Xinyi held his gaze for a moment after the words left his mouth. You've always been dramatic. Normally, she would've rolled her eyes and thrown the insult right back at him but tonight, she couldn't not when he looked like this. Rainwater ran down his bruised face, catching on the blood gathered at the corner of his split lip. His dark hair clung to his forehead, half-concealing cuts and scrapes that seemed to multiply the longer she looked. And somehow, despite all of it, he was still trying to act like it didn't matter. Then she noticed the things most people would've missed—the slight tremor in his hands, the way he favored one side whenever he moved, the hitch in his breathing that betrayed every ounce of pain he was trying to hide. When he finally admitted it was because of the money, of course it was, Xinyi let out a slow breath and shook her head. "You idiot." There was no anger behind the words, only relief that he'd finally stopped lying.

The moment his hand drifted to his ribs, however briefly, her stomach sank. Before she could stop herself, she reached for him, immediately catching his arm when he tried to stand. "Be careful." The words came out sharper than intended, not because she was angry, but because she was scared. Scared of how much pain he was clearly in. Scared of how hard he was trying to pretend otherwise."If you fall and crack your head open, I'm not carrying you." It was an obvious lie. Then a quiet laugh escaped her before she looked up at him again, her eyes tracing over every bruise and cut decorating his face. "You think I should be angry?" she asked softly. "I know I should be." Her shoulders rose and fell with a small sigh." But I can never seem to stay angry with you." For a moment, only the rain filled the silence between them. Then Xinyi stepped closer and gently brushed a damp strand of hair away from his forehead. Her fingers lingered briefly against his temple before slipping away, the gesture so instinctive she barely seemed aware of doing it ."You can survive one night without me calling you an idiot," she murmured, a faint smile tugging at her lips. "Tomorrow, though? You're getting the full lecture." Her hand found his arm again, steadying him. "But tonight..." Her voice softened. "Tonight I'll cut you some slack." She studied him for another second before letting out a quiet sigh.

"Come on. We're getting you out of the rain." Before he could argue, she slipped his arm over her shoulders and guided him forward. Immediately she felt how tense he was, how much effort it took just to remain standing. Every few steps during the short walk to the convenience store, she felt him stiffen beside her as they kept walking, only confirming what she'd suspected all along. By the time they reached the awning outside the brightly lit store, she was convinced he was hurt far worse than he was admitting. "Sit." For once, it wasn't a suggestion, it was an order. A few minutes later, she returned water, and a hot canned coffee that she immediately pressed into his hands. "Hold that." Pulling a chair in front of him, she sat down and finally got a proper look at him beneath the fluorescent lights. The bruising along his cheekbone looked darker now, the split in his lip seemed deeper, the exhaustion he'd been trying to hide sat plainly in his eyes...It made her chest ache. Swallowing hard, she dipped a cotton swab that she took out from the bag she was holding on into the ointment before looking back up. "Tell me if this hurts." Her voice softened into almost a whisper as she gently tilted his chin toward her. For a brief moment, their eyes met and that made her chest tighten but she brushed it off as her gaze dropped to the cut on his lip. The scent of rain and coffee lingered between them as she leaned little closer to get better look, carefully applying the ointment with a touch so gentle it was almost hesitant as if she was afraid of causing him even the slightest bit more pain. "You know..." she murmured quietly, still focused on the injury. "You don't always have to fight back." She dabbed at another bruise before shaking her head. "Next time, just run." Her thumb brushed lightly against his jaw as she steadied his face. "Your pride isn't worth this."

