...What Are We? part 2
Dennis Whitaker x Doctor Reader
There were only a couple more hours left on your shift so you just decided to just push through today. As well as push through the next couple days, then you would be on night shift. That would give you a small break from the day shift and all the shit that goes on.
You were going from patient to patient falling back into the grove you had before this whole thing with Whitaker happened. Once you had a minute of free time before you left for the day you went to finish up some charting so you wouldn’t be a bigger load on you later. Finding one of the computers to sit at you see someone slowly approach you and grab a chair near you scooting it closer towards you. When you look over, it’s Langdon. You and him had gotten pretty cool. He was once Robby’s prodigy son before the whole stealing benzos thing happened. You felt bad when he got back and saw that he had been replaced along with being treated differently.
“Frank, how can I help you?”, you asked with a wonky smile.
“Oh nothing too crazy, just need you to do a favor for me and get a little something for me”, he said almost in a whisper with a serious suspicious tone.
Your smile faded quickly confused on why he was asking you. He seemed to notice just as quickly.
“Relax I’m just kidding, I just wanted to come check on you.”
“Haha you’re so funny, you told that to the right person because I think anyone else would’ve ran and told Robby.”, you say with a straight face.
“I know right, I honestly have jokes for days, wanna hear them?” he asks with a shit eating grin.
“No, not really, but maybe you could go tell Robby I think he would just find them hilarious.”, you turn to give him a tight lipped smile.
“Ouch! That’s a low blow.”, he says while putting his hand on his chest. “Anyways, what's up with you today?”
“Why does everyone think something's wrong?”, you mumble while typing something up.
“Probably because you’ve been acting not like you.”, you slowly turn to side eye him.
“Thank you Frank, I can assure you nothing's wrong.”, you say as a matter of fact.
You look up from the computer you’re working on to give Langdon one of your don’t you have anything else to do looks. When you see Whitaker standing near one of his patients' rooms talking to Robby.
He seems to look over at you at the same time. Both of you made eye contact holding it for what felt like forever, but it was a few seconds. Before he looked over at Langdon and back to you. Though it was kinda far you could see him run his tongue along the inside of his cheek. Turning his attention back to Robby, you decide to do the same with Langdon.
“You’re so very welcome, but you kinda have.”
You were about to respond when you saw paramedics rush in with a patient. You and Langdon get up immediately running over to where they were. Both of you meet Robby and Whitaker there at the same time.
“32 year old Amelia Williams collapsed while at work. Coworkers said she complained of blurry vision and constant head pain. They mentioned she looked dazed and out of it as well.”
“Did they say anything else? Mention that she has anything or takes anything that could’ve caused this?”, you quickly ask while walking with everyone one toward one of the trauma rooms.
“No, that’s all the information we were able to get out of them.”, one of the paramedics says.
“Hi Amelia, are you with us? Can you wake up for us?”, you ask. You quickly look over to Robby. “No response”, you slightly raise your voice.
Whitaker seemed to move in quickly as well, almost pushing you to do his own examination; he brought out his light and started to open both of her eyes to check for dilation. “She has asymmetric dilation”
“Shit! I think we're looking at an aneurysm here.”, Langdon quickly states.
“Let's get her to CT now. Someone call Neuro and tell them we have a possible aneurysm coming up.”, Robby says.
“On it”, one of the nurses says back.
While you were working on here making sure she was set before the CT. You seemed to just zone in and stare at her. She’s so young coming in with a possible aneurysm. You were calculating the time in which she came in and how long this would take. She had a good chance at surviving, the more you stared at the more you hoped you were right. Getting lost in thought while on autopilot.
When you looked up you saw Whitaker staring at you with a concerned look. You shook your head telling him to leave it alone and focus on what’s important. He furrowed his eyebrows in response and continued with the case like you wished.
Once all cases, charting and handoffing patients were done you were finally able to leave. Wanting nothing more than to just go home and lay down. You were at your locker collecting your jacket and bag about to leave when you heard the two roommates talking while walking up to the lockers.
“Do you just want to order in tonight? We literally have like no food in the apartment.”, Santos mentions to Whitaker.
“Sure that’s fine with me, I got cash, we can split it.”, Whitaker tiredly says to his roommate.
