Shwmae! Diolch for your message, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to put my Fun Police hat on for a while.

Usually, if you've been told a funny-sounding or cutesy word means <insert word here> in Welsh, you've very likely been misinformed.

While it sounds harmless (and most people genuinely believe in these words innocently, like I'm sure you do, anon!), it's still misinformation, and is in fact the very opposite of harmless, despite its cutesiness. Call it a fun byproduct of the Welsh language being treated as a punching bag by English speakers, baby!

"Popty ping", "pysgodyn wibli wobli", "ffrothi coffi" are all nonsense terms that maybe started out as an inside joke or funny playground terms, but have since escaped cointainment and gone viral because they feed the English-speaking notion that the Welsh language sounds stupid.

Next time you hear a funny-sounding Welsh term (or any term from another language, particularly a marginalised one), ask yourself these two questions:
