this post is not a guilt-trip aimed at people who are non-straight and/or non-cis but donât identify as queer. nor is this post is saying that âqueerâ was never a slur, or that âqueerâ isnât still used as a slur.Â
the contested early history of the word âqueerâ in reference to non-straight-non-cis identities aside*, the word âqueerâ was used so ubiquitously as a slur in the US that LGBT+ activist group Queer Nation set out to reclaim it from their attackers by proudly taking the word as their identity label. (it defanged the word âqueerâ so well that by the late 1990â˛s, US colleges had âQueer Historyâ and âQueer Studiesâ courses.)
Of course: the reclamation work by Queer Nation was not universal. their activism was limited to the US, for one thing, and not everyone liked what they were doing. Queer Nation reacted to being called âqueerâ belligerently and angrily, taking the word away from bigots, but this doesnât delegitimize reacting by never wanting to hear the word âqueerâ used to reference you again. yes: the word âqueerâ is still used in a hurtful way, just like âgayâ is. And besides all this: itâs a legitimate decision to reject âqueerâ as your identity for any reason, not just because of bad experiences.
youâre not supporting TERFs by saying âI donât like the word âqueerâ being applied to meâ, or âthe word âqueerâ has been used as a slur against me and I donât like it.â like other identities in the Pride community (such as âgayâ and variants on âtransâ), âqueerâ has a history of being used to hurt us. thatâs legit. youâre legit.
this post is not aimed at you. Itâs not aimed at anyone making a personal statement of their identity and preferred labels.
this post is aimed at the phrase âqueer is a slurâ and the culture of censorship that sprang up around it, which has been used repeatedly (particularly on Tumblr) to shut down any and all posts that reference the âqueer communityâ, anyone who proudly calls themselves âqueerâ, the use of the word âqueerâ without censoring it to âq slurâ, and more since 2013-ish.
itâs aimed at the popular nonintersectional radical feminist tumblr bloggers (who are at the very least sympathetic to the TERFs and SWERFs in their ranks) who popularized and spread the belief that âqueerâ is only a slur, never a legitimate identity, because they hate the queer identity existing.Â
(and why do they hate it? because Radfems/TERFs/SWERFs believe the queer identity is a form of violence specifically against (cis) lesbians. In the eyes of radfems, âqueerâs lack of specificity prevents (cis) lesbians from explicitly identifying as lesbian and lets their âoppressorsâ (read: men, trans women, non-straight-non-cis ppl with kinks, etc) have access to their âsafe spaceâ.)
In fact: allowing âqueerâ to be a legitimate identity makes it difficult to gatekeep the LG(BT)** spaces radfems wish to control & police. But despite being only motivated by the desire to kick out/kick down everyone in Pride who isnât a (cis) lesbian, radfems/terfs/swerfs sure were (and are!) perfectly happy to make it sound like they believe âqueerâ is a deeply harmful word to the whole community of Pride - used only as a slur, and claimed as an identity only by âcishet invadersâ pretending to be one of the Cool LGs.
thus: radfems on tumblr erase(d) the work of Queer Nation and other activists to reclaim the word âqueerâ from bigots. and when anyone reminds tumblr of the reclamation work from decades past, black&white-thinking tumblr is quick to react with what amounts to: âbecause some people who could reclaim âqueerâ for themselves have chosen not to, it has never been reclaimed at all, by anyone - and you cannot reclaim it for yourself.â because itâs true - there are many people who have chosen to not reclaim âqueerâ even though they could, for many different reasons.Â
but as I said in the OP post: the experiences & statements of people who, like you, have chosen to not id as queer, are being CO-OPTED by radfems/terfs/swerfs.
using the deceptive, easy-to-remember slogan âqueer is a slurâ as a disseminating agent, radfems/terfs/swerfs have essentially STOLEN your personal story to âproveâ their bullshit narrative that âqueer is a slur and only a slurâ - something you & others who donât reclaim âqueerâ are not even close to saying!
this post isnât saying non-straight, non-cis people who donât claim âqueerâ are supporting TERFs.
itâs saying that TERFs are STEALING from you to damage the unity of Pride - a community that we are ALL a part of. (and thatâs NOT YOUR FAULT, but we should all be aware thatâs happening.)
*at a conference I attended recently, an expert historian said gay men called themselves âqueerâ in the 1910â˛s, & thatâs the first time the word pops up in English in reference to non-straightness. it was turned on non-straight-non-cis people over the following decades.
**obviously TERFs would kick the âTâ out in a heartbeat, but a lot of lesbian-identified radfems would also kick out the âBâ. Bi people only âcountâ if theyâre âchoosing to be lesbian/gayâ, or theyâre a âbihetâ. (and yes, thatâs as biphobic and nb-phobic as it sounds.)
