Something I really liked about Mickey 17 was how human everyone was. Like, people stuttered and didn't always finish their thoughts, assholes live to be assholes another day, there were conflicting political opinions throughout the colonists, there were arguments on the loading docks about parking and people sharing food. It felt like those were real people, and it paid off at the end when there were multiple people working to get mister-wannabe-dictator to stop. Like! Yeah reasonable people Would try to bring these people to trial and work to communicate with aliens and vote to get rid of a body printer because these are People! It was just a nice touch, and also made sense for how Mickey is very much Not a hero, he's just a guy trying to live his life. Everyone's just trying to live their life, so everyone contributes to solving the problems.
One of the details that will never fail to make me cry about Mickey 17 is how it emphasizes the importance of anger. How it dives into the idea where the working class sacrifices so much of its humanity for companies that will never give a damn. For them, it's just a money grab, but for us, it's our livelihood.
Sometimes, you need someone to be angry for you, someone to give you a wake-up call, someone to show you that you are more important than your service to capitalism.
And the fact that Mickey (18) reminded himself (17) of that each time just makes me sob. I read somewhere long ago that anger sometimes can be our consciousness reminding us that we've been treated unfairly/unjustly.
and it is okay to embrace it. to not let us consume us, but to let it drive us towards change.
be like mickey.
and she’s so real for that

thinking sooo hard about Mickey being like “i pushed a button and it ruined my FUCKING LIFE”
and then at the end, 18 pushed a button to end his life and 17 pushed a button to destroy the printer and start living again
I love movies bout guys in space who don’t want to be there
going into mickey 17: hehe yay Steven Yeun!!! omg im so excited to watch Robert Pattinson play a little weirdo again wahoo!!!
leaving mickey 17: We need to explode Donald Trump.
everyone has been saying nasha was the only person to not ask mickey what it was like to die, but no one is making the connection that she didn’t have to ask bc she already knew. on presumably 3 or 4 occasions, nasha held him as he died an agonizing, horrid death. she was the only person who even thought to give him comfort in those moments. she’d never ask him how it felt, she knows.

need to string together my thoughts more on this but reeeeeally interesting to see the influx of media - severance, the substance, mickey 17 - centered on the idea of a double/expendable iteration of yourself.
the dehumanization of workers by the way of non-livable wages, unsafe working conditions, and identity based discrimination (and the current removal of dei initiatives), all drive a wedge between our personhood and the value we are prescribed as a member of the workforce. something something the effects of ai and deepfakes already putting people in danger, the way we live and present our lives online vs in reality, there’s a lot to unpack here. but it’s fascinating to see this trope so widely translated as a storytelling vehicle for these ideas, and that this is the story that people are interested in telling.
the fact that sex played such a huge role in Mickey 17 isn't just a fun hot little addition to a good movie about antifascism - it's intrinsic.
They want your sexuality repressed unless you're procreating the "right kind" of babies.
Nasha wants Mickey to be able to grow old with her so that she can suck him off for the rest of her god damned life. Nasha wants to know the name of every sexual position so intimately that her sopping wet boyfriend and her can use the names as a secret code in public. Nasha wants to have sex to feel ALIVE and full of joy. Nasha is going to break federal law to have a threesome with her boyfriend and his clone and she's gonna be high as a fucking kite when she does it. Sexual expression IS resisting fascism because the joy of fucking connects us and gives us something to fight for. Nasha is a hero and her sexuality is intrinsic to it.
nasha was THE highlight of Mickey 17 she actually felt like a character and not just the demure, loving girlfriend, she was messy and jealous and obsessive and it was such a fun watch, like she was literally this

nasha barridge is the character of all time. she's a firefighter and a security guard and a martial artist. she loves her pathetic ass boyfriend more than anyone. dating two clones at once isn't a dealbreaker for her. she can snap a fascist's neck with her legs while holding onto a rope with her teeth. she breaks down giggling over doodles of stick figures having sex. she starts a riot in the cafeteria to defend her boyfriend from bullies. she's stayed with her boyfriend while he dies more than once. she's compassionate and wise and supportive and also jealous and hotheaded and messy. and she's in space!
