What’s the deal with POP-UP shops?

A pop-up shop is a space that is temporary, that literally “POPS UP” in a very short amount of time. Brands that utilise pop-up shops are usually launching a product or service that can occupy a space in their local mall or other public buildings.

So what’s the craze about?

Well, using simple materials to get constructed, brands buy pop-ups to give consumers an opportunity to interact with their product or new brand launch instantly.

The area is structured to look like a brick-and-mortar store, but is held up by solid platform materials. Together with branding, the store can be very eye-catching and even interactive.

Successful pop-ups usually have interactive screens relating to the product, with testers, samples and even giveaways. Brands that use this strategy appeal to consumers on a one-to-one basis and definitely increase their market positioning. For example: Skin-care companies have an interactive “Skin-Mapping” application that helps you to find the right product for you. The experience gives the consumer a feeling of exclusivity that is unmatched. The accuracy is also on-point. The system uses profile indexes together with the photographic dimensions of your face.

What are the advantages?

Well, in terms of cost, a pop-up shop is cheaper than acquiring a space for a long period of time.

King Saud University was fortunate to have Professor Jon Elhai present a lecture on “The Problematic Use of the Smartphone and its Relation to Psychology” to an intrigued audience on Wednesday, January 30th, 2019.

Professor Elhai delved deep into dependence and addiction to the mobile phone.

The presentation had thorough and intrinsic analyses of society's reasons for mobile use. The female campus was also “plugged in” from the atrium, so it was great to have both male and female campuses benefiting from the lecture.

Interesting points included how certain individuals used their phones as a mechanism to treat their behavioral inadequacies. Not only focusing on the negative, but Dr. Elhai mentioned the benefits of using a platform such as WhatsApp, to synchronise messages to many colleagues at once.

In his research findings, he found that people with high dependence on their mobile phones were not good regulators of emotion. With the use of the iPhone application “MOMENT”, Elhai and his team of researchers measured test subjects’ time spent engaged with their phones. The audience of teachers and some students also had a chance to get their questions answered.

First things first, blogging isn’t just typing and clicking POST. It extends to videography and utilising social media to maintain your brand through-out channels. Remember you are a brand. Your individual identity is represented by the content you create and represent.

Just start- Get off the ground. Overthinking concepts and content will lead you to never start in the first place. Things will never be just right, the only way to do it, is just GO FOR IT.

2. Know that in the beginning there will be very few people reading your blog. This will help you  to edit and tailor content to the audience you are writing for.

3.Pick a platform. There are many options such as Blogger (from Google) or Wordpress (not free). There’s also Wix and Tumblr.

4. Go into it with the right intention. What do you want your end goal to be? With the right intention, you are able to ground yourself.

5. Don’t think about the perks just yet. Many people on a high level, who are celebrated bloggers get to that level after many, many years. Make sure this isn’t your only reason for blogging.

6. Enjoy and Explore- As long as you are always enjoying the process, you are already successful

7. Quality: Make sure you are always putting out good content that you are proud of. Whether it’s photography or writing, make sure you aren’t just whipping things out for the sake of content.

If it’s about photograpy, you don’t need a fancy camera, just focus on lighting. Find a light source and play around . You will learn as you go.

8. Quantity:  Once, twice or three times a week. Figure out what will work for you. If you can’t commit to a daily schedule for posting, then stick to what you can manage. Even if it’s just once a week.

9. Burn out: Don’t burn yourself out. Let people know what to expect from you. Especially with the social media component. Try to do what feels right for you. Even if it’s one tweet a day. Be honest with what you can manage so your readers know what to expect from you.

10. Keep ideas running. Look around and be inspired by everything. What are your friends talking about? What’s happening in the news? What are people talking about in general?  There are endless ideas that can come with ease once you allow yourself to be challenged and inspired.

Afterthoughts:

You might have a hard time coming up with content, and what to blog about. Try to find a niche angle, but don’t be too specific. Find your voice. Sit down and come up with 50 blog post ideas.

Not many people are aware of Google Duo. It has a clean design and is very easy to use. It allows seamless calls and messaging using voice or video. Unlike the similar Google Hangouts – it doesn’t lag or delay when on an active call.
