Coraline Jonesย is based onย Coralineย fromย Coraline. They are aย 27ย year oldย gifted human,ย movie theater attendant, and usesย they/themย pronouns. They have the power ofย dimension jumping. Coraline is portrayed byย Lizeth Selene.
coraline has always been someone who liked to think outside of the box. while most kids wanted to fit in and play by the rules, coraline wanted to do anything but that. it started fairly young; dying their hair blue, wearing funky socks, running off to the woods to pretend to search for scary secrets. it was all for the sake of entertainment and the way they felt like a five leaf clover amongst four leaf ones.
coraline's parents were never really around much. they had their jobs that they loved and sometimes it felt like they loved those jobs more than they loved coraline. their mother was an editor for some plant magazine and their father wrote said articles for that magazine. a match made in heaven with coraline as the odd one out. when they got old enough to move out they did and they don't really talk to them much these days. it just....brings up weird memories that they don't know how to deal with.
in some ways, they didn't think they would have discovered their gift without the neglect that plagued their childhood, but at the same time coraline feels like meeting ofelya was destined. they were 17 at the time and it was purely accidental blinking themselves into the other evermore and at first....it was exactly everything they dreamed of! there was so much to do and it felt like every little thing that existed in this other evermore was made to cater to them. eventually they would learn that was all ofelya.
ofelya had the sweet talk down and coraline practiced going back and forth between the two dimensions, embracing it, having the time of their life, even. until ofelya told them the price they had to pay to stay in that other dimension permanently. coraline doesn't like to get into it but....it's bad. really bad. and they haven't been back to the other evermore since. they were grateful they had the practice if anything because it kept them from accidentally hopping dimensions but they were pretty fucked up from the entire experience.
the thing that shocked them the most about adjusting back into evermore was the time that had passed with the dimension jumping. by the time they had cut it all off they were 20. in a lot of ways they felt like they lost the most important few years of their life by doing what they did, but they would have never had gotten to know the truth of it all without that time.
the only person in their life that didn't think they were crazy about the other evermore was their longterm friend (only friend) wybie. maybe it was because wybie was just as weird as coraline (if not weirder in their opinion) but coraline is grateful to have one person to not dismiss their claims.
these days coraline doesn't sleep much. they have nightmares about ofelya and their experience in the other evermore. to cope, they smoke a lot. being high is better than being asleep and they have learned that smoking seemed to block the gift a little bit. made it a little harder to tap into that power in their brain or whatever.
another way they cope is through movies. getting lost in fantasy is a lot easier than dealing with real life bullshit and honestly getting a job at the movie theater kinda saved their life in some ways. they could talk about movies for hours. their letterboxd is a safe space to them.
they are super into horror even though they think life is a horror. they honestly enjoy trying to scare themselves because they don't get scared very easily these days. only when they think they are looking into the eyes of a person with buttons for eyes underneath the fake complexion used to blend into the real evermore. basically anything that gives them remotely uncanny valley vibes scares the fuck out of them.
a big fan of conspiracy theories and the supernatural. despite the trauma they like knowing what they could be up against in the future now that they've seen the downside of things.
they have a soft spot for cats. when they were younger they couldn't stand the felines and now...well they kinda get them in a way people don't. they have a black cat named cat and no they will not elaborate why they named their cat...cat.
sometimes they think about going back to school....they are pretty sure they finished high school so college? yeah they think about college. even though they have no idea what they want to do with their life and what the future could hold given the circumstances with the other evermore.
speaking of, they are aware that people from the other evermore are trickling into this dimension. they have no clue what to do with that. they have no clue how to help. all they can really do right now is warn people when they are close. telling the other people too much could go straight back to ofelya. and no one wants that.
tattoos are another form of coping with the terrors of life. they have a decent amount. actually they are covered decently well with them. they like the feeling of getting them done.
when it comes to relationships with other people...their social skills are at a negative two. they are incredibly blunt and people think they are being mean when they aren't. still...they still like having people to talk to. when it comes to relationships....oh they don't even try for that. casual arrangements are made here and there but never enough for them to get to know coraline. at least...not most of them.
as much as they don't like being like their parents...they actually really love gardening. but they love to actually garden (not write about it) and get dirty and just....lose time to it.
