Wednesday, 3 April 2024 11am Pacific ~ online via Zoom
Join us for an orientation on our upcoming (and first!) annual pagan-informed domestic violence certification training, happening this summer. This discovery call will explain more about what to expect, what it does and doesn't offer, how it contributes to our directory of DV-certified spiritual service providers, and how to get involved.
More details + Zoom info: houseofapples.org/events
Emain Ablach, the Isle of Apples.
A land of yew trees and swans, it is said that a young Lugh spent part of his fosterage in this bountiful isle.
Part of a new series of illustrations exploring the many names for Tír na nÓg (also this month's patreon postcard! so sign up if you'd like one! I draw a different thing from Irish mythology & folklore every month!)
Can’t agree more about that duolingo post you shared, the Irish course is *terrible*. Do you have any recommendations for other places to go to learn Irish for someone with practically no knowledge of the language?
dublin city university has asynchronous courses that run regularly on futurelearn, starting with irish 101 and going up to 208 (you might have to wait a little while for 101 to come around again because they don't all run simultaneously). they're a pretty good intro with more grammar explanations, written exercises, etc. my biggest issue with them was motivating myself to actually put the time in, because i found it tough to get through all the course in the amount of time i had available to give to them, but they're probably the best free online resource i know of, especially because they do have people there to answer questions and explain grammar
there are also various online courses on zoom etc but those tend to cost money. i do think after a certain point it's worth trying to get in an actual class (in person or online) for the conversation practice if nothing else, but something like the futurelearn courses is a good stepping stone to get going
for pure vocab, memrise has so far not fallen as far down the hole of "gamification of language apps at the expense of actual teaching" and you can make custom courses to learn vocab that you yourself actually need (e.g. lists from courses you're taking), but i know memrise is trying to push a new version of their "official" courses which may end up being at the expense of "community" courses (custom lists) so idk how long that'll last, and anyway it's more of a supplement to learning elsewhere than a way to learn in and of itself, in my experience
Cultúrlann uí Chanáin is a group based in Derry that has beginner, intermediate, and advanced podcast lessons freely available. They also have online- and in-person courses starting every few months.
The book series Gaeilge gan stró is also a great resource to work through at your own pace and comes with CDs of audio exercises. (though one copy I got from the library had some scratches so I missed out on a few of those exercises)
I also like to watch programmes on TG4 (variety of programmes) and Cúla4 (childrens). I like to watch Cúla4 with Irish subtitles to practice reading and pronunciation, and TG4 with English subtitles to learn new vocab.
thanks for sharing! here's a link to the culturlann podcast series for those who'd like it
while we're on the subject of podcasts/audio learning, here's raidió fáilte's "foghlaim" playlist, which includes the audio for the buntus cainte course (but ulster irish rather than the one you'd typically get on the CD with it)
also here's a site with the "irish on your own" / now you're talking course from the 1990s. this starts from first steps.
the original focus here was for beginner learners and higher intermediate/advanced learners probably know where to find their resources, but while i'm here i'll point youse towards céim ar aghaidh if you've an ulster irish interest, has audio/video elements with PDFs and exercises to do
A quick note, from someone who has done the Cultúrlann uí Chanáin podcast series: They're teaching the Ulster dialect so there are a few more differences from the other two main dialects. I started learning Irish with it years ago but I didn't use that one for very long. It's just something I wasn't aware of going in that would have been good to know for seeing things from multiple sources.
yeah all of the links above are ulster irish bc that's what i've learned so that's what all my resources are lol

VD: Museum curator Wendy Nālani E. Ikemoto next to a display of a Plague Doctor mask and headdress.
She says "what are we looking at here. This is a work called “Resilience: Living in a Pandemic since 1492” by Osceola and Genevieve Red Shirt who conceived of the work in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic. It features a leather plague doctor's mask inscribed with the names of diseases that have devastated Indigenous nations through history. Caption reads "Smallpox, Diphtheria, Spanish Flu, Covid-19.
Wendy says "these are overlaid with Indigenous medicinal plants. The mask is paired with a war bonnet to honor Indigenous people as survivors and warriors" /End VD
Additional description of the work: The medicinal plants are: Marsh Marigold (yellow); Pokeweed (cone shape with purple berries); Purple Coneflower (lavender color with orange center); Skunk Cabbage (burgundy with bright green).
The work is made from: Wicket and Craig tooling leather, glass, metal, sweet grass, thread, hand-painted imitation eagle feathers, ermine pelts, red wool, red horsehair, buckskin leather, re-purposed Buffalo felt hat.