You quickly grab your keys out of your bag and shut your locker. Throwing your bag over your shoulder. You were so tired you could run away from this place forever. Unfortunately you knew you couldn’t knowing you had to be back here tomorrow morning. When you turn to leave you face both Whitaker and Santos fishing their stuff out of their lockers.
“Hey Y/LN, heard about that aneurysm case you were on with Whitaker here, sounds intense wish I was on it with you guys.”, You and Santos didn’t speak too much. Only having occasional conversations here and there much like this one. You knew she was a good doctor, she cared for her patients deeply and was extremely determined. A part of you wondered if Whitaker had ever mentioned anything about what happened with the two of you today or just overall.
“Uh yeah it was pretty intense.”, you say while letting out a sigh. “I just really wish she made it, she was young.”, you tell her with a hint of sadness in your voice. You could tell Santos was shocked at the news, she probably hadn’t heard that part yet.
“Oh- uh yeah don’t we wish that for all our patients.”,she said back with sympathy in her voice not really knowing how else to respond back. You could feel his eyes on you, if he were to stare at you anything longer you’d think he’d burn a hole into you.
You gave her a small nod agreeing with her. Bidding her and him a goodnight before heading out to find your car.
You got into the shower letting the warm water wash your day away. Everytime you closed your eyes to let the water hit your face you could see his face. The way his face portrayed sadness, anger, disappointment and concern every time you two looked at each other. The conversation you both had in the room played in your head on repeat non stop. You couldn’t get it out of your mind, its probably for a reason though. He had a point, you were lying to yourself about how you felt.
After your shower you put on some loose sweats and a tank top that you usually sleep in. Deciding that you weren’t really hungry after the day you had. You settled for a small snack so that you would at least get a little food in your system. You sat on your couch watching some random reality show hoping it would distract you from your own reality. When you saw your phone light up on the small table in front of you. Thinking it was maybe Mel sending you something about her niche interests she likes to talk with you about.
Dennis: you home?
Your eyes go wide at the text, but more so at who sent it. Debating on responding, you give it a few minutes to see if this is something you really want to pursue at 10:30 at night.
You: yeah why?
Dennis: be there in 15.
It wasn’t even a full minute when he responded to you. The anxiety you thought you showered away earlier came back in the pit of your stomach. A million things running through your mind. Your nerves get to you knowing that he could show up any minute now, you quickly throw on a small wrap sweater on so you have something to clutch onto.
Dennis: i’m here
Followed by a small, but firm knock on your apartment door. You slowly unlock and open your door to reveal a Dennis Whitaker in a black hoodie with some baggy sweats on standing.
“Hi”, you softly say.
“Hi, can I come in?”, he asks, almost winded.
“Yeah of course…come in.”, giving a swift motion telling him to come in.
He quickly walks in awkwardly standing like he’s never been to your place. Almost like he hadn’t made himself at home many times before. Such an awkwardness surrounds him.
“So why did you come here?”, you ask, wanting to kind of get to the point.
“Uh right.”, he takes a few seconds trying to collect his thoughts. “I know when we started this…” ,he points between you and him. “We both kinda didn’t like each other, I mean you drove me up the wall with the way you always felt you had to announce your intelligence in a space no matter how big or small it was. Proving to others that you were better than them in any way that you could.”, he bluntly says. Earning him a raised eyebrow and a look questioning where this was going.
“We agreed to keep it strictly a hook up type of deal, something that we could both blow off whatever tension we were building at work. It's just the more we continued it the more I found…”, he pauses before he finishes his sentence. “That I was developing feelings for you.”, he bluntly says.
You couldn’t help, but just blink, finding it hard to make up words to say anything.
“I know you don’t want to talk about this. I mean you kind of made it obvious with the whole avoiding and distancing yourself from me thing”, he let out a small laugh, but one that screamed hurt. “I just don’t think I can hide how I feel about you anymore. Trust me I tried to bury it deep, in respect for what you wanted and what we agreed to, but I can’t do it anymore.”, he says
“I’m also sorry for how I spoke to you today…when I pulled you into that room. I was just frustrated.”, he said while looking down at his shoes.
