"Would you change your class?"
"Change it... hm. Assuming it's possible?"
"Yeah, assume you get a drop down menu in front of you right now, with all the stat info and abilities and all that good classic RPG shit, would you lock in prince? Or change it up?"
"I suppose it'd be only logical to check everything out, see where my role stacks up against others." Dirk shifted on the roof next to him, resting his hands over his belly.
"But I think I like what I got. It was tailor made with me in mind, right? Maybe that means only I could do it well, or at all, maybe it means it's an occasion I have to rise to. I don't know, I think I like it."
"Not even if it meant changing your silly tiara and goofy ass poofy pants?"
"Nah." Dave could hear the smile in his voice. "I told you before, I think I kinda like 'em."
"Yeah, yeah you told me."
"What class would you change to?"
"Why do you think I would want to change?"
"Why else would you bring up the hypothetical? Obviously, you've given this some thought, and I'm asking. You can tell me, what class would you wannt be?"
Dave stared up at the stars, the cloudless night was like an infinite, midnight blue blanket. It was warm out, the summer air settling a deep calm into his bones, and he wasn't sure where his skin ended and the air began. A shooting star blinked across the sky, but Dave didn't even blink, he knew his days of worrying about meteors were over.
"I dunno. That's just it. I don't know if I even really see myself as anything but myself."
"I think I wanna feel like I can be anything, like I don't have shit holding me back and keeping me right where I am, but deep down I know that this Knight shit was for a reason. And I definitely would not risk fucking up by changing shit now."
It was silent for a bit after he said that, and Dave let it go. He knew his bro was just thinking over what he said, trying to find the right thing to say, Good Big Brother style. Dave wasn't even really sure what he was trying to confess, but it'd been rumbling in his brain awhile, bumping into things and breaking the fine china. His head was in shambles, but maybe his bro knew a thing or two about identity, it made talking about it less stressful, anyway.
"Dave." Dirk's voice sounded hesitant, and it made Dave's heart thud in his chest. "You know you can be whoever you wanna be, right?"
"Yeah... yeah I know." His mouth was dry.
They didn't talk about anything else for the rest of the night, falling asleep on their rooftop, a canopy of stars glimmering away above them. The moon rose and glowed softly, but they slept until the daylight, only waking when dawn's fingers stretched over the horizon.
