In every community, living traditions, ranging from rituals and performing arts to oral stories, crafts, and celebrations, are the heart of cultural identity. UNESCOโs Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) list helps protect these precious expressions so they donโt fade away with time.
And now, Diwali has been added to that list as Indiaโs 16th tradition! The announcement was made at the 20th UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee session, held at New Delhiโs Red Fort from December 8 to 13, 2025.
Along with Yoga, Durga Puja, Kumbh Mela, Garba of Gujarat, Chahu dance, Traditional brass and copper craft of utensil making, Sankirtana, Buddhist chanting of Ladakh, Chhau dance, Kalbelia folk songs and dances, Mudiyettu, Ramman, Kuttiyattam, Tradition of Vedic chanting, Ramlila โฆ and now, Diwali joins this incredible group of cultural treasures. A proud moment for us all!