When you don’t say anything he decides to continue on.
“I want you to be more than just a hook up, I want us to be more. I’m tired of constantly pretending that we can’t stand each other at work just to then go and hook up later on.”, he says with such desperateness.
“So please just tell me the truth, that's all I want to hear. I know today what I did and said wasn’t exactly the best way to go about things, but I’m just so sick of pretending.”, he gives you that sad kicked puppy look.
You continue to just stare in almost awe at his confession. He looked at you as if he was trying to read your mind and figure out what your thoughts were after just confessing.
“Dennis-”, you start off. “When we started this.”, you do the say pointing gesture he did earlier. “You drove me just as crazy. I mean the way you just could walk into any space and just earn admiration. The way you were so reserved yet so hands on and could pick up on anything so quick”, you bluntly say with a scoff.
You take a few seconds to process how you’re going to go about your next words.
“This was something I really wanted to stay strictly a hook up, I thought it would be easy to do that. I mean the way we are at the hospital constantly arguing about treatment plans and trying to see who lands on top. I thought there was no way that it could evolve into more…until it slowly did.”, you pause to catch your breath. You see his eyes widen at the last thing you said.
“I haven’t had the best experiences with past relationships so when things seemed to evolve and grow between us my first instinct was to back off. Especially when you started to bring it up. I was scared that it wouldn’t be any different from what I was used to…”, you let out a breath that you had seemed to be holding in. “But overtime I learned you were different.”, you let out softly.
“I think that’s what made me push you away a little more”, you softly say while messing with your fingernails.
“I know that’s not the best excuse, I mean it was never my intention to make you feel upset or hurt. I just thought it would be the best thing, but now I know that it wasn’t.”, you end with that now knowing what else to say.
You both just kind of stood and stared at each other until Dennis decided to speak up again.
“So you're fessing up that you have feelings for me?”, he asked with a grin that almost spread from ear to ear.
You let out a laugh, “Yes Dennis this is my way of fessing up that I have feelings for you.”
Dennis takes a step towards you only leaving a tiny bit of space between the both of you. “Another question, You finally gonna stop running away from me for real this time?”, he asks with the same grin on his face.
You furrow your brows a bit,”Dennis did you hear anything I just said? You seriously need to start looking for context cl-” before you’re even able to finish your sentence. You feel his lips crash into yours. He puts his hands on your hips pulling you right against him. Quickly you place your hands on the back of his neck, pulling him in closer and also steadying yourself. Your lips moving in unison and breath quickening. You both stay like that until you step back to catch your breath.
When you look up at him you give him a smile he knows all too well, “I got a question for you this time.”
His own grin returns this time, “Oh really what is it?”
“You gonna spend the night?”, your grin turns into a smile of mischief.
You actively see his grin get bigger as he quickly nods and leans back in to continue what he started.

...What Are We? part 1
Part 2
Dennis Whitaker x Doctor Reader
warning: some strong language (one word said 3 times)
You and Whitaker weren't just coworkers. I mean in the presence of other coworkers you were. You both were even seen as rivals depending on who you talked to. Constantly at each other's throats. Whitaker wasn't known for arguing or bickering with others. Until it came to you, he had a side that some didn't know he had and others wished they didn't get on. You didn't really care about getting on that side though. If anything you enjoyed getting a rise out of him because in the end you knew you got something out of it.
You woke up in a bed that wasn't unfamiliar, but it still wasn't yours. Feeling a pair of arms tighten around your waist you slowly turn to face a shirtless sleeping Dennis Whitaker. You hadn't meant to spend the night usually you're out of here before anyone can realize you're there. Although on some occasions like last night Whitaker convinced you to spend the night telling you that it was too late for you to drive. Along with a reassurance that Santos would be staying at Garcia's place that night so she wouldn't know you were there. Plus it would be easier for you to leave without fear of being found out about. You had a sneaking suspicion that Trinity knew, but she never knew enough to say anything.
You spent a little bit admiring how he slept the moon lightly lighting the room and his features. He always slept so hard, it made sense though he worked so hard he deserved a sleep that pulls him away from all the chaos you both deal with throughout the day. You also loved the way his now grown out hair was almost a perfect mess in the morning or even after you guys had a night of what you would call "blowing off steam". After a few moments you shake off the thoughts when you notice that it's about an hour and a half before his alarm goes off. Wanting to leave before he wakes and also wanting to give yourself time to go home, shower and change so you’re able to start your day fresh.
