Creativity Explored_

On March 6, Creativity Explored celebrated our first installation of the Of Here From There | De Aquí Desde Allá project with a private opening at the San Francisco Art Institute. A long-running project in partnership with artist Ana Teresa Fernández, this first installation includes sculptures, multimedia projections activated by performances celebrating CE artists and their journeys.

The components of the installation are inspired by CE artwork created during collaborative workshops led by Ana Teresa Fernández. Over the last year, Fernández led over a dozen workshops with CE artists and community members, exploring themes of home and migration. She captured brushstrokes and mark making on film and brought in performing artists who empowered CE artists to experiment with new mediums like dance and poetry.

The result is a dynamic and electric installation weaving together the images, words, and symbols by CE artists. Core to the installation are sculptures based on works created by CE artists, painted gallery white.

Six large flowers based on work by Elana Cooper sprout from the center of the room. Makeya Kaiser’s 5-footed, cowboy boot stars hang from the walls. Enkh-Amar Shagdarguntev’s house illustration presides over the space while Kevin Roach’s iconic eyeballs flurry across another. A cloud, created out of rope by Charlie Barthelet and Fernández, add a textural element upon which animations dance.

The sculptures are illuminated by looped, digitally-mapped projections of CE artists’ mark making: energetic abstract gestures by Kaocrew “Yah” Kakabutra and the process behind a classic Vincent Jackson portrait adorn the sculptures, taking form over time. The projections create a feeling that the artists’ processes are unfolding in the present moment, extending beyond the CE studio and the moment of creation to honor the creative spirit itself. 

During the opening celebration, the installation was activated by three performers. Poet Leticia Hernández-Linares performed three poems based on her workshops with CE artists and her reflections on calling the Mission District home, referencing conversations she had with CE artists Peter Cordova and Kevin Roach about colonization and San Francisco history.

Responding to the verses, dancer Vanessa Sanchez (La Mezcla) performed a mix of Mexican zapateado and tap dance, reverberating rhythm throughout the space. Afterwards, Tommy Guerrero and his band played a musical set. Guerrero’s guitar sang in harmony with the glowing projections.

A special element of the installation was a paleta (popsicle) cart created by CE artist Jesus Huezo with support from Fernández and CE teaching artists and volunteers. Huezo painted a list of paleta flavors on the cart. The flavors were invented by CE artists during a record-making workshop with Fernández. Flavors included “Love,” “Hot Dog,” and “Never Can Say Goodbye.” Guests were asked to write paleta postcards to CE artists, responding to the artists’ work and sharing encouraging words.

El día 6 de marzo, Creativity Explored (CE) celebramos nuestra primera instalación artística del proyecto Of Here From There | De Aquí Desde Allá con una recepción privada en el San Francisco Art Institute. Parte de un proyecto de larga duración en colaboración con la artista Ana Teresa Fernández, esta primera instalación artística incluye esculturas y proyecciones multimedia activadas por presentaciones que celebran a los artistas de CE y sus caminos por la vida.

Los componentes de la instalación son inspirados por obras de arte creados durante los talleres colaborativos dirigidos por Fernández. Durante el último año, Fernández guió más de una docena de talleres con los artistas de CE y miembros de la comunidad, explorando temas de hogar y migración. Filmó pinceladas y marcas hechas por los artistas y trajo artistas de performance que empoderaron a los artistas de CE a experimentar con nuevos medios como la danza y la poesía.

El resultado es una instalación dinámica y eléctrica que entrelaza las imágenes, palabras, y símbolos creados por los artistas de CE. El núcleo de la instalación son esculturas basadas en obras creados por los artistas de CE, pintadas de blanco.

Seis flores grandes basadas en las obras de Elana Cooper brotan del centro de la habitación. Estrellas con cinco pies calzados de botas vaqueras por Makeya Kaiser cuelgan de las paredes. La poeta Leticia Hernández-Linares presentó tres poemas cuyos temas se basan en sus talleres con los artistas de CE y sus reflexiones al llamar hogar al Distrito de la Misión, haciendo referencia a conversaciones que tuvo con artistas de CE Peter Cordova y Kevin Roach sobre la colonización y la historia de San Francisco. 

