for someone that had a hold of her so tightly.
Niall had a way of getting Stella to take the lead. Heâd give her the very least until she had no choice but to kiss him fervently, fingers tugging at his hair until he groaned against her lips.Â
Stella found herself to be a little too good at taking control of him. The desire pooled in her belly as they kissed until the ache between her legs became too much and she had to pull away, wiping her mouth on the back of her hand, âeasy,â she said as if this whole thing wasnât her doing.Â
âIâm trying,â Niall breathed, fingers sliding under her shirt to press against her back. âUnfair when you pull my hair. I think you do it on purpose.âÂ
Stella gave him a smile, her best innocent smile. Who would believe that of Stella? Probably only Niall. He was eager to keep that secret for her, though.Â
