Something that caught my eye was the word “trial”, and while it could just be interpreted as: a challenge, a test. which lines up with what we know about pantheon so far.

However, trial could also be interpreted as in a courtroom trial, which implies that our cast are all being accused of a crime, and the competition is to prove that they are worthy of being found innocent or being forgiven for whatever they are accused of.

Now as a firm believer of the: champions are dead and the prize is a second chance at life theory, I present to you this potential storyline:

Our champions are not devout followers who have who have served their god/goddess for a long time. But rather people who, during their lifetime were (falsely?) accused of crimes and given the death sentence or other harsh punishments that led to their death. Now in the underworld they are being given a chance to have their sentence revoked by proving their worth in a competition where the winner gets to live again. And the gods chose their champion bases on who they think deserves to live the most (or has the best chance of winning), the gods involvement is basically just betting on racehorses except you can give your horse superpowers.

This also leaves a lot of room for different dynamics between god & champion, ranging from incredibly grateful and determined to make their patron proud to feeling like they are only being used for entertainment and resentful.