Slowly starting to slip out of the tight hold he had you in. You make sure not to wake him. Wanting to be as quiet as possible you slowly get up and off the bed. Quickly grabbing your shirt and pants off the floor you tip toe to the dark bathroom to change. You decided to leave the light off knowing that with your luck it would wake him. The last thing you wanted was to be questioned on why you're getting dressed so early in the AM. You quickly strip of the band tee he lent you to sleep in, folding it neatly and leaving it on the counter. Making a mental note to grab it and place it on his dresser before you leave. Once you're fully dressed you quietly step out the bathroom to ensure he was still sleeping, which he was. You slowly make your way over to his dresser and set the band tee on it. You bent down to pick up your shoes not wanting to put them on till you left to prevent any noise you could possibly make.
Glancing back to a sleeping Whitaker, but before you leave a part of you wishes it didn't have to be like this. There was another part that was certain it didn't have to be this way, but for now...for you it did. You exit his room and cautiously walk throughout his shared apartment making sure there isn't a Trinity Santos lurking about. You knew she was at Garcia's, but a part of you was scared she would come home from her girlfriend's place unexpectedly. When you make it out the door you let out a sigh of relief knowing that you accomplished this efficiently without waking or running into anyone in this residence.
It's about 10 mins before your start shift when you pull into a parking spot. You suddenly feel this anxiety that you hadn't felt before. You had left Whitaker's apartment before, but you hadn't left without saying something or him being awake. You tell yourself that it's really no big deal because at the end of the day you two just hook up every now and then. It has no true feelings so what does it matter? You know deep down just because you tell yourself that doesn't mean it's always true, but you decided to shake that thought off as well.
You walk into the hospital heading straight to your locker placing your bag inside along with your jacket. After you headed over to the nurses station knowing Dana would be there along with Lena, the night shift's charge nurse.
"Good Morning Beautiful", Dana said rather happily at 7:00 am.
"Morning ladies, what do we have to start off our day?", you say with a large grin and an eagerness that they were used to.
"Well, we were just talking about-", her voice starts to fade out when you see him walk into the ER. His stethoscope around his neck and those black scrubs that seemed to do it for you every time.
He makes eye contact with you, but there's something behind it that you can't quite read. Which is something you were usually rather good at doing. You can feel the anxiety you had earlier slowly creep up on you again. You're drawn back by the charge nurse with a semi strong accent's voice.
"Hey earth to Y/N you doing alright hon?", she says with a tinge of concern and a hint of curiosity.
Lena adds onto it, "You look like you seen a ghost dear.", she says with a faint laugh afterwards.
"Oh yeah all good just seemed to be distracted for a second is all. Sorry what were you saying?", you add a small laugh at the end so it masks the anxiety you just seemed to gain back.
"Well we have a few patients who need to be handed off. So find Elis and Shen they should still be here to do so.", she states.
"Perfect, I'll be on my way. Be ready Lena I'll be on your shift in a few days.", you give her the same large grin you approached them with.
She returns the same smile in a mocking way with a laugh, "Can't wait dear I'll start mentally preparing as soon as possible."
Starting to walk off from the conversation you notice Whitaker tracking you with his eyes. You had a feeling he was going to try and talk to you with the way he was looking. Also with the way he was slowly getting up from the computer he had just sat at. Starting to walk quicker you make it your mission to find the two doctors you were told to find as soon as possible to avoid whatever he wanted.
When you finally spot Dr. Elis and Dr. Shen you quickly approach them. Both turning to greet you.
"Hey you!", Elis says with a smile.
"Hey! good to see you two haven't seen you both in a minute where have yall been?", you ask with curiosity.
"Too short of a minute we were lucky to have the past two days off", Shen states before taking a sip of his usual morning coffee.
"Well actually I had the past three days off, it felt like a vacation.", Elis said with a bragging tone that earned a scoff from Shen.
"You two are lucky. It feels like I haven't had a day off since I decided my career path." you give them a tired look.