The best piece of advice I ever got was not meant as advice, but as an edict. If I was going to threaten people as a joke, it had to be so far out of proportion with what happened that it would be obvious I was joking. This changed how I expressed frustration with others. It then changed how I expressed frustration with myself.
Not “I’m going to hit you” but “I am going to buy a tuna sub from the gas station and hide it under the seat of your car”
Not “I’m going to kill myself” but “I am going to walk into the desert and let the scarabs take me”
The other side then happened. When I mess something up, instead of saying it’s bad and perpetuating negative thoughts, swing hard the other way.
Not “this art is terrible” but “this shall be framed and mounted on the wall in my museum exhibition as testament to the suffering I had to overcome”
Have been doing this since high school. It was my drama teacher who asked me to please stop scaring the actors. The other half of the edict was that I had to say it in a polite tone, and end it with either please or thank you.
Life changing. 10/10 Mr Muëller. Highly reccomend.
lol

Which means you saw this, could have told me, but instead, you chose this course. You chose violence. I'll be adding you to the list of traitors to be embroidered in the tapestry of my throne room.

doomscrolling is not activism
doomscrolling is not activism
doomscrolling is not activism
"don't look away" is a meaningless phrase. who are you benefiting by inundating yourself with misery porn?
DO something about things you care about. Go to a protest for something you believe in, if you can. Donate money to a cause if you have it to spare. Volunteer your time to help people if you have the energy. Write a letter to your political representatives if that's something you can do. These are meaningful ways to try to make change in the world.
And then? don't feel bad about insulating yourself from horrible news. Don't make yourself look at images that make you feel sick. Don't read endless things that depress you. Because frankly it gets harder to actually do the more you doomscroll. Reading constantly about things you can't change because they're happening at a systemic level or on the other side of the world is paralyzing. It makes you less able to help where you can.
I'm not saying be willfully ignorant. I'm not saying pretend horrible things aren't happening. I'm saying don't destroy your mental health going in-depth and cycling through horror after horror on your phone. I'm saying there is no virtue in making yourself experience other people's traumas because mere awareness is not activism. you inflicting suffering on yourself is not activism.
doomscrolling is literally sapping your energy and focus away from doing anything useful to help other people. you can burn yourself out without ever lifting a finger by exposing yourself to all the bad news in the world and who does that help? no one.

"Elk Centaur" by Francois Lelong
Stevens Point Sculpture Park, Wisconsin, USA
Would tbh
This probably sounds obvious, but I learned today that prisoners aren't protected by OSHA regulations, and that this is another reason why employers are so eager to utilize this modern slavery. It's only a couple cents an hour, less transportation costs than the overseas sweatshops, and if you want people to work with hazardous materials without proper training? That's fine too! Prison labor is the ultimate free market solution!
If you want to really change the world, prisoner rights and prison reform is the way to go. Removing the ability of the ruling class to effectively punish the population frees everyone to challenge them in meaningful ways. Arbitrary violence and incarceration is how they keep people scared and divided. There is no crime in our society that isn't generated by our society. Even the worst ones you can think of.
Prisoner rights are human rights. Prison abolition is mass freedom.

Join the MCRCC team for a crucial and enlightening webinar taking place in January, which is Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and one of our semi-local organizations is providing a free public webinar about what it is, what it isn't, separating fact from myth, and info about resources and options.
I received my sexual assault counseling training from this organization and have provided domestic violence training for their own advocates in return, so I have experience with this org and feel good recommending it. :D
