Organisation and Planning
I, Jack Neil. A self employed musician am about to embark on my songwriting career, sharing my lyrics and music with the world. I use many social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, and of Course Tumblr. All these social media sites have their own qualities which is why i have chosen Tumblr as my platform to blog.Ā
I intend to use tumblr as a way to share with fans, learners and others how i work as a self sufficient DIY Musician. I will be writing my tips and tricks like a diary so that its easy to follow. Of course theirs only so much information i can give about my current project as i donāt want any spoilers just yet :P but i hope my tips benefit you in your personal or working life.
Day 1 of working as a self-employed musician
On my first day of work i got up, had a shower then made myself a cup of coffee. Once i had made my coffee I sat down in my quite living room and proceeded to log into my lap top so that i could open my schedule for the week ahead.Ā
This schedule was written a week prior so that i was prepared for the week ahead. One lesson i learned in college is āFail to prepare, prepare to failā. As a Self Employed musician it is of huge importance that you stay organised. Staying organised means not getting overwhelmed by the mountain of work staring you right in the face that you should of done ages ago but yet again, procrastination got the better of you and you decided that playing Mafia 2 instead of meeting your personal deadlines. Ā
Its very easy to just drift away from your work. Itās even harder when your self employed because you have to also āself motivateā. Thereās no one there who is going to do the work for you, and if you are having doubts that you can have full commitment to what your doing, you may need to re consider your career. Drifting away from your workload and becoming ādemotivatedā can be the result of one thing....poor organisation.Ā
To avoid this personally, I plan things out prior to working on them. So i knew the priories this week were to:Ā
- Decide a release date for my single.
- Research certain areas of my knowledge that iām not to confident with.Ā
- Keep track of my Finances
- Make a list of Office essentials i will need to buy such as: Money books, receipt books etc. Ā Ā
Therefore i made sure to include these tasks in my weekly planner and then fill in the gaps with sub tasks that might come along with the main tasks.Ā
Here is a Diary entry from my first day:Ā
- Estimate duration of projectĀ
- Confirm a release date for the single ā*********ā
- Create online social media platforms on the most popular social media sights.
- Research two gigs to go to this monthā
I write the objectives for that day and tick them off as i go along.Ā
The reason planning everything is so effective to me is because it takes your focus away from the bigger picture and puts things into bite size, manageable chunks so i donāt get myself stressed out with the overwhelming load. Ā