En respuesta a los versos, la bailarina Vanessa Sanchez (La Mezcla) realizó una mezcla de zapateado Mexicano y ‘tap dance’, reverberando el ritmo en todo el espacio. On September 12th and 19th, dancer Vanessa Sanchez visited CE for a special performance and workshop as part of the Of Here From There project. Sanchez performed several routines and improvisations that she called “a mix of Mexican zapateado and tap dance.” She used tap shoes and a tarima, a square wooden platform that functioned as both a small stage for the dance and a percussion instrument against which the dancer’s steps resonated.

Sanchez created a rhythm with her feet that echoed through the studios and engaged many of the artists working around her-- Yolanda Ramirez, Ade Lewis and Roland Record at CE1 all jumped from their seats to dance to the beat, as did Jesus Huezo and Donald Gruneisen at CE2. The tap-dancing especially inspired artists who are nonverbal: At CE1, Carine Raper watched in rapt attention from her seat and Claus Groeger even stepped onto the tarima to try out the different steps for himself. At CE2, Kaocrew “Yah” Kakabutra jumped in to join the dance, laughing and clapping throughout. 

After performing a couple routines for the artists, Sanchez explained the steps that make up a tap routine, including stomps, shuffles and leg swings. With the help of lead artist Ana Teresa Fernández, she then asked the artists to think of a color and shape for each movement. For the leg swing, Ade Lewis suggested a blue noodle, drawing it on a portrait he made of Sanchez in real-time during her performance. 

While CE artists focus mainly on visual art, this workshop showed how inspiration can come from other mediums as well. Without relying on verbal or visual explanation, the beat of the tap dancing and zapateado connected the artists in the room through a shared rhythm.

During the final installation of the Of Here From There project, dancers and musicians, including Sanchez, will move and sing in tune with the animations created from CE artists’ mark-making processes. Sanchez’s performance in the studio gave artists a first taste of this collaboration.

En el 12 y 19 de septiembre, la bailarina Vanessa Sanchez visitó con CE para un performance y un taller especial como parte del proyecto De Aquí Desde Allá. Sanchez realizó varias rutinas e improvisaciones que ella llamó “una mezcla de zapateado Mexicano y tap dance.” Usó zapatos de claqué y una tarima, una plataforma de madera que funcionó a la vez como un escenario pequeño y un instrumento de percusión en el que resonaban los pasos de la bailarina. 

Sánchez creó unos ritmos con sus pies que se hizo eco a través del estudio y contagió a algunos de los artistas que trabajaban alrededor-- Yolanda Ramirez, Ade Lewis, y Roland Record en CE1 saltaron de sus asientos para bailar al ritmo de su baile, al igual que Jesus Huezo y Donald Gruneisen en CE 2. Este baile de claqué inspiró especialmente a los artistas no verbales: En CE1 Corine Raper miraba absorta con atención desde su asiento y Claus Groeger se subió a la tarima para probar los diferentes pasos por sí mismo. En CE2, Kaocrew “Yah” Kakabutra se unió al baile, riéndose y aplaudiendo durante todo.

Community members of all ages and abilities joined CE artists on Saturday, August 24th and August 31st for clay sculpture-making workshops with Ana Teresa Fernández. The first weekend, 17 attendees from the community worked alongside five CE artists to sculpt figures that evoke home, migration and family. The second weekend we welcomed 28 community members and six CE artists. Participants included families, young children, local artists, newcomers to CE and longtime supporters. 

Ana Teresa began the workshop by asking participants for words relating to different themes – transport, travel, home, and animals – and writing them on flipchart paper. People threw out words like “kitchen,” “bicycle,” “bears,” and “wings.” Fernández then asked participants to think of ways to combine these different elements into hybrids, like a bicycle with wings or a fridge with roller skates. Then, participants were tasked with molding these hybrid figures with clay.

