"Yes. I doâŚhave you been speaking of this? Is it really that obvious? How do youâ?"
"My lips are sealed. No one else knows about this from me. And well, one doesn't need a lot to figure things out. It wasn't that hard to do it. Now, you have a problem going on there. I told the girl not to be that obvious because this is going to complicate things a lot for everybody around them...you know what I mean?"
Ah, nothing really. Just heading up from a quick check in with my tributes at the training center.
"I guess that by now you know what it's going on between Hector and that girl. Don't you?"
What have you got there?
"Just some handcrafting. I'm trying everything I can find useful. Â What about you?"

Found the liquor cabinet.
If I did, itâs news to me.
"Well, slow down, grab something to snack, and take your time, Â you don't want to get wasted that quick, do you?"Â
It had been one of those nightmares. If he closed his eyes he could still see the lights of the explosions as hovercrafts destroyed one of the factories in District 8 behind his eyelids. And if it wasnât the brutal way in which the rebellion had been sedated it was the Games. His mind wasnât a happy place right now, no matter how much he pretended in front of the others.
Wex didnât want people to realize just how scared he was, he wanted to seem unaffected by the whole thing. His reaping had been like a lightining in the middle of a hot summer day, unexpected and scary, and he still had to find a way to cope. Hence his inability to sleep.
Knowing full well that there was no way he could rest again (Not while he could still hear the screams of the workers trapped in the factory) he decided to visit the training room. Maybe working a sweat would help with his insomnia.
Once there he immediately saw a light near a table full of various items, most of them little more than trash in Wexâs eyes. And in front of the table a familiar figure, busy working on something that Wex still couldnât see.
"You canât sleep either?"
Wex shrugged, doing his best to hide the pained expression still haunting his eyes. âYeah, too many thoughts on my mind. Guess Iâm not the only one, though. You seem to have been at this for quite some time.â He shot a quick glance toward the table and moved to grab one of the improvised weapons lying there, the garrote wire. âNot bad, kid, not bad at all. If you use a longer wire you could set up a trap with this, you know: run fast enough against one of these things while theyâre tied to a couple of trees and you wonât even notice your head being cut off from your body.â
He put the weapon back on the table and smiled at Max. Part of him was impressed with the kidâs resourceful nature, but another part of him, the part that Wex always tried to ignore, felt like throwing up at the sight of someone so young forced to work on things like weapons and snares.Â
âI couldâŚbut the point of this is getting used to work with what I find. Otherwise, I would have a very specific idea of what I want in mindâ He explained calmly as he continued working methodically analyzing what he had on his table. âThe point of this is to get used to work with what I haveâ He commented taking a second to look at his eyes; he noticed there was more about Wexâs eyes than he pretended to, but he didnât want to ask. Max hated when people asked obvious questions.
âWhy donât you try it?â He suggested casually. âI mean, there is no point about sulking in the business. Time is running, so the best way to spend time is doing something that could help you out in the futureâ  The teen added trying to do his best effort to smile. However, he failed miserably. It was more than obvious he was not feeling as happy as he was pretending to.
âSo, I guess that by now you have already met the restâ He commented making reference to the other tributes. âSo, what do you think about them?â Max asked taking a soft breath and waited for the guyâs answer. He was curious to know what the impressions of the other boy about the rest of the tributes were.
The soft sound of the clock ticking in the background announced it was three hours passed midnight in the training center.  While most of the people were asleep, Max was working as much as he could. These were the hours of the night where there was no one around him, so it was easy to work without being observed. Therefore, no one would start asking him questions about what he was doing.
Max was sitting on what it seemed a worktable with a wide choice of objects that did not seemed to have been part of the training room. In fact, they seemed to have been taken from the garden and other places around the facilities. The objects were from assorted size tree branches to pieces of wires, as well as metallic objects. However, they all had been somehow modified in order to be turned out into weapons.  The pieces of wire were turned into a garrote wire; he seemed to be very creative about how to turn ordinary things into weapons.
"You can't sleep either?" He asked when he heard someone getting inside the room.
Found the liquor cabinet.
"Did you eat something before drinking? Otherwise, you'll have a huge hang over next morning?"
"I wish I could see things from other people's perspective"