"Hey, I heard you're joining us on the night shift in a few days. Can't wait to have you on our team. We both have been waiting for you to switch to the night shift.", Shen says with a joyful tone.
"Yeah it's just for a few days to see if I actually like it, but I've been kinda in need of a change. So I thought, what's better than changing to night shift? Might as well give it a shot.", you told them.
Before they were able to answer, someone else cut into the conversation.
"Morning", taking a deep breath you knew that voice all too well.
"Morning Whitaker", both Elis and Shen say in unison.
You don't say anything, only give a simple side eye and nod to at least acknowledge his presence. He does the same before saying, "Morning Y/LN".
"Morning Whitaker", you say in a neutral tone so it doesn't give away any feeling you might be having at the moment.
"So who are our patients today?", Whitaker asks with a gentle tone and a small smile.
"Dana said I could find you guys to start handoffs and also to relieve yall.",he still held the same small smile as before.
Both Elis and Shen jump back into doctor mode to go over their patients. They turned to take us to their patients so we were able to start the hand off process. As they do so, Whitaker gives you a look. Another look you weren't able to read well. One that had too many emotions to break down. It showed unpleasantness with a look of aggravation possibly even more.
Once we got to the patients' rooms we split up. You went with Elis so you could take over her patients remaining and Whitaker did the same with Shen.
After you took over for her you gave her a simple bye and see you later so that you were able to finish up helping her patients and bid them a farewell. Robby was big on figuring out what's wrong, treating them and getting them out to help open up beds for patients who had been waiting for far too long.
You spent most of your day in a grove. Getting patients in treating them and then sending them on their way. You also spent most of your day avoiding Whitaker. Except during a few cases that needed more than just one doctor. I mean you two work together so it's pretty difficult to avoid each other entirely. When you did run into him no words were spoken unless it was to help a patient. There were also these looks shared between you that seemed to hold such intense feelings. Only you two seemed to notice it, this was a good thing you didn't want others picking up on what was going on here. You could feel the anxiety you had developed earlier now in every part of your body.
Even though you two thought no one noticed what was going on. There were some that started to notice something was off when both of you hadn't been at each other's throats all day. Which was a rare occurrence that many hadn't witnessed before. Robby seemed to notice more than others.
"What's up with you today?", he questioned you as you were charting something for your patient.
"Uh nothing? Why?", you said in an unconcerned way to hopefully get him off your back quickly.
"Are you sure? because you lost your attitude in full and aren't starting arguments with me, Whitaker, Garcia and a few others?", hearing his name made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
"Yeah I'm pretty sure. Would you prefer me to give you an attitude in full and start arguments with you, Whitaker, Garcia and a few others?", you ask back with an irritated tone to let him know you're not in the mood for whatever this was.
"Uh no, but I am just staying that you seem a little off today. Is there anything you want to talk about? Anything that could be I don't know-"
Before he could finish what he was saying you cut him off, "Do I seem to not be doing my job to my full potential today?, you ask rather straightforwardly, but still with a politeness behind it not wanting to be rude. You knew that Robby was coming from a place of concern, but right now you didn’t want to talk about any of this.
He takes a second to process what you just asked, "No not at all I'm just saying you know you seem quiet. It's not just like you. Usually you and Whitaker are going at it trying to see who can land on top. There seems to be none of it today, I mean I'm not complaining but...", he gives a simple shoulder shrug that seems to irritate you a little more than before.
"Oh okay well with all do respect if I'm not off my game in any way and still giving my all in helping my patients. I don't really see why you're asking me these unnecessary questions and stating irrelevant things that have nothing to do with our patients.", you say as your eyes leave the computer you're typing on to give him a blank stare.
He lifts his eyebrows and scoffs, "Point taken holler if you need anything.", is the last thing he says before he walks off to most likely go check in with other doctors and his patients.
You finish typing up whatever you need to add to your patient's chart. Now on your way to go check up on your other patient. When you feel someone firmly grab your arm and pull you into a room. You turn to see who just grabbed you in such a way and see Dennis Whitaker standing there staring at you while still having a grip on your arm. Quickly you pull your arm out of his grip to shut and lock the door to ensure privacy was had in this already sacculated room that was shut off from the rest of the department.
