Coming down to the wire, doesn’t look like I’m going to make the deadline.

Hey remember that thing I said I was going to work on? I’ve actually been working on it this time. 

I haven’t had the chance to sit down and dev for fun for a while it seems. I’m more than a bit rusty, and got caught up in some technical details that know I really shouldn’t have been worrying about this early in development, but I still miss it all.

Things have been settling down recently or at least enough so that I can pretend they are so I wanted to get back into gamedev. Luckily good old A Game By its Cover Jam came by to visit this August. 

I’m choosing Ghost club out of the sheer ridiculousness of the concept, but all the famicase submissions this year are so good. I included some other favorites of mine. Go check them out!

4 More years! of nodev

I always thought the game-pausing effects were really cool. I only recently found that the term for these effects were called “dimming”.

Still alive and devving.

Did some some more tooling around with animation today, testing out various placeholder sprites of various sizes and proportions. I thought I could go with a bigger scale to make the most of standard resolutions, but then I had issues with the isometric perspective. It was hard to tell at what “depth” you were, since I was using a footprint based collision. You get a little bit of that weirdness in arcadebeat-em-ups where its was difficult to tell which attacks were landing, or passing behind. Something Battle network skirts by having exactly 3 distinct depths and something I made much worse by making hundreds of them to move freely in. 

Out of all I tried, the sprite I liked best was Rose Gundam, oddly enough. The SD proportions allow its hitbox and attack origin be the same position. Its a lot easier to read in terms of gameplay.

Been mostly working on animation and worldbuilding things totally worth spending my time on today.