haoran hated this. not the stinging ointment. not the ache spreading through every inch of his body. not even the lecture he knew was coming tomorrow. he hated sitting still while somebody worried about him. the hot can of coffee rested between both hands, the warmth seeping into cold fingers that still hadn't completely stopped trembling. he stared down at it while xinyi worked, watching the thin wisps of steam curl into the air. when she tilted his chil toward her, his instinct was to pull away. but he didn't. the fluorescent lights overhead were unforgiving, exposing every bruise and cut he'd hoped looked better in the dark. up close, he could see the concentration in her expression. the slight furrow between her brows. the careful way she handled each injury as if he might break apart beneath her hands. it made something uncomfortable settle in his chest. "you're making it sound like i got hit by a truck." the attempt at humor came out weaker than intended. he winced when the cotton swab brushed the split in his lip. "okay, maybe a small truck." a quiet sigh escaped him as he leaned back into the plastic chair. every muscle in his body felt heavy. the adrenaline that had kept him moving earlier was fading fast, leaving behind exhaustion and pain in its place. at her suggestion that he should have run, a dry laugh left him. "it doesn't work like that." his gaze dropped to the coffee can in his hands again. "i run tonight, they come back tomorrow. maybe they're angrier next time." or how to lure him out. the words were simple, matter-of-fact. "i can't hide, they'd know where to find me. you don't get away from people like that by running. running would only delay the inevitable." part of him had thought he could handle it. part of him had thought if he stood his ground long enough, maybe they would back off. instead, he ended up bleeding in an alley for xinyi to find. again. the realization made him grimace. when her thumb brushed against his jaw, his gaze lifted. for a moment, he forgot whatever sarcastic response he'd been about to make. the convenience store buzzed quietly around them. a refrigerator hummed somewhere nearby, rain tapped steadily against the windows. yet all of it seemed strangely distant. his eyes lingered on her face before he caught himself. "you know, most people would've listened when i told them to mind their own business. they definitely wouldn't have dragged me through rain, bought me coffee, and played emergency room nurse." despite the words, there wasn't a trace a complaint in his voice. if anything, he sounded confused by the effort she was willing to go through for him. he wanted to thank her but the words got all caught up in his throat, though haoran's eyes expressed his appreciation clearly.

Angel listened as Garam set his phone down on the table, then wandered closer. Closer than necessary, as he could feel the heat from his body. He turned from th counter, and Angel's breath caught faintly as Garam planted both hands on the counter. Caging him in, close enough that Angel could see the lack of sleep on his face, the slightly chapped quality of his lips. The proximity sent a jolt through him. Dammit, he's cute. A reminder that they were still navigating this new, fragile space between them. You've had a busy morning. When Garam's voice came out rough and sleepy, it felt intimate. Then came the small smile that tugged at the corner of his mouth, aimed at the mountain of pancakes. You don't expect me to eat all of that, do you? The stack's nearly my height. Angel took a minute to respond. This was what always got him in trouble with Garam. Suddenly, the only thing he wanted to eat was right in front of him. The image of Garam on the table…Angel shook his head slightly as if shaking the thought loose and huffed a soft laugh. The sound surprised even him. He set his mug down, letting himself be boxed in, making no move to create distance. The warmth of Garam's forearms bracketed him on either side, and he could smell the sleep still clinging to his skin. This was going to be hard. "That's the goal, yeah," Angel said, voice low, a hint of tired humor threading through. "Strawberries have vitamins. Pancakes have carbs. Coffee has caffeine. It's a balanced meal if you don't think about it too hard." His eyes traced over Garam's face now, a cheap attempt to distract his thoughts. The shadows beneath his eyes, the way his lids still looked heavy, the slight redness around his lashes that suggested at least a few tears had fallen during the night. He didn't sleep well either, Angel realized, chest tightening. Or barely. Angel's hand lifted before he consciously decided it, fingers brushing a stray strand of hair from Garam's forehead, tucking it behind his ear with a gentleness that made his own throat tighten. The pad of his thumb grazed the shell of Garam's ear, featherlight, lingering. "Let's eat. I need you to eat at least one full pancake," Angel said sternly but quietly, dropping his hand back to the counter, letting it rest close to Garam's forearm without quite touching. Even with all of Garam’s hair sticking up, Angel found him endearing. "In regard to keeping you in the apartment. I just wanted to do something nice for you. Make sure you started the day knowing someone was thinking about you." Angel's gaze held Garam's, soft, tired, open in a way that felt vulnerable but necessary. "Eat with me," Angel said, not a command this time, just an invitation, his voice quieter than he intended. "Please. Then we can figure out the rest of the day together." He turned slightly, reaching for a second mug, filling it with coffee the way Garam liked it, and slid it across the counter toward him. He walked over and pulled out the other’s chair before going to his own. The morning light filtered through the kitchen windows, casting everything in a pale gold glow. The scent of butter and vanilla still lingered, warm and inviting. For the first time in what felt like forever, the apartment didn't feel like a battleground or a hiding place. It just felt like home, especially with Garam.

