Summary: two broken teenagers who finally found someone who understands their quiet pain.
You find Johnny in the lot again.
He sits with his arms wrapped tightly around his knees, and his shoulders hunched over like he would hide himself into the shadows and vanish into thin air if it was an option, and a part deep inside of you knows that he wouldn't mind if he did.
You know the feeling all too well. The posture of the unbelievably heavy weight of neglection and sadness he carried. You know that feeling too. You've worn it yourself.
You don't say anything at first as you lower yourself down next to him. Johnny glances over, body tense and startled for a split second, then immediately relaxes when he recognises it's you.
"Didn't think anyone'd be out this late," he murmurs, voice soft and tired.
You shrug, "Didn't want to go home."
Johnny nods understandably, like he understands every word you utter. Because he does, even the words you don't say.
The silence that settled amongst you both was soothing and peaceful. The type of silence that felt like a soft warm blanket rather than a rusted snare cage.
After a while, Johnny speaks again, barely above a whisper:
"You ever feel like... like you're just making things worse?"
Your throat tightens, "Everyday."
He looks at you then, really looks at you. He notices the fresh cut on your cheek, perfectly mirroring the one on his own. He lifts his hand to his own cut, then lets his fingers drift towards yours, brushing your cheek with a touch so delicate it feels like he's afraid you'll break.
"I'm sorry" he whispers, softly.
"For knowin what you mean,"
You swallow. "I'm sorry too"
A breeze drifts through the lot, brushing Johnny's hair across his forehead and blowing your hair wildly. He shivers and you absentmindedly shift towards him. He goes still, his breath hitching, like he's scared to move and ruin the momemt.
"You don't need to be scared when you're with me." You whisper.
Johnny exhales, delicately.
"I ain't," he whispers, "not when it's you."
You slowly rest your head on his shoulder. He hesitates for a second before resting his cheek on top of your head. He's gentle as he lowers his cheek, as if he's afraid you'll break.
His hand drifts towards yours, slow and unsure. You lace your fingers with his as he let's out a shaky breath. Slowly, he draws soft circles onto your hand, soothingly.
"You ever think about leavin'?" he asks quietly, already knowing your answer.
"Yeah," he whispers, "me too"
You squeeze his hand. "Maybe one day."
Johnny nods, eyes fixed on the empty street "One day."
The moon peers out from behind a cloud, bathing the two of you in a soft silver glow. Johnny turns slightly, just enough to see your face. His eyes trace every feature, like he's memorising them.
"You're so beautiful," he says, voice barely audible.
Your face softens, "Johnny-"
He shakes his head quickly, embarrassed. "Sorry. I just - I ain't good at sayin' things right."
"You said it perfectly," you say softly, reassuringly.
Johnny's cheeks were tinted in an adorable shade of pink as he looks down at your joined hands, thumb brushing your knuckles, refusing to meet your eyes.
"You make me feel....seen," he says. "Like I ain't as messed up as I think, as they make me out to be."
Your heart aches. "You aren't messed up"
He looks up, eyes shining. "You really think so?"
Johnny swallows hard. "No one has ever said that to me before."
You lift your free hand and gently brush his hair out of his eyes.
"You deserve someone who treats you gently," you say.
Johnny's voice cracks. "You treat me gently"
You smile, softly. "That's because i care about you."
Johnny's face softens, not just his eyes but his mouth, his shoulders, the tightness in his jaw. "I care about you too. More than you will ever know."
You lean in, slow enough for him to pull away if he wants to. He doesn't. He tilts his forehead against yours, fluttering his eyes shut.
The lot is quiet around you, the soft sound of leafs, the hoot from an owl, the synced rhythm of your breaths, the world finally giving you both a moment that doesnt hurt.
Johnny's voice is small, but steady. "Can we stay like this? Just for a while?"
You rest your head back onto his shoulder. "As long as you want."
He let's out a breath that sounds almost like relief. "Then....forever sounds real nice."
You smile preciously, closing your eyes as he wraps an arm around you and placing a gentle kiss on top of your head.
As you both sit there, peaceful, Johnny Cade makes a promise to himself to never let you go.
