You watched as your children slept in their beds, the dim candlelight illuminating their small figures underneath their elegant green blankets." Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, spitting images of their father. Inheriting more than simply his visage, they were troublemakers, a trait their father actively encouraged. A long day pestering the Lords that tried to court Aegon’s favor had evidently tuckered the twins out.
The nursery door creaked open as Aegon stepped in lightly, his face breaking into a wide smile as he took in the sight of the sleeping twins. He slipped to your side, his arm looping around your back and gently pulling you closer to him.
“Did you put them to sleep without me?”
“If you hadn’t tired them out so, perhaps they would have been able to stay up a little later.”
“There would be no fun in that.”
A comfortable silence fell in the room, the only sound being the calm, rhythmic breathing of your twins. Aegon traced gentle circles on your side as he reveled in the moment. His family, safe and content.
Aegon leaned closer, pressing a tender kiss to the side of your temple. “I love you, and the kids.” His voice was a hushed whisper, thick with emotion.
“You’re being sweet tonight,” you murmured softly.
“I just… never thought I’d feel this. This love for my family,” he whispered, as though confessing a secret in the night. “I would do anything for you all.” His grip tightened slightly. A fierce whisper of devotion.
You reached up to cup his cheek, your thumb brushing gently against his skin. “We love you too, Aegon.” His eyes brightened at your response, a soft smile curving his lips.
You leaned into his embrace, watching as the candlelight’s soft glow flickered over Jaehaerys and Jaehaera. Aegon’s ascension to the throne had changed so much. Late mornings lounging in bed together had given way to early council meetings that stretched well into the afternoon. Despite all the turmoil, you knew he would be your husband, the father of your children, your protector. Here in the candlelight, you knew Aegon would always come home.