for a moment there, garam forgot how to speak. it happened the second angel's fingers touched his hair. the gesture was so simple. innocent, even. but nobody had ever done things like that for him without wanting something in return. not really. his gaze dropped briefly, following the path of angel's hand as it settled back against the counter. let's eat. i need you to eat at least one full pancake. the corner of garam's mouth twitched upward. "one whole pancake?" he repeated. "you're a ruthless roommate." the teasing came easily enough. the rest didn't. make sure you started the day knowing someone was thinking about you. his smile faded. not completely. just softened. garam held angel's gaze for a moment longer, trying unsuccessfully to ignore the way his chest felt strangely tight. someone was thinking about you. the words shouldn't have affected him this much yet, somehow, they did. more than breakfast. more than coffee. more than waking up to messages waiting for him. because angel hadn't done any of this to impress him. he hadn't done it because he felt obligated. he'd done it because he cared. the realization settled somewhere deep and uncomfortable. comfortable, too. a dangerous combination. "you know," garam began quietly, his eyes dropping to the coffee angel had prepared the way he liked it, "you're making it really difficult for me to maintain my reputation as an independent adult." his attempt at humor lacked its usual confidence. he reached for the mug, wrapping both hands around it, mostly to give himself something to do. the warmth seeped into his fingers. just like angel's apartment. just like angel. his throat tightened unexpectedly. "thank you." the words came out softer than intended. real, no jokes attached. no deflection, just gratitude. for the breakfast, for the camera, for the door, for staying. for all of it. garam finally stepped back, giving angel room to move, though he found himself reluctant to create the distance. "fine," he relented with an exaggerated sigh. "i'll eat your giant pancake." he finally retreated to the table. the confidence he'd managed to fake moments ago didn't survive the walk. as soon as he sat down, the pancakes became a problem. garam stared at them. there was nothing wrong with them. they looked good, they smelled good. angel had gone out of his way to make them for him. that was the problem. his stomach twisted. a familiar voice surfaced immediately, cruel and relentless. you don't deserve this, you don't deserve him. you don't get to hurt people and then sit here eating pancakes like everything is fine. his jaw tightened. across from him sat proof that angel was trying, every small act of care that garam wasn't sure he'd earned. but angel had asked him to eat. and for once, garam wanted to be the kind of person who listened. the kind of person who got better instead of making excuses, the kind of person angel wouldn't eventually regret choosing. so he reached for the fork with a shaking hand, only slightly but enough to be noticed. he could easily blame sleep deprivation. he cut into the pancake and took a bite. then another. slowly, methodically. as though he were following instructions he'd been given rather than eating breakfast. the food tasted good. better than good, actually. he just couldn't seem to convince his body of that. still, he kept eating. not much. not quickly. but enough. his eyes drifted toward angel, uncertainty sat plainly across his features despite his best efforts to hide it. he looked exhausted, but he ate.

