The thing about Rory (besides being generally great) is, heās a nurse. and literally the first scene we see of him he is having his ā extremely real and serious and legitimate! ā concerns brushed off by a doctor.
ā¦so no wonder Rory is such a good counterbalance to Amyās near-worship in his dynamic with the Doctor.
Not only is he inoculated by experience against any tendency to glorification, heās also probably very used to calling doctors out and being disregarded⦠and still trying anyway, because integrity demands it, and staying around to do his part even when nobody will listen to him, and trying again next time.
Heās exceptionally qualified to be the companion who actually recognizes and honestly calls out the Doctorās BS, and he does it, and have I mentioned that Rory is great?!?
Friendly reminder that the trainings were not transmitted in the districts so D12 citizens never got to see Maysilee selflessly help other tributesn and she died still a stuck up girl in their eyes. They did not know she spent hours decorating other kids tokens when she could have practicing her skills.
They did not get to see her biggest act of resistance against the Capitol -killing the gamemaker- either, so she did not become a martyr for a cause.
And while Wyatt might have scored a few points in d12s eyes for trying to protect Louella (at least they thought it was Louella), they did not know it was not Louella. They could not see the extent of care Wyatt showed for Lou Lou and the trust shehas given him. For them he was still a loner in life and therefore his last act was not a continuation of the entire arc of his life but an once-in-a-lifetime act that happened to be his last
i point blank refuse to believe the twelfth doctor was a professor for like seventy years in modern higher ed, dude. even if the university let him do whatever he wanted (universities do this, you just gotta plonk your big grant or award on the table. or like run their revenue generating journal.), even then, you think this fucker sat down and graded papers? you think he answered emails begging for extensions? you think he HAS an institutional email like thedoctor at stluke dot ac dot uk??? be for fucking real. look me in the eye and tell me he's been to a single departmental meeting.

Freshly hijacked Peeta was confused about nights on the train but he must have been just as confused about the not shiny memory of Finnick kissing him in the arena.
I find it hilarious to imagine Peeta having a similar "What are we?" conversation with Finnick.
Effie is even more repressed and unable to express her feelings than Haymitch send post
ājust a bunch of loose cannons.ā
our district 12 tributes in THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING (Teaser) (2026)
beetee latier came up with one singular plan ever to defeat the hunger games and canonically tried to make it work TWICE despite the fact that it literally blew up in his face the first time.
this officially makes him the worldās most accurate fictional scientist because he HAS a favorite hypothesis that he IS going to make sure works even if it fucking kills him
Suzanne Collins just said fuck you to everyone whoās ever critiqued the Hunger Games as being a āteen girl saves the dayā story. She said oh, Mockingjay didnāt make it clear enough? Hereās a book about how people have been rebelling for decades only to have their efforts suppressed and propagandized. Rebellion takes time and it takes failure and Katniss may have been the spark that ignited the wildfire but she did so standing atop the doused flames of everyone who came before her.

propaganda im not falling for: peeta mellark is a soft, innocent cinnamon roll pacifist who doesnāt have a mean bone in his body and never kills anyone on purpose bc heās too pure for this world
WRONG
yes, heās kind and sweet and caring and loving. but he has a darkness in him too. in cf, he has a meltdown in the attic in d11 and literally starts throwing shit cos heās so upset about katniss and haymitch keeping secrets from him again. we donāt see it very often pre-hijacking cos heās soft for katniss, but that boy has a temper.
he straight up tells katniss himself that heās just as fucked up as haymitch, but itās easier for him to wake up with a paintbrush in his hand than a knife.
letās not ignore the fact that he voluntarily challenged catoāfucking catoāin hand-to-hand combat so that katniss could escape. in cf, itās highly implied that he kills brutus too whilst minimally armed and running through the jungle in the dark bc brutus (being the fool he is) gets in the way of peeta reaching katniss.
mind you, this is all before the hijacking.
people take one look at the fact that he got through the first games by only making one known direct kill himselfāwhich is widely viewed as just putting a girl out of her miseryāand that he said he didnāt want to be a piece in their games, but they donāt take into account literally anything else about him.
he challenged arguably the most powerful opponent in their games without hesitation and armed with a weapon heās unfamiliar with the second he became a real threat against the girl he loves, and later assisted in his actual death. we also donāt actually know if he killed anyone else when he was with the careers, nor do we know how he managed to prove himself to them (i personally reckon there may be another kill or two that we donāt know about).
not only that, but he also spends several days laying in the mud and dying, as well as several more dying of sepsis in a cave. i fear itās incredibly obvious weāre not getting Peak Fighter Peetaā¢ļø, so his lack of kills as narrated by katniss after 2/3 of the tributes are already dead isnāt very representative of his skill OR his willingness to fight/kill.
peeta is a badass with suppressed rage, and he is not afraid to unleash it when someone threatens him and/or katniss. i will die on this hill.
Re-reading The Hunger Games trilogy made me realize how much Peeta acted as a mentor in his first Games rather than a typical tribute.
Yes, he played to the cameras and mused on morality but he understood the bigger picture of the Games and knew there was a strong chance he wouldnāt make it home.
So what did he do? He orchestrated a plan with Haymitch to keep Katniss alive. We know getting into the Careersā pack doesnāt just happen in the arena, it happens off-camera, through strategy and quiet agreements, likely discussed with Haymitch.
The confession during the interview, while genuine, was also an elaborate plan to secure Katnissās safety even after his death. He's smart, and he understood how the Games worked, not just in terms of physical skill, but in optics, sponsorships, and narrative. He did everything he could to guarantee her survival.
Thatās why it felt confusing when he discovered the whole star-crossed lovers arc was ājust an actā on the train, especially since he was the one who initiated it. But then again, he had just come out of the arena, and at the end of the day, he was still a sixteen-year-old boy.
It just clicked for me how little he behaved like a tribute, and how much he functioned like a mentor working alongside Haymitch to make sure Katniss got out alive.
Comparing Haymitch and Katniss' narrative styles is so funny to me because he's a yapper and she's a gatekeeper. He drops more lore on D12 in the first two chapters of SOTR than she does in the entire trilogy.
Haymitch is like "Yeah, so this person is related to this person who's related to this person and things are this way because of this and this thing actually came from here and this person is actually my best friend and also here's this extra tidbit of random info cause all my lore dropping comes with it's own additional bonus content and all my unnecessary commentary."
And Katniss is over here like "Tf do I care for if y'all know all the lore of District 12? I'm talking about my beautiful husband's beautiful eyelashes."
i canāt wait to watch haymitch abernathy chug a gallon of milk just so he can tell president snow that thereās no milk on the big screen
Thinking about how the entire Hunger Games Trilogy, we see so much similarity between Katniss and Haymitch. Then, we read Sunrise on the Reaping and see how Haymitch used to be so much like Peeta š„ŗ I'm violently throwing up

silence in the library/forest of the dead is so delightfully fucked up. world's most suicidal man tries to kill himself to save the library and then a woman he barely knows who claims to be important to him in the future chains him up and fries herself to a crisp in front of him. he will be haunted by her dying face for the rest of his lives when all he wanted to do was die himself.
I think one of the reasons I love Bill so much is that sheās just so human, sheās really just a random person the doctor met. Before her we had Amy who had the crack in her wall that followed them around and altered time and Clara who was the impossible girl, but Bill was just someone who showed up to the doctors classes because they seemed interesting, sheās not special in the grander scheme of the universe, but sheās special because sheās the doctors friend
