If only they could all see how he behaved around Benny. They wouldn’t even recognize him.

Benny came back to himself when General Mayhem set her tray down and sat across from him. “I’m honestly surprised you’re sitting here by yourself.” She told him. “Is everything okay?”

“I miss my boyfriends and everyone’s being annoying about them.” Benny huffed.

Mayhem blinked at him. “Boyfriends? As in plural? I didn’t realize your people could have more than one partner at a time.”

“Some do.” Benny said. “It’s called polyamory, and honestly it’s mostly frowned on. They’re a special case, though. Twins but in one body. Their faces switch when one or the other of them takes control.”

The General leaned forward, clearly fascinated. “I’ve never heard of anything like that in Systar.”

“It’s pretty rare here too, which means it’s very difficult for someone like them to find a partner. If a potential partner isn’t straight up freaked out by it, they usually have a preference for one over the other, and obviously that doesn’t work in the long run.” Mayhem nodded her understanding.

“But you like them both.”

Benny smiled. “Yeah. They’re both great in their own ways. I’ve had other boyfriends, but I never really felt as seen with them as I do with Liam and Garrett.”

“What drew you to them in the first place?”

The astronaut laughed. “Oh man, you won’t believe it, but they used to hunt Master Builders. I spent eight and a half years on the run from them.” Mayhem looked shocked.

“And you gave them a chance after all that?”

“And that’s why everyone else is annoying… They don’t think I should have either. But I’m glad I did. They’ve been my greatest adventure yet.” Benny perked up as his watch beeped at him. “Ooh! It’s my turn with the phone! I’ll see you later!”

@coppernauts--week is about to get a whole lot better for the day one prompt because I think I just found Benny’s helmet!!!!!! According to the National Air and Space Museum, helmets like this one-the photos below-were used from 1982-1986 for launch and re-entry.

To quote directly from the website, “From 1982 to 1986, Space Shuttle astronauts wore this type of helmet with their unpressurized blue flight suits for launch and return from space. The helmet connected to an emergency oxygen supply but did not attach to the suit.” Now, I know that’s a lot of word vomit, but just hear me out. Are we going to ignore that the flight suits they wore were SPECIFICALLY blue, or that the helmet connected to an oxygen tank?? Let me remind you of what the precious blue boy looks like:

“Charming” was never a word Benny would have used to describe Bad Cop, in the past. Tenacious, maybe. Terrifying. Bad-tempered.

Evil.

He had been the first to realize that Business’ right-hand man had helped them, in the Tower. When Business said “jump”, Bad Cop said “how high”- but he had been nowhere to be found during their raid. They knew he was there- Lucy had spoken to him over the radio when she tricked him into thinking she was Business’ secretary. Yet he hadn’t stopped them, and they had pulled off Emmet’s plan without a hitch.

When the others whisked Emmet away to train to be Vitruvius’ successor (he had, unfortunately, been the only one to be caught- by Business, no less, and subsequently beheaded), Benny had taken it upon himself to try to befriend the officer. Bad Cop seemed to have taken the unenviable task of ensuring reintegration went smoothly upon himself. At first, Benny merely observed. Bad Cop seemed to take a lot of abuse from both sides as he firmly quashed any budding disputes. So Benny decided to step in.

And found himself swept off his feet. Those traits Benny had found so frightening before became a comfort. “Tenacious” became “loyal”. “Terrifying” became “protective”. “Evil” became “misled”. And the more Benny came to know Bad and Good Cop both, the more he realized they really had been. They’d thought they were doing the right thing, protecting the citizens of the realms from the selfish and arrogant Master Builders. And Benny realized he had misjudged them as badly as Lucy had misjudged Emmet at first.

Bad Cop was sweet. Bad Cop was thoughtful. He paid attention when Benny rambled on and on about spaceships. He had a sense of humor that caught Benny by surprise. And darn if that smile didn’t make his heart flutter, when it finally made itself known.

“Charming” wasn’t a word Benny would have thought to use to describe Bad Cop in the past, but now, he thought it only fitting. Bad Cop had managed to charm his way right into Benny’s heart without even really trying.

“Are the sparklers really necessary?” Liam asked with some amusement.

“Absolutely!” Benny cheered. “You can’t tell me you didn’t celebrate the first night of summer with sparklers and catching fireflies?”

Liam chuckled. “Well, no, we can’t deny that. That’s a child’s amusement though.”

“Hey, you’re never too old for sparklers!” Benny shoved a lit one into Bad Cop’s hand. It spat out a rainbow of sparks.

“I can do you one better.” He said after a moment. “Come on.”

Benny followed curiously as Liam led him to the garage. He started laughing as the cop pulled out a pack of fireworks. “You have fireworks? Are they legal?”

“Of course they are!” Garrett laughed as he switched out. “Honestly Benny, what do you take us for? No one is above the law, and this one is in place for a very good reason. Now come on, the cul-de-sac is the perfect place to set them off!”