muse: yun qian (she/her, writer and streamer - please read pinned post) open: anyone (preferably another gamer/streamer?) plot: when your muse gets randomly paired with her for a round at a gaming cafe, only to realize they've had heated, live-streamed matches against each other before that did not go well, considering how her terrible skills have only caused y/m to drop ranks

the cafe is loud. keyboard clicks, soda cans cracking, someone yelling victory or defeat every five minutes, that it almost makes it hard for yun qian to focus. and that is probably why the big "game over" splashes across her screen — again, but not unusual. next to her, she could already feel the tension rolling off of them in slow waves. she doesn't have to look at them to know they're likely disappointed, and yet, despite knowing better, the words slip out anyway. "well ... if you hadn't rushed me, i probably wouldn't have panicked. might have lasted longer too." as much as it has been a random game that doesn't even mean anything, their attitude has gotten under her skin somehow, leaving a mild bitter taste in her mouth.

shilong wasn't an asshole. in fact, most people would have described him as patient, easygoing, even kind. but gaming was different. gaming was the one thing that could drag the worst parts of his temper to the surface, especially when he was playing for fun instead of work. the bright red defeat screen still glowed across his monitor as he sat back in his chair, forcing himself to take a slow breath. it didn't help. maybe he could've let the loss go. maybe he could've ignored the frustration simmering beneath his skin. but the second she shifted the blame onto him, whatever restraint he had left snapped. "you think that was my fault?" the question came out low and sharp, his disbelief evident even through the black cotton mask hiding half of his face. thankfully, he was logged into one of his private accounts rather than his professional one. between the mask and the alternate gamer tag, nobody in the cafe would recognize him. he could afford to be irritated. a humorless laugh escaped him as he shook his head. "maybe if you actually knew how to play, you wouldn't have been the reason we lost." his jaw tightened. "i wasn't the one calling for help every thirty seconds."

the silence in the car is stifling. she replays their last argument in her mind, over and over again as they meander home. she's always been a believer in the power of the tongue, the careless words she'd vollied as he'd left for another fight-- "you can't keep doing this seungyu-- not like this. i'm not going to watch you kill yourself-- you can forget about me just-- letting this shit go--" she hadn't meant it. it'd been a last ditch attempt at getting him to stay, at stopping the very thing she'd just lived through. the irony isn't lost on her. she's a stranger to him again, and it cuts. "uh yeah we just... moved in together actually. you can stay there on your own though if.. it'd be less strange than having me there with you. or i can take you somewhere else..."

the suggestion alone had him shaking his head before she'd even finished speaking. his body turned toward her instinctively, the movement quick enough to betray a hint of panic. "i can't just ask you to leave." his brows pulled together as he looked at her. even if their home would feel unfamiliar as everything else in his life right now, it was her home too. from what he'd been told, they'd built a life here together. he couldn't imagine sending her away because he couldn't remember it. "no, i ..." he started, stumbling over the words before trying again. "it's fine." another shake of his head. "you can stay. i'm fine staying together." the reassurance came out too fast, too eager. his gaze dropped to his hands, thumbs rubbing absentmindedly against his knuckles as silence settled between them once more. from the corner of his eye, he could still see her sitting there in the driver's seat. lakshmi. his partner. the word still felt strange in his head. everyone kept telling him the same thing. that they'd met sometime last year. that they'd fallen in love. that they'd moved in together. there were photographs to prove it, memories shared by everyone around them that confirmed it had all happened. but every time he looked at her, he was reminded that he couldn't remember any of it. somehow, this woman had become one of the most important people in his life, and he had no memory of becoming one of the most important people in hers. the thought left a knot in his stomach. "i just ..." he trailed off, swallowing hard. "i don't really want to be alone right now." his voice was quieter this time. finally, he lifted his head and looked over at her properly. uncertainty lingered in his expression, but so did something else⸺something earnest. "i know i don't remember us but you're still my partner. and right now, you're kind of the only thing that feels real." a weak laugh followed as he rubbed the back of his neck. "that probably sounds weird. i just ... want you to stay."
