TV Brain Rot

Brain: you see, in order to make Niles and Maris' separation in S3 to be an event in which Niles is fully on the right, the characterization of Maris has to go from the Bertha Mason (though rather under the form of Mrs. MacRae in Jean Webster's Dear Enemy) characterization of s1-2 towards a Rebecca-ish one, signaled by a switch from an emphasis in neurosis in the Maris anecdotae (her anxiety, both generalized and social, her eating disorder, her body dysmorphia) towards an emphasis in cruelty and callousness. Yes, Maris has always been a selfish, snobbish, self centered person, but one can argue those are traits Niles has in common with her; perhaps to a lesser degree, but he also benefits from having a voice and a face that demands our sympathy to a certain extent. A critical reclamation of Maris has to thread the line of the legitimacy of the criticism that the construction of the characters of Bertha and Rebecca has undergone -that both are characters deprived of their own voices-, while avoiding its pitfalls (the woobie-fication or girlbossification of the character).

Rewatched Total Forgiveness in Spring and oh mygosh it is a good show. I was compelled to draw some fanart. This was a bitch to figure out, a real trust the process that I was powering through, looking at my screenshot and trying to find a marker that fits, slapping on a bunch of colors on top of each other to get like something close to human skin tone (the skin was by far the hardest to color, dont look at it too hard). Ally's hair also gave me grief.

One of my favorite things in the special episode was poor Katie's visor constantly dropping over her face.