For a lot of people in the room – including many CE artists – it was their first time working with clay. As the participants played with the clay and explored the sculpting tools available, fascinating figures were formed. Community members made a swan on a snowboard, a kangaroo in a bathtub covered with flowers and leaves, and a tree with fish growing on it like fruit. CE artist Melody Lima made a fried egg “because she likes breakfast food,” and John Iwascewicz collaborated on a piece with his mom depicting their family bond. 

Towards the end of the workshop, Ana Teresa asked each person to show their piece to the group and explain the inspiration behind their hybrid figures. CE board member Cheryl Ward created a bare foot with wings resembling mercury’s winged feet. She said her piece commemorated the long journeys people take by foot to get somewhere safer than where they came from, and “how much easier the journey would be with wings.”

One participant created a complex scene of a train on a train track with a dog standing over it and a giant fork bent over the dog. He explained that he worked in transportation, missed the dog he had when he lived in Sicily, and loved pasta-- the scene was a tribute to that which he had left behind and the joys and interests he took with him. People often talked about their parents when sculpting what reminds them of home, thinking back to their childhood memories for inspiration. They added surreal features to the pieces, such as a dozen legs to represent the many roles our parents take in our lives. 

The resulting ceramic pieces will be used to provide inspiration as Fernández and a small team of artists build large-scale sculptures out of paper mache for the upcoming installation events.

En el  24 y 31 de agosto, miembros de la comunidad de todas habilidades y edades se juntaron con artistas de CE, en un taller de escultura, con Ana Teresa Fernández. El primer sábado, 17 asistentes de la comunidad trabajaron al lado de cinco artistas de CE para esculpir figuras que evocan el tema del hogar, la migración, y la familia. El sábado siguiente dimos la bienvenida a 28 miembros de la comunidad y a seis artistas de CE. Incluidos entre los participantes habían familias, niños, artistas locales y partidarios a CE.

Ana Teresa empezó el taller pidiendo a los participantes palabras relacionadas al tema de: el transporte, viajar , la casa, y animales- Las palabras dictadas fueron escritas sobre papel de rotafolio. Expresaron palabras como “cocina,” “bicicleta,” “osos,” y “alas.” De ahi, Fernández pidió a los participantes que pensaran sobre maneras de cómo combinar estos elementos diferentes creando híbridos, como una bicicleta con alas o una nevera con patines. Luego, los participantes tuvieron la tarea de moldear estas figuras híbridas con arcilla. 

Para mucha gente en el espacio -- incluso muchos de los artistas de CE -- esta fue su primera vez trabajando con arcilla. Mientras los participantes jugaban con la arcilla y exploraban las herramientas para esculpir disponibles, se formaron figuras fascinantes. Miembros de la comunidad hicieron un cisne en una tabla de snowboard, un canguro en una bañera cubierto con flores y foliaje, y un árbol con peces creciendo como frutas. Artista de CE Melody Lima hizo un huevo estrellado porque “le encanta el desayuno,” y John Iwaszewicz colaboró en una obra con su madre representando su vínculo familiar. 

Hacía el final del taller, Ana Teresa pidió que cada persona mostrara su obra al grupo y diera una explicación sobre la inspiración detrás de sus figuras híbridas. Cheryl Ward, miembra de la mesa directiva de CE, creó un pie descalzo con alas como si fuera el pie emplumado de Mercurio. Dijo que su obra conmemoraba los viajes largos que la gente toma a pie para llegar a un sitio más seguro que el sitio que dejaron, y “cuánto más fácil sería el viaje si fuese con alas.”

Un participante creó una escena compleja de un perro parado sobre un tren y un tenedor gigante inclinado sobre todo. Explicó que trabajaba en el transportación, que extrañaba a su perro que tenía cuando vivía en Sicilia, y que amaba la pasta-- la escena era un tributo a lo que había dejado atrás y las alegrías e intereses que se llevó con él. A menudo la gente hablaban de sus padres al esculpir lo que les recordaba a su hogar, pensando en recuerdos de su niñez como inspiración. 

Las piezas de cerámica resultantes se utilizarán para inspirar a Fernández y a un equipo pequeño de artistas a construir esculturas a gran escala de papel maché para los próximos eventos de la instalación.

What Do Lovebirds Do?
