Five nights of extravagant dinners and parties that lasted everyday, dances, paintings, drinks, everything you could think of. There was only ever one rule, spoken to you quietly by the maid that stopped by your table at dinner on the first night.
“Do not leave your room after the night ends until the bell tolls in the morning.”
You’ve followed that rule so far, the fear of what would happen if you didn’t ran a little too deep for comfort. Each night there were different food options, all from different countries but somehow equally authentic, and there was no limit on how much you could eat.
The last night was a little different though, instead of everyone meeting in the main ballroom, you were brought a menu by one of the maids. She waited patiently at the door until you told her which option you wanted. It was strange, but perhaps the owners didn’t want to be bothered tonight.
After dinner, you were told to put your mask on and meet in the foyer like you had the first night. Another odd choice since there haven’t been any real meetings since that night. Perhaps it was just a farewell.
“The family has prepared a game for your final night.” The male guard from the first night spoke loudly and firmly. “You’ve been separated, if you were placed in team one, please come with me. Team two, stay.”
You hadn’t been given a team, though it seemed evident that the people on team one had as they all shuffled away to follow the man. The woman that was with him in the first night took his place and smiled happily at the rest of the people remaining.
She waited until all of the others had exited the room before she spoke.
“It’s hide and seek.” She smiles. “Only rule is to not get caught. If you can outrun the person that finds you and hide again, that’s fine.”