When you turn back to him he gives you this look of disbelief. A look you were confused about.
"You've been avoiding me. Why?", he stated and asked with a stern look.
"Is this really why you pulled me into this room? So you could get an explanation out of me. I'm sorry, but this can be talked about at a later time like possibly when we’re I don't know at work. I have a patient I have to check up on.", you go to turn away and to unlock the door when you feel the same hand grab your arm again this time with a lighter grip to turn you back facing him.
"No, we're gonna talk about this now, this whole thing seems to be distracting from how we are assessing cases. Don't worry about your patient. I asked Dana to check up on them because you are currently busy with something.", he gives you the same stern look.
"Distracting from how we assess cases? Maybe for you, but I am still on my game so I think that's something you gotta work out with yourself. Plus we haven't even really worked together on many cases today so I'm confused.", you scoff.
"So you agree that you've been avoiding me?", he asks with a blank stare crossing his arms.
"No I don't agree because I'm not avoiding you." you lie giving him the same blank stare that you know he could see right through.
He lets out a laugh, one that's laced with disbelief again, "Right, When did you leave my place this morning?"
"A little bit after three", you say softly, kind of giving in.
"Why'd you leave without saying anything?"
You take a moment to answer, but truly you didn't know what you wanted to say.
"I didn't want to wake you", you state.
"Bullshit"
You were taken back by his response, "Bullshit?"
"Yeah bullshit you've stayed the night at my place before and you never left without letting me know you were leaving.", he states with such seriousness behind it.
"I didn't think it was gonna be this big of a deal. I left without saying anything one time it's not-", you weren't even close to finishing what you had to say before you were cut off.
"Well it is a big deal to me because you’ve been pulling away and have been acting distant. Then I hear you’re thinking of fully switching to night shift and today for almost a full shift have avoided me and treated me-", you decided it was your turn to now cut him off.
"Like a coworker. I treated you like a coworker because that's what we are", now you knew you were wrong for that, but it came out so suddenly.
"Like a coworker? You think that's just what we are? Coworkers really?", he furrows his eyebrows leaning in a bit more than he did before.
"Yes. That's exactly what I know we are", you state with such firm belief.
He looked almost taken aback. His mouth slightly parted like he wanted to say something, but was trying to search for the right words.
“That you know we are?”, he repeats with almost sadness and a hint of anger.
There’s a few minutes of silence before you decide to break it.
“Dennis”, is all you could get out and say.
“It’s actually Whitaker since we’re just coworkers. When you’re ready to talk about what’s actually going on here instead of lying to yourself and me, come find me. Other than that I think we should head out there since we have patients”, he said while leaving you in the room all by yourself.
You stood there processing what the hell just happened, but you knew deep you were in the wrong. Dennis had tried to bring this topic up before. The topic of what you guys really were. You always blew it off not wanting to confront whatever you were feeling deep down. This was all just supposed to be a hook up fling type of situation; it was never meant to be more. Well, that’s what you wished for anyway. So, the moment Dennis brought it up the more you pulled away. Not having the best past with relationships and the people you had dated or been with prior. You just wanted to have something lowkey with someone, you never meant for it to be someone you work with. You also didn’t mean for you to fall for the person you were in this situation with either.
---------------------------------------------------------------
hey!! cooked up another little story! there will be a part 2 hopefully coming out shortly. i decided to spilt the story in half because its lowkey kinda long for just one post.
let me know how we feel about this. idk what theme im going for here like it kinda feels angsty, but like idk.
also!! sorry for not really adding too much of the rival dialogue in here i'm looking to add it probably? maybe? possibly? in the part 2. i'm tryna cook up trust. i want their rivalry parts to be shown on cases that they are both working on so i'll try to enter a flow state and like come up with a scene or two.
Shift Change
Dennis Whitaker x Rad Tech Reader
The ER was booming at the end up your shift. You had heard it was a multi-vehicle car accident from some of the doctors running around. Meaning many scans needed to be done and many doctors calling for you. The last few hours you had left were about to go quick which gave you some relief, but didn't give you much.
