“I think we already know why - you need to stop looking those up.” 

“Just because you think they’re supposed to be scary doesn’t mean they are.” He could rattle off things that can make a raptor cute, easy-.. and it wasn’t just him being terrifyingly optimistic. He just liked being right. “And of all people, I don’t think you should be telling kids what and what not to think about dinosaurs. That is the point of having them learn about them, make their own discoveries and opinions and all that. Let the raptor be cute.”

“I don’t think they have to be scary,” Paloma objected - that wasn’t the point, but it was true. She loved the raptors. “The problem is when they think they’re a passing cute.We could sell super cute, maybe. Baby deer and lion cute we can market, it’s harder with raptors. They’ll get tired of them if they’re not - amazing in some way, and are reduced to cute.” she tried to explain, frowning to herself. Even a passing consideration of a raptor petting zoo was distressful. They’d eat the kids up. “We can’t set up a petting zoo like we do with the stegosaurus - my boss just worked hard on this marketing for it to fall through with our focus groups.”

Javian figured that getting a pet would help ease his nephew while they both got use to their new living arrangements. As his nephew stood, watching the stray dogs with excitement, Javian gave the tent attendant a warm smile before mimicking their movements. “How old is he?,” he asked, allowing the Doberman to sniff the back of his hand. “Good boy,” he chuckled, moving to scratch the back of the dog’s ear. 

“Here’s hoping a miracle happens. Timmy and company die laughing when I change my voice during the Albus Severus speech. There is nothing better than hearing them laugh after all the horrid shit some of those kids have gone through. Wait— you’re not serious, are you?”

Myah was usually the one that had to read to the kids during volunteer events, so she was excited to hear the guest’s  voices and take on the book. “Well, let’s see what you’ve got,” she replied, a grin on her face. “Yeah, I’m serious, I just never got into them - I was a Goosebumps girl.” Myah gave a half shrug - people were always surprised that she hadn’t read the series.

“Do you? Because from the way you were touching that pillow, it seemed like you were checking it for lead poisoning.”

“It looked flat, I was just puffing it up,” Myah explained with a light sigh. “I’m just not used to sleeping in new places, okay?” 

“Oh, sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” No matter who you are, having someone lurking around and sneaking up on you in the middle of the night was definitely scary. However, Javian had no ill intent and instead wanted to hurry up so that he could get back home to his nephew and relieve the babysitter of her duties. “I’m just trying to find my kid’s stuffed animal.” There was no need to get into detail about how the kid wasn’t his actual kid– his mission was clear and precise. “You haven’t seen a blue octopus thing lying around here, have you? His sitter took him here earlier and I guess he dropped it?” With his iPhone’s flashlight shining on the ground, Javian felt helpless. “He can’t sleep without it.”

Luz was so busy looking around through her camera’s screen that she hadn’t noticed the man walking nearby. His sudden appearance made her jump in her skin, but she smiled as she whirled around to see his face. “It’s okay, I was distracted,” she reassured him, her smile falling a bit at the story. “Oh, damn - no, I haven’t seen one. I’ve been recording this whole time, but I wasn’t really looking at the ground.” She cut her video short and set her phone away, pulling a flashlight from her pocket to help. “Do you know where he usually likes to play? If it fell in the sand it could be lost for good - but if he just left it in one of the tubes it shouldn’t be too hard  to find?” 

“There’s nothing wrong with being cute. It is the God tier of compliments.” Any compliment is God tier for him, but still. “It’s the holiest of all physical compliments. You are something to be cared for, held, and cherish. Unless you say it like ‘oh you’re so cute’. Which makes you an ass.” He’s chewing but stops once he brings him brows together. “That answers the question, I’m sure.”

Paloma nodded at his comments - because they were true, when it came to humans. She loved it when people called her cute, for example, and there was nothing wrong with calling men cute in a non disparaging way. But that didn’t really apply to dinosaurs. “I mean, we love it when they call the triceratops or the even the brontosauruses cute, but - the raptors are supposed to be scary,” she explained, a frown on her face. “Even if they were trying to be nice, we’re gonna have a problem if even the kids think they’re just cute.” 

“I don’t mean to offend, but I’m actually here for the books. I’ve got a couple of coworkers who’d probably get off my back if I dug up a treasure for ‘em in here.”

“Hey, that doesn’t offend me - this is my job, and the donations help. The used books are over here.” Myah gestured to the small shelves and ushered them over. “We’ve got an inventory list if you’re looking for something specific.” 

“Like the pokemon?” If there was something Carlton knew, it was Pokemon. All thanks to his nephews, he was almost an expert. Carefully, he held his hand out for the dog to sniff. “Fitting name for this one. My sister got the kids a cat and they decided to name him Bulbasaur. Poor bastard.”

“The Pokemon?” River’s eyes widened and they gave the dog a puzzled look, as if he’d know more than them. As if the dog had failed to let them know this information. “There’s a Pokemon with that name?” they asked, grinning at them both. River did know Bulbasaur. “Oh...well, is he a Bulbasaur type cat? Unless he’s green, that’s maybe not the best fit. Kids are funny...” they commented, a warm smile on their face as Houndour nuzzled and sniffed at the stranger’s hand. “Oh - I’m River.” 

Julian tapped his fingers on the table in a scattered beat. “Got any sex books?”

Myah’s mouth dropped open and she shook her head fast, glancing around to make sure no children were near enough to hear. “No - this is a kid’s event. We tried not to stock anything that adult today.” 

   “ when will the day come where i can walk into a coffee shop and not have coffee spilled on me? ” an aggravated sigh left her lips as she slowly shook her head in mere disappointment. “ i’m small, but I’m not invisible, you know. ” all this said while she was lightly dabbing the small stain on her sleeve.

“ it’s something that just happens when you’re short, basic physics, ” myah joked, a kind smirk on her face. “ but if you believe cheesy movies, it’s probably gonna help you meet your soulmate. did the person that spilled offer to buy you a coffee? ” she asked, grabbing another handful of napkins to hand the stranger.

“All due respect, Ms. Pierce - it works fine for me.” Paloma wasn’t about to get into an argument about coping mechanisms with her boss - not when she knew that Catherine was the pot calling the kettle black. “I think we both know coping mechanisms don’t have to be good to work.” 

“Fuck, - Shit - I mean shoot.. Sorry. I’m late, I know, but the traffic was ridiculous..” Paisley glanced at her phone. “I was supposed to bring old books from the elementary school library? I mean, I did bring them..” She held up a box.

“Oh - Paisley! Right, my bad, I didn’t recognize you,” Myah grinned and reached her hand out to shake before glancing at the box with a laugh. “Oh - here, let me help.”
