One of the laziest and most intellectually dishonest arguments Muslims make against ex-Muslims who come from a non-Arab background is, “You don’t understand Islam because you don’t speak authentic Quranic Arabic to truly see the beauty of the scripture”
Is that right? You mean the authentic Quranic Arabic like that of Saudi Arabia’s Salafis, the interpretation that’s the source of ISIS. Good to know what real Islam is all about then! Thanks for that!
"Sir I'd like to introduce you to this here Rosetta Stone. It always me to say fuck Islam in over 16 different languages! Can you believe it!"
One of the worst things about your parents not knowing you’re no longer Muslims is the constant lying that’s involved. You have to lie through your teeth everyday, all day. It might be bearable at first but after a while it just eats away at you. You don’t wanna lie to them anymore. Your friends, your parents, your siblings and extended family but you have to because you know they’ll never accept you as a non Muslim.
We live in constant fear or someone finding out or accidentally slipping up and just screaming at your parents you don’t believe in god anymore. It’s tiring. But it has to be done.

Status: Open ExMuslim ExMuslim for 3+ years When did you realise you were an ExMuslim? I was doubting Islam when I was around 15 and officially left when I was 17. What made you leave Islam? I always found myself questioning why Allah, who I was taught was merciful and loving, would have such disregard for the suffering of his creation. As I became older I began to study Islam because I wanted a sign to show me that this was the Truth and to show me that my ideals and Islamic ideals could be one. However this proved not to be true and the more I studied Islam the more I became revolted at the severe violation of human rights, the lack of equality and the blatant hatred of those who didn’t believe in Allah and Muhammad. The final nail in the coffin, was the fear I had being a disbeliever and then engaging with other ExMuslims and seeing that they were just normal, happy people and that gave me the confidence to finally leave Islam. What sect of Islam does your family follow? Sunni On a scale of Zayn Malik (1) to ISIS (15) what is their level of religiosity? 12
Do your family/friends know and if so, how did they react? In my family its just my parents and siblings that know. My father is in denial because he just can’t comprehend anyone leaving Islam and my mother she wasn’t really surprised however she did try to lecture me. Muslims friends, I don’t really associate much with now but the ones that I do have are aware and accepting. What has been one of the biggest challenges you have faced being an Open ExMuslim? I think perhaps one of the biggest challenges is that I am no longer able to have a functioning relationship with my immediate family. Do you have any words of advice for fellow ExMuslims? Don’t put others happiness before your own. Always know that you are only living once, so live your life that way you would want to live it. You can reach Farah on twitter @eastmigrant

Why is it when I make a post talking about Islam, people start yammering on “Catholics did this too”, “Christians are the same”, etc..
I’m not talking about what Catholics/Christians did or didn’t do, I’m talking about Islam. The religion that I grew up in. The religion that told me I am worth half a man. The religion that told me I am forbidden to talk to men. The religion that told me I had to wear a hijab/niqab. The religion that told me I must obey my husband. The religion that told me I am cursed if I refuse to have sex with my husband. The religion that filled me with despair and depression. The religion that destroyed ever ounce of my self identity. The religion that made me feel as though my worth was only my hymen.
Atheism is a process. You dont have a magical moment or a sudden change of heart. The world doesn’t stop spinning, the puzzle piece doesn’t magically fit into place, you can’t pinpoint a moment of paradigm shift.
Its nights of praying and wondering if someone is out there even listening and that shocks you because there used to be no doubt about it before.
Its sometimes months of praying for a sign, its reading research and scriptures to see if maybe you’re wrong and misguided as your scripture and your parents told you.
Even when you identify as an atheist for months a lingering doubt may be present in your mind from your upbringing. A near death experience may make you fear you’re off to hell because you really were wrong.
But then one of those days is a very ordinary day you realise all that seems foolish. Death doesn’t seem so daunting anymore and you can’t seem to remember when you discarded your belief in “the perils of the grave”. One of those days you sit in a hospital lobby praying for a loved one and you realise you know deep inside no one out there is listening.
Its a process and you dont know when the wheels turned, when the wind shifted. It just did and you’re a whole new person because of it. After that, after that point of realisation, return is truly impossible.
I was chatting with a fellow exmuslim who attended a local Muslim school and I mentioned the “Period Room”. The Period Room was a place that Muslim girls had to go to when Dhur prayers were being held. The teachers would check off all girls who were coming in and if your period went over 7 days or if you had periods close together they would accuse you of lying and demand proof. Not to mention everybody would know when you were on your period.
This was happening in a school in Australia which was receiving government funding.
When you call an exmuslim islamophobic, you are silencing a victim of oppression and defending their oppressors.

When converts try to tell what the "real" Islam is.... you know the Islam you lived for your whole life...
Making an exmuslim podcast message if interested!

Exmuslim Community Critique
So many of the same old bigots without the fairy tails.
Imagine if someone handed you a box full of all the items you have lost throughout your life
#it would be nice to get my sense of purpose back
“Oh wow my childhood innocence! Thank you for finding this,”
“my will to live! i haven’t seen this in 15 years!”
“I knew I lost that potential somewhere!”
“Mental stability, my old friend!”