Before you knew it was close to 7 am meaning morning shift would come in and relieve you to go home, shower, eat and pass out on your bed that you haven't seen in you don't remember how long. It also meant that you would see Dr. Whitaker. Someone you had exchanged quite a few words with almost every time you two crossed paths. You mainly worked nights, but there were also a handful of times you worked day shift. He was one of the few doctors that wasn't a complete asshole to you. He was kind and genuine and his smile was so-
Your thoughts were disrupted when you hear one of the doctors start talking to you.
You looked over to Dr. Elis saying something that you didn't quite catch. Offering her a simple "hmm" with eyebrows raised to tell her that you didn't quite register what she said.
"I said are you ready to go home? or are you ready to see a certain doctor you always seem to be chatting it up with?" Elis gives you a teasing look.
Her and Dr. Shen caught on quick to whatever was going on. You hadn't really understood what they meant. You usually would blow it off with a simple laugh and a "Its not even like that, its just two coworkers having a conversation" which both of them would turn to share a look and give a simple "Sure whatever you want to believe."
You let out a small laugh "I am ready to eat an actual meal and lay on a mattress that has memory foam that makes you feel like you're laying in a cloud."
Dr. Elis shook her head offering a small laugh as well "If that isn't the truth, when's the last time you actually went home? I've heard you've been working shifts back to back."
"Yeah I been working both the day and night with a few hours in between. Been just going home to shower, change and do all the other important things except sleep and eat a meal that's good, but I don't count those as really going home its more like a visit. Thankfully I get the next three days off" you said while leaning your cheek into your palm.
"I honestly think this is my first time sitting like ever" you shared out loud to her.
"Looks like you need those few days off, but one thing what are you gonna do without your little chats with our new Doctor Whitaker?" A grin spreads across her face.
Letting out a groan that you seemed to be holding in for too long. "What's with you and Shen and this topic of Whitaker?"
"You seriously saying you don't see it?", she gave you a look of disbelief mixed with curiosity.
"Yes, that's what I'm one hundred percent saying. Were just two coworkers who happen to share a conversation every time we see each other nothing less and nothing more. We always have conversations with each other. Why is him and I any different then other coworkers having convos?", you try to hold up a poker face that she won't see through, but the truth is you knew that there was something maybe more on your side than his. You just always tried to play it off because the rumors that spread around here are quick and last longer then need be.
"If it was just two coworkers talking you wouldn't be so defensive about it.", Dr. Shen says as he randomly pops out of no where drinking his usually coffee.
Dr. Elis gives him a look of agreement. She starts to speak lowly so others don't hear, "Maybe you should like you know ask him out break a few HR rules and regulations. Go get a coffee talk about stuff outside of work. You two seem to already do that here so what's the difference. Well there is a difference, but you know what I mean."
You look over at the time seeing there was only a few minutes left for your shift, "You guys are crazy, don't go spreading these ideas alright I will see you guys in a few days.", you say whisper lowly so others wouldn't hear.
As your walking away you hear her yell, "Thanks for your work today you're the best! Enjoy your mini vacation!", Her and Shen start to laugh like their childish teenagers.
You turned back to look at them and give a weird smile. When you turn back around you walked right into someone's chest. Seeing a stethoscope fall. Both you and the other person go to reach for the fallen object at the same time, but you seem to beat them to it. When you fully stand up along with the other person ready to hand it over and apologize. You realize you walked right into Dennis Whitaker the one person you actually wanted to avoid today due to the teasing that you acquired a few minutes prior.
"Hi! sorry I wasn't paying attention to where I was going. Here." you awkwardly let out with a smile while quickly handing over his stethoscope. Both your hands slightly touch. You start to feel the tips of your ears heat up due to this whole interaction.
"Hi?", he questions says back.
Whitaker then lets out a small laugh adding a sly smile, "No worries, but what did I hear about vacation? You taking some time off?" he asked crossing his arms after putting the stethoscope around neck.
"Oh yeah I have the next few days off thankfully. I'm starting to feel like I live here.", you say with a relief knowing that you're finally done with this shift.
You see his eyes kind of go wide, but he seems to shakes off whatever it was.
"Nice I wish I could get a few days off, but at least I'm getting paid now so I'll take it." he says with a smile, one that seems to draw you in more.
