 Appropriation has slowly become a commonplace strategy for art making. It certainly works quite well with a visual language and is a tried and true way to collect a stash of appealing images. From the dadaists to found object artists to contemporary use of collage; these formants have integrated into our society. The Mash-up DJ or the rock musician who samples is a common occurring character. We see this procedure of using parts of things to create a new thing and quickly accept it - yet a book appears as an anomaly. Re contextualizing a sentence? It is hard for me to wrap my head around and I am not sure if it is because I am not used to it or it I do not like it. I found it enjoyable and humorous to read yet I was conceptually stumped. We speak many languages, such as drawing pictures, and making music and then there is real language. The act of speaking words appears to be a very concrete, so when we are presented with them rearranged and and mismatched it is confusing. Images are constantly rearranged so we are very used to seeing that. Thinking deeper into the concept of night moves I start thinking about the idea of the connotation. Every word has it's specific definition but then there also is an aura around it of everything that is associated with the word. I often think that when I say a sentence people can never actually know what I mean. They can know the definition of each word in my sentence, but I have certain explanations for each word that is beyond other words. We think in complex ways and certain thoughts can never be articulated. Language has serious limits and to play with words as one plays with images is a way to expand those limits. This is one thing that I feel Stephanie Barber is doing with “Night Moves.”
