Essentially the Charms can create a temporary shield. They are nerfed by needing to be activated to work and recharged after use. So the characters can rationally go "I'm getting upset, let me safeguard against this", but they can also get hit by sudden upsets and not have the time/presence of mind to set it up and still be vulnerable.

So this chapter happened very much earlier which is why it's chapter 6 and not chaper 40-whatever but the ability to add earlier scenes has given me too much power