You just seem to kind of stare at him, not knowing what to say next. Usually you have something quick to comeback with, but right now all you can do is just stare. You start to think that it's all those sleepless days and nights starting to catch up with you.
"You feeling alright?" he says his smile starting to fade into concern.
His voice breaking you out of whatever trance you were in, "Uh yeah sorry I think the sleep deprivation is starting to catch up to me. I haven't known what sleep is for the past week.", you say with an awkward laugh.
He seems to sense the awkwardness as well, "Right...heard last night was chaotic were you all good here?" he says trying to break whatever was happening here.
"All was good, radiology down here was a short staffed as per usual. It was almost quiet till about 3 that's when the patients who were in the car accidents came in." you let out a sigh while looking over to the patients you scanned a few hours prior.
"But you know us rad techs we know how to work around that", you then give another smile, but this one showed your exhaustion.
"Yeah you guys are pretty badass, you don't really get the credit you deserve you know", he says looking you straight in the eyes. It almost felt like there was something more behind that look.
You let out a laugh, "You tryna sweet talk me so I stay for the day shift because I have never heard a doctor utter anything remotely close to that."
"No! No I swear I'm not- I'm being genuine, but it would be nice to have you on the day shift today." he gives you almost a shy smile one that you often seen when you first met him many months ago. Oh has he changed so much since then.
"You just want me to work the day shift so you can send me your patients that you ordered too many scans for. By the way they usually don't need to have that many done I'm getting concerned about radiation exposure."
"I do not do that. I order the necessary scans for them."
"Right? I'm starting to feel like you enjoy doing that so you can call me and bug me about when you're gonna get your scans. Y/N when are they gonna be ready? Y/N can't you bump them up?", you slightly mock him with a playful look.
"And what if I do?", he says almost in a serious tone.
You blink a couple times to help process what he just asked.
"So, you like ordering too many scans for a patient so they have to wait longer and get charged for all the extra scans that aren't necessary? Oh and don't forget the exposure to radiation", you were mainly teasing him, but were also questioning why he does that so much?
"Oh no! God no, I don't- I didn't mean I enjoy patients getting charged for extra scans and waiting longer. I do that to be safe and ensure them, but I meant maybe I do enjoy calling you and bugging you."
You again just blink processing what he just said.
Something seems to take over you. Mainly blaming it on the lack of sleep you've received in the past week. Although his sudden confidence has kind of rubbed off onto you in this moment.
"Right? Well maybe you can bug me with a call outside of work?" you cringe at the fact that you just said that. Knowing that it doesn't even fully make since, but go big or go home right? Well actually you're starting to be more fond of the go home option more and more as this interaction goes on.
It was now Whitaker's turn to blink and process what you just said to him.
"What? What are you saying?" he asks while crossing his arms in front of him again while adjusting his stance. Something he had a habit of doing and something you didn't dare complain about because just that action itself had you. Two words...his forearms.
"I'm saying maybe we should exchange numbers and you can possibly bother me with a question about going to get coffee if you would be down for that type of thing?", you start to ramble off in the end knowing what you said actually doesn't make much sense.
What the hell were you even saying at this point? You knew Elis and Shen were gonna grill you about this in three days when you come back.
"I would actually like that yeah" he says with a small smile and the same stance as before.
As you both stand there you had noticed two people walk in over Whitaker's shoulder. Your eyes go wide and your fight or flight starts to kick in instantly.
"Cool do you think I could give you that number in about 3 days?", you say almost too quickly.
"Yeah? that's fine, but why wait we're here right now?", he asks almost suspiciously. His eyebrows furrowing together trying to make sense of the question you just asked.
"Well Princess and Perla just arrived to the scene and the last thing I really want is for them to spread something that I'd like to keep more on the private side.", you say quickly and rather straightforward. So, that this can end before they see this interaction and start coming up with their own theories that tend to spread throughout the pitt.
"Got it! Enjoy your vacation!", he says with much understanding. The last thing anyone would want is a rumor being tossed around the department.
Whitaker starts to walk off from where you both were standing. When he goes to walk pass by you he lowly whispers a "See you in three days I'll be waiting for that number."
