Eldest child of an elitist family who was expected to perform very well in school. When they become a teenager they start spending more time away from home, frequenting less reputable crowds, building a reputation as a troublemaker. At the very least getting involved with drugs and alcohol.

Has a (slightly) more masculine given name but chooses to go by the more feminine version of that name, grows hair out, wears baggy clothing.

Younger child who is molded into the a "successful version" of the late elder child who failed to live up to the ideal of a "perfect son."

Charles can't even remember Ellie but subconsciously refuses to cut his hair out of some wistful reminder of them. So clearly having long hair was important to them.

None of this requires trans subtext ofc but despair time isn't afraid to touch trans stories so I'll advocate for it until proven otherwise. Even if they don't turn out trans I still think this general flow of character beats is correct.