"Sometimes I wished I could gain some weight. No matter what I eat, I'm still a stick"
"I was like that at your age, itâs part of being a kid."
"I never thought about myself as a kid. I had way too many responsibilities"
"Sometimes I wished I could gain some weight. No matter what I eat, I'm still a stick"
"I was like that at your age, itâs part of being a kid."
"Or maybe it's just the fact I've been poor and malnourished most of my life"
"Sometimes I wished I could gain some weight. No matter what I eat, I'm still a stick"
I suppose it all depends on the kind of food youâre choosing to eat.
"Turkey, Â cheese, tomato, avocado. Â It's good, but I'd like having more meat on my bones. Â I hate wearing double jeans"
"So, how you doing, Nym?"
The longer you run || Wex & Max
When Max admitted that girls were usually into guys like Wex it was hard for him not to brag, but the older tribute didnât want to seem like an uncaring asshole. Not when he could support Max and maybe gain his trust. âSure, girls love me, but itâs all in the way you sell yourself. Iâm confident, I love myself, so why shouldnât they? Youâre just too insecure, but youâre not a bad guy. Especially that bit about not wanting a relationship just for its sake. It shows you care. Chicks dig that. If you get out of this alive someoneâs going to be one lucky girl, Iâm sure.â
Once again part of his speech was to gain Maxâs friendship, but Wex found himself actually meaning most of the stuff he had just said. Sure, he wasnât really hoping that Max would make it out alive (After all that would mean Wexâs death, wouldnât it?), but the more he talked with the kid the more he took pity on him. Poor guy didnât deserve this. No one did, actually, but Max in particular was just so⌠So young, and inexperienced, and⌠And he even said he wanted Wex to win.
Seeing young Tributes on screen was a lot different. Talking to them, getting to know them⌠For the first time Wex realized fully what it meant to be a Tribute: it wasnât just about becoming a murderer in order to survive. The worst part was that you had time to get to know the people you would have to slaughter.
âHey, dude, if you need people to talk to Iâm here.â The smile on Wexâs face was a bit forced because of the depressing thoughts going through his mind, but it was genuine nonetheless. âIâm not like the other grown-ups. The way I see it, weâre not enemies until we set foot in the arena. And even then Iâd want to avoid people rather than kill âem. I know Iâm not going to be so lucky, of course, butâŚâ Wex shrugged and dismissed the topic with a wave of his hand. âWell, itâs like you said: theyâre probably going to backstab each other, so might as well let âem go on their murdering spree and face the last one standing after theyâre done, no?â
After that Wex got closer to Max once again, and once again he leaned over to whisper in his ear. âJust between us⌠They make me nervous too. But donât let âem see that. They want to get inside your head so when youâll meet them in the arena youâll be paralyzed with fear. Donât play their game.â
âItâs justâŚâ He made a small pause because he didnât know how exactly he could word things so they didnât sound so depressing. Nevertheless, he didnât find other way. âItâs just that I have to worry about other things like what Iâm going to eatâŚI canât spend time looking for a girlfriendâ He confessed softly because it was way embarrassing to admit he was that poor. He looked at Waxâs eyes and smiled at him when he mentioned he was not like the other older tributes. Maybe he could make an exception and include this guy in his plan.
âIn a way, that will help you out. Everybody is so hyper about jumping into the arena and killing each otherâ He commented as he walked to a lonely part of the training room so they could talk far away from others because he didnât want people to hear what he was just about to tell. âIf you think about it, that can work in your favor. Many people donât see the whole picture, and that can be part of their doomâ He gave the guy cryptic advice because he didnât want to be way obvious he was helping him. In addition, he wanted to check how smart Wex was to read between the lines.
âSo, if you donât have anything else to do, we could talk on weekends?â He said casually hoping the other guy accepted to be his ally. âIâm sorry, Iâm not very good making friends. Iâm usually a very lonely personâ he added smiling.
desperate times call for desperate measures
Fern nodded although she couldnât really relate. She had never done stitches on herself and hoped that she would never have to. Considering how much pain he had to be in he seemed to be amazingly steady, which was particularly fascinating in the most morbid way possible
Fern glanced up to his focused face when he offered to teach her in return. It made her worried for what he was going to ask of her. She gently furrowed her brows and looked back to his arm as he stopped the bleeding. âIt does sound fair. What are you wanting me to do exactly?â She asked cautiously.
âNow, you do understand what I am going to teach you is something that is really valuable, donât you?â  Max replied calmly as he took a deep breath. âThis may give you a fair advantage from the others. Not many people can or have the guts to do thisâŚâ  He added slowly, his voice was barely a whisper. He was still trying to do his best in order to deal with the pain without painkillers. It took him a lot, but he thought he finally was increasing his pain threshold. Hopefully, heâll be able to reach a higher level before he was sent to the arena.
âI know by sure that people in your district work with axes, and please, do not lie to me telling me you donât know anything about them, because at least you have seen people working with themâ He stated calmly as he looked into her eyes. âIâve learned some stuff here, but itâs not the same to learn stuff from people who have lived in a place where they use axes everydayâ He added using a neutral tone of voice.
âWhat I want is you to help me out to improve what Iâve learned here. I want to learn from someone who lives in a place where people can use an axe as an extension of their bodyâ Max finally commented.

"Sometimes I wished I could gain some weight. No matter what I eat, I'm still a stick"
I am the same way. Itâs just the way my body is: small delicate frame and bone structure, flat chest, small shoulders, thin, lean muscle mass, fast metabolism, a hard-gainer for muscles and fat.
Youâll have to take in a huge amount of calories for going into the Games, kid. Eat before bed to prevent muscle catabolism. Your workouts should be short and intense focusing on big muscle groups. Workout with those weights and the ropes course.Â
I still work out for Peacekeeping. The most effective part of my workout has been interval runs. That is where you power-up the treadmill and run as fast as you can for about six to ten seconds. Then you slow down for about 24 seconds, still keeping your heart rate up. You do this for a total of 10â15 minutes, depending on how conditioned you are. If you do it with the proper form, youâll get a great overall workout, strengthen your heart and burn some calories. Itâs intense. But youâll have to watch since cardio burns calories and itâs hard for you to hold on to them.Â
âI think it has something to do with the fact I've spent a lot of time sick back at the district. I mean, once I had typhoid fever for months, but I continued doing my chores and working. I guess one body develops some defense mechanisms and resistance in order to deal with thingsâŚâ
âOh, can you give me a second to write down that part? I want to learn as much as I can, manâ
âPerhaps I could try a candy before working out. That may do the trick. And well, I want to get some meat on before Iâve sent in the arena. The amount of calories Iâve spent in a day will be huge, I need my body to get some reserves if I want to make itâ
âAnd thank you, by the way. I like people talking to me very specifically about what to do. Itâs easier for me to follow something when I know exactly what to doâ
