Not too long ago I was standing in the rain at The Arts University Bournemouth’s Fresher’s Fair trying to get sign ups for Life Drawing Society. I was so impressed with the level of interest, and it’s feeling exciting now that the classes have started :) So great to see people getting into it, and fab to be able to work on managing something I’ve always enjoyed.
Had a fab time helping out at the Arts University Bournemouth’s open day this weekend! We had guests write down their visions for the future, and then collect our custom drawings for them at the end of the day :)
Visiting Poole Quay last Friday really reminded me of my Foundation project. Can’t believe it was nearly 3 years ago! Definitely one of my favourite projects, really felt that I was able to immerse myself in it, and had a lot of fun using different approaches to add dimensions to the final show work.
Drawing in the Arts University Bournemouth’s new Crab studio, designed by Sir Peter Cook. Illustrator Maria Midttun led this workshop on using drawing to help you kickstart a project, getting your ideas out visually as early as possible!

“I find some image sources, such as Tumblr and Pinterest, to be the very antithesis of inspiring - I find myself conscious of the fact that I’m looking at what has already been done, rather than moving forward and creating something new” (Moross, 2014)
Some insightful words from Kate Moross about getting inspired, and the pitfalls of social media. She states that she is trying to make a “conscious decision to move away from these things - to use materials as inspiration rather than referencing existing imagery”. “Look a little closer to home. Think about what interests you”. All quotations taken from her amazing book, “Make Your Own Luck”.
A recap of projects I’ve worked on during my BA Illustration degree at the Arts University Bournemouth! Felt that some reflection was due now that my final major project is looming..! Not sure that I have necessarily developed a consistent visual style (with regard to materials), but seems that I tend to always draw ladies, and aim my work at a young adult+ audience?
Over the Easter break I tried out a selection of short animations using different materials, including ink, photographs, watercolour and pencil.
Having asked for feedback, I’ve found the watercolour to be the most popular - perhaps because of the fluidity and unpredictability of the material being retained in the animation. Perhaps this is to do with me as an individual and how I use the material - certainly when drawing with pencil I am less inclined to be expressive and more concerned about accuracy?
Testing out compositing hand drawn elements in Adobe After Effects, making each component move! Looking forward to exploring how sound can add to these animations to really bring them to life. I’m surprised how quickly we as viewers can register each scene - I initially had this animation running at half the speed it is now, but it flows much better now that it’s been sped up.
Experimenting with Adobe Animate and interactivity!
Love the idea of being able to involve the viewer, wondering how I can push these possibilities to make them my own.

Sharing moving image experimentation! Arts University Bournemouth, Level 5 Illustration.
My Youtube account where my animation and film experiments from the Convergence Divergence unit can be found!
Inspiration board for the most recent unit, with links to animations, can be found here! : https://uk.pinterest.com/cclarke1456/level-5-unit-3-convergence-divergence/
I am particularly interested in animations that retain a level of hand-drawn aesthetic; not necessarily for nostalgic reasons, but predominantly because of my fondness for mark-making and more naturally unpredictable materials.
So done with drawing side profiles, can we all just agree to not turn from now on?! #illustration #sketch #prismacolor
Trying to draw some expressions, need lots of practice!!

Life drawing 06/01/2016, first class of the year :)
Automatic drawings from live storytelling late last year by Ben Haggerty, at Cranborne's Earthouse. Inspired by folktales and mythology.
